Was there to witness a very convincing win for the Rangers last night. Avery set up the goal of the night with a spin-o-rama then a dish to Captain America for a tap in redirection. They even gave Callahan an empty net to shoot just for making the Olympic team.

Yeah, it was as good as a Rangers game gets. It’s funny though how much shit Avery gets and Ott does the same thing but never gets flack for it.

Best moment early on in the game was where Robidas and his peewee level face cage tried starting shit with Gaborik who then gave him a short cross-check and put his ass down.

Also Gaborik’s goal was another one you just don’t see average players make, bobbled the puck at his feet a bit and then gave it a quick whack and it goes in.

Avery: “being paid by both teams”

    Best line ever.

Yeah, that’s one of Gaborik’s gifts. Taking a flubbed opportunity and somehow still getting a good scoring chance off of it. I think Turco was just surprised he got such a strong backhander off.

    hey lunk,

saw your post on new year’s day, but was too late to respond. we are settled in here now. it is colder than expected, but this is an apparently unusually cold winter. i noticed the local sporting goods store doesn’t carry hockey skates so in the unlikely event that the creek freezes i won’t be able to get a pickup game started.

That’s another thing. Gabs was getting hit away from the puck and interfered with all game and the refs didn’t feel like calling anything. You can tell the zebras were playing a tit for tat game. They’d only call egregious penalties but, once they did, you knew they’d find a way to call a penalty the other way within minutes. They even managed to balance out the two man advantage with the four minute PP. It’s just annoying.

He needs to have a history with the team they’re playing against. Dallas really lost their focus on the game itself.

And Turco talking shit during the post-game interviews. The guy let in some bad goals, Avery’s goal wasn’t anything more than a straight up shot and although Kotalik fired an absolute laser it was from pretty far out.

However, I have yet to hear any one from the team talk about Molina’s bat. Instead, they repeatedly talk up how well he works with both the starting rotation and the bullpen, how successful he has been at preparing a pitcher with the coaching staff for each night’s game, and I hear about how well he knows the hitters in the National League… and so, it seems like the Mets value these behind-the-scenes qualities as much as – if not more than – his potential to hit 15 to 20 home runs from behind the plate

So finally I understand, the reason we are going to overpay this lard-ass is because our scouting department and pitching coach need help from a catcher who has spent the bulk of his career in the AL…

    More info on Artie

NEW YORK, Jan. 7 (UPI) — U.S. comedian and radio personality Artie Lange stabbed himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, a law enforcement source told the New York Post.

Lange, who has battled weight issues and an addiction to drugs for years, was hospitalized during the weekend for undisclosed reasons.

The Post said his mother stopped by his New Jersey apartment last Saturday to bring him food and found him bleeding heavily from self-inflicted wounds.

She called 911 and Lange was transported to a hospital where he was treated for six “hesitation wounds” and three deep incisions, the source said.

The Post did not say what his current condition is.

“We all have our demons,” Howard Stern said about his frequent radio-show sidekick this week. “Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He’s a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don’t forget how great he is.”

Wow. Where has Avery been with that kind of performance this season? Without a doubt his best game since returning from the Stars. Took it a little too far at one point and got booted for 10 minutes, but the damage was already done. Perhaps it was a confidence issue. Perhaps he needed to face the Stars again in order to recharge his battery. Bottom line is that it’s been a long time since I’ve seen him be the Sean Avery from two seasons ago. Hopefully this guy sticks around for the remainder of the season. Because this team needs to feed off of the energy that he is capable of providing.

Slow start in the first, but really picked it up half way through and kept it going for the remainder of the game. Stayed close for a while at 3-2, but this was one where I was confident that they would hold on for the victory. Incredibly entertaining game to watch as well. Avery’s shot from the top of the circle for a goal is something we really don’t get to see too often from him. And some of those passes last night were beautiful. Gaby got a little lucky having the puck sneak through, but he doesn’t even get that opportunity without a perfect pass from Avery.

That’s really the most frustrating thing for me when I watch Avery play. He has the ability to be a tremendous play maker as well as a more efficient goal scorer. He’s got a strong, quick release and he loves to get down and dirty in front of the net. Yet he’s never even had 40 points in a season. I certainly don’t expect him to rack up 3 points a game, but he has the ability to be much more productive. I just hope last night’s game pushes him to be the same confident, cocky and energetic player that meant so much for this team a couple of seasons ago.

I think Avery is just REALLY having difficulty finding that middle ground between crazy Avery who is effective and calm Avery that can’t do shit. Even last night, in a career night, he couldn’t quite keep himself at the middle ground all game.

How many people in the last ten years, do you think, have had 4 point, 12 penalty minute games?

He felt like Superman last night. Let’s face it, the dude was getting away with shit that he hasn’t gotten away with in, well, forever. Avery obviously got carried away with himself, which is his problem. He’ll be incredibly effective and then go nuts and take a stupid penalty. Fortunately for him and his team, he kept himself together long enough to make a huge difference.

I honestly think the idea is to increase interest in the US, they had an outdoor game a few years back called the Heritage Classic. Although I think if Dallas gets the game, which Jerry Jones is lobbying for, I might have to kill Bettman myself.

Winter Classic should be held at a neutral site if in NY. Wollman Rink would be awesome. the problem would be choosing a local team to represent NY. You have two NY teams (not including the Devils of course). And even though the Devils and their fans don’t like being tossed into the NY mix because they want to be known as NEW JERSEY, they would bitch and moan till the cows come home if they were left off of this thing. I think it should be a double header. Home and home if you will. One game Rangers/Isles, next game Rangers/Devils. Two fierce rivalries in two days. Though I don’t think NBC would be all that thrilled about having their big outdoor game be two teams from the same area.

I’ve advocated having the game in Central Park. Wollman is a no go because it’s not an oval shape, it’s more of a triangle. Hold it in one of the large open fields, build lots of low level bleachers and having standing room only sections. You can fit 100K people for a Simon and Garfunkel or Dave Matthews show, you can easily fit 50K for a hockey game.

Baseball stadiums look cool but the sightlines are not suitable for hockey. Placing the rink in smack dab middle of a baseball diamond means even the best seats are still really far away from ice.

Somehow that move will work out and Peters will score a back breaking goal against the Rangers in a few days.

I think he’ll be a 4th line guy. He really is one of the best PK forwards in the league. I’ve skimmed a number of blogs of opposing teams the Rangers have played against and besides Gaborik/Lundqvist/Avery, Cally usually gets a lot of praise for his hustle.

I agree with the analysis of Cally but for some reason I just think he’s going to be the first healthy scratch. Dunno why.

Are we going to have to do NHL10 in real life?

    Olney:

Mets, No. 2 starter. They could be in a commanding position in the market for free agent starters, because they appear to have the most money to spend, and by the end of the bidding, they figure to land either Joel Pineiro — the best of the available starters — or Jon Garland.

Funny how one big signing changes perception. The MSM narrative early on is that the Wilpons were pinching pennies til they squeak, and that no one wants their money anyway. Now they have the most money and everyone is begging for crumbs off their table. Have the Mets actually done something right?

    15. Notre Dame Stadium (South Bend, IN)

Talk about your iconic venues: The NHL could sell shamrock-based Winter Classic gear and then sell it again on March 17. Capacity is 80,795; no idea which teams would work in what would be a neutral site, but a commercial with the Notre Dame Fight Song is already playing in our heads.

i absolutely love this idea. play a college/pro doubleheader.

    according to espn:
larussa says hell put big mac on the roster by aug 31..so hes eligible for post season….if they make it in

If you believe that Piniero/Wolf/Marquis/Garland are pretty much interchangeable, then it does look like the Mets have played this market pretty well.

Obviously Lackey would have been nice, but there were only 3 premium FAs this year and we signed one of them. Hoping for 2 is probably unrealistic.

of course if going for the cheaper of the two means sheets/bedard is more in play, that changes everything too

Yeah, I’d go Piniero over Garland. If Piniero’s transformation is as advertised, he’s much better the Garland.

Years matter too. With the upcoming FA class of pitchers, it would be a shame to get locked into a long term deal with one of these guys.

we can’t afford anything in next year’s FA class.

we already have $110M committed to 8 players for 2011

    oops

I’d rather just go Piniero than both Garland and Sheets. Partly because I have a soft spot for Maine in the 5th spot. :)
