Nice, Lunk. Every player needs at least one advocate! Or else the conversation gets dull. :-)

Next year’s class isn’t that great outside of the pitchers anyway. That’s one reason Bay made more sense now than Lackey.

the mets will NOT be big players in next years crazy FA class

Big players? Probably not. But could they sign one big FA pitcher? I think its possible. Kind of depends on Beltran. If they are going to let him walk after 2011, they could start spending that money early – either by back-loading or just by taking a salary hit for one year.

Not that I agree with them, but they are now (more accurately) calling it “climate change”.

    Here’s how it goes:
    (1) Too much CO2 in atmosphere (too many rotten humans).
    (2) Ozone layer of atmosphere deteriorates.
    (3) “Greenhouse effect”.
    (4) Polar ice caps, glaciers & icebergs melt, releasing cold water into oceans.
    (5) Extra cold water in oceans alters the “conveyor belt” of ocean currents that acts as the planet’s “thermostat”.
    (6) “Catastrophic climate change”.

Well, if Ollie has a decent (not great season) this year, he only has one other year on his contract. That makes him a bit more tradeable if the need arises next offseason. Castillo also will only have one year left on his contract and a one year $6 million deal might not look so bad.

Climate change is the more accurate term. Global warming was just a more useful term when, you know, everything was hot and California was constantly on fire.

Actually, by the way, just as a note: ozone depletion and greenhouse effect are actually two contradictory things.

You want a stable amount of ozone in the atmosphere as it blocks harmful radiation from the sun. Too little ozone, the radiation gets through warming the planet (this is what CFC’s did). That’s ozone depletion. In this case, we’re upsetting the balance in the opposite way (in ozone and in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere). Too much of both, the suns heat gets it, bounces off the earth, and then can’t get out again (see also: Venus).

Basically, science lesson for today: ozone depletion is not the same as global climate change. We actually did very well combating ozone depletion in the late 80’s.

If we were to get Garland & Sheets, what would we do with the extra starter? A month ago, you could have talked about moving one of Maine/Ollie/Pelfey into the bullpen, but with the Igarashi & Escobar signings, there’s not really any room for them.

I dont think Sheets is necessarily going to be ready by Opening Day 2010…I’ve heard May from some reports.

soooo we can worry about that later to some degree…i mean there’s no guarantee we dont need another starter by then.

also, i think there could be a bullpen spot if we had to have one.

Pelfrey is not leaving the rotation and Ollie would be horrid out of the pen. Obviously, Maine would go down. With Escobar and Igarashi, I think Maine would slot in as a long reliever. Basically, it would kill Figgy’s opportunity to stick with the team.

I hate to say it, but I´d rather have Garland than Pineiro at this point. Garland has been consistent–not great, but consistent and durable. Pineiro hasn´t–he had a great 2009, but what is he going to be in 2010?. The Mets rotation has too many question marks already to add another one.
I´d rather have Arroyo than either of them.

Irigashi is such an X factor I don’t believe he will be reliable with his history of control issues in a league with a larger strikezone. Maine could be valuable for this reason.

    Interesting from Metsglob-

Last season, Castillo hit .211 with eight sacrifices and a .356 OBP in 95 plate appearances with a runner on first base; but he hit .316 with a .391 OBP in 338 chances with nobody on base.
In 2008, during one of the worst years of his career, and with Reyes in the lineup on a regular basis, Castillo hit .238 with five sacrifices and a .333 OBP in 53 plate appearances with a runner on first base, while grounding out in to eight double plays.

I´d also venture to guess that Castillo´s high OBP has less value than the same OBP in a different player, due to his overwhelming proportion of singles (very low SLG).

We dont need one ROOGY in the pen. If you have a righthander in the pen, he should be able to get a righty hitter out. Therefore we have 7 ROOGYs in the pen.

Those 5, plus a second lefty and a long reliever/emergency starter.

That leaves Stokes and Green out, with Figgy, Nieve and whoever else they bring in (Dickey?) competing for the last spot. If you sign 2 pitchers, maybe Maine goes to the pen with Nieve, Figgy, Niese all going to AAA.

Interesting article from Toby Hyde for the statGeeks out there…

Over at Amazin’ Avenue, Mark Himmelstein writes perhaps the best piece of analysis about a Mets prospect this off-season, tackling the subject of Kurt Nieuwenhuis’s defensive abilities. Himmelstein tries to mediate between the fact that BA called Nieuwenhuis the Mets best defensive outfielder in the minors, with the fact that Sean Smith’s Total Zone had him as a below average centerfielder in the Florida State League in 2009.

Total Zone relies on classifying batted balls into ground balls, line drives, or flyballs. Outfielders are expected to catch flyballs at a much higher rate than line drives. However, Mark observes a major discrepancy in the percentage of of batted balls that were designated line drives for games played in St. Lucie Versus the rest of the league. A ball hit in the air in St. Lucie was much more likely to be called a fly ball than a line drive.

As Mark explains, this is doubly damning for Nieuwenhius’s zone rating because this consistent misclassification will hurt both his fielding rate for line drives and for fly balls:…(more)

In short, the standard caveat lector for stats: Garbage in, garbage out.

I think there is more to it than just a difference of terminology when I look at how the Mets approach the issue. It seems like stupid compartimentalized thinking to me now unless you have a dude like Bradford circa 2006 who was death to righties in all situations.

Its the kind of thinking that keeps a Sean Green in the pen because he has been designated a “ROOGY”, but Nelson Figueroa stays in AAAA because he is a “starter” even though he has been proven effective against all types of hitters the first time in the order.

Fuck it. A pen with Nieve and Figueroa (two longmen or whatever you want to call them) is better than an overspecialized pen with a “ROOGY” in it.

I agree with that too. There are lefties out there who just can’t hit lefties – so there is real value in being able to bring in a lefty to face them in a critical situation. You can’t say the same about righties. A righty who can’t hit righties doesn’t last very long.

    HAHA!

“We all talk to him,” Ellis said, smiling. “We give him hell all throughout the week. We feel like, if he can take it from us, he can take it from anybody.”

Ellis said Jets veterans have driven home the point, with biting locker-room humor, that Sanchez does not have to be the Franchise, just a good driver. Drive the bus, steer the bus, navigate a couple of tricky turns here and there, but just manage the game. Don’t try to be the hero.

Ellis compared Sanchez’s situation to that of the Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger when he entered the league with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004. He was raw but full of spit and vinegar.

“They had a huge running game, great defense – he just managed the game,” Ellis said. “Then all of a sudden he evolved into the player he is today. I see the same similarities here with Sanchez.”

Yeah, its super-retarded and my own cynical take on it is that alot of the time specialization is a result of a manager’s lack of imagination. Managers like Willie and Jerry love to have this type of compartimentalization because it makes managing easy for them. They can predictably make bullpen moves according to the narrow niche they have carved for every individual reliever.
