So basically he’s being paid half a million more per and three more years to his deal (likely two.)

    Epic FO Fail.

I completely disagree. $54 million more guaranteed is a HUGE difference.

We’re giving Bay five years barring an epic disaster, not four.

And I think I’d have been more comfortable giving Holliday what he wanted rather than the deal we gave Bay.

Like I said above, you can’t assume the Mets would have gotten Holliday at the same price the Cards did. More bidders = more bargaining power for Holliday.

Not true. Any moderately significant injury in year 3 or 4 and he likely walks. He gets 5 years if he’s healthy. That’s fine with me.

And we’ll have to see the details of the Holliday deal. There may also be an option there, or some kind of out clause before the 7th year. But based on what we know so far, I’m still happy with Bay’s deal.

I’m not sure anybody feels that strongly about either of their D. Some of the Defensive metrics suggest a huge gap between the two, but I have yet to hear any scout agree with that.

Holliday probably has better range, but I don’t think there is enough diffence between their D to be a significant factor.

    by JOEL SHERMAN, NY Post

When the offseason began, the Mets’ mindset was to move on from Carlos Delgado. And it was not just about how his not-very-athletic 37-year-old body would recover from hip surgery. They also wanted to change the tenor of the clubhouse, where Delgado’s personality could be, at times, dominant.

But now that Delgado is playing again in Winter Ball, Mets officials are suddenly sounding very much like an organization that wants him back under a few conditions:

    1) He shows he can play multiple days in a row at first base and can move in the field and on the bases without a noticeable limp or impairment.
    2) That he is willing to take a contract similar to what Atlanta gave Troy Glaus; about a $2 million base with a chance to make say $8 million or more based on games played.

The Mets are worried about the lack of lefty power in their current lineup. And if Delgado is willing to make himself a low financial risk then they would see that a gamble worth taking. Minaya, in particular, remains enamored with Delgado and the rest of the organization is suddenly open-minded to having Delgado return.

After an afternoon of negotiations produced an agreement, Mike Shanahan signed a five-year contract to become head coach and executive vice president of football operations for the Washington Redskins.

Under the terms of the new deal, Shanahan will team with Redskins executive vice president and general manager Bruce Allen, but Shanahan will have the ultimate authority on football decisions. Shanahan will be introduced as the Redskins head coach at a 2 p.m. ET news conference Wednesday.

As the contract was being signed at the Redskins’ training complex, Shanahan and owner Dan Snyder posed together for a picture. Then, with the deal signed, Shanahan, his agent Sandy Montag, Allen and Snyder headed out for a celebration dinner in Washington, D.C.

The contract is worth approximately $7 million a year, the Denver Post reported on its Web site. Now that Shanahan has been hired elsewhere, the Denver Broncos, who fired Shanahan one year ago, will recoup $7 million in offset money over the next two seasons under the terms of the agreement they had with the coach.

Bengie Molina – Mets Offer 1 Yr, 6 Mil, Vested Opt for 2nd Yr
    Quote:
    by JOEL SHERMAN, NY Post

One Mets official flatly said the organization will not budge from its offer to Bengie Molina of one year with an option. The Mets cannot see another team that needs a catcher that is willing to go to two years and — even if there is — the Mets are leery of giving the bulky, 35-year-old Molina more than one guaranteed year.
