(Rival GMs say the Giants and Mets are the two slowest adapters.)

Rival GM’s would be wrong. Ben Baumer was employed by the Mets in 2004. Now, whether they use the info he cranks out is another matter.

That was my opinion too VMF. But a bunch of different sources over the last couple of days have been saying Omar wants him back.

I just saw the pic of Bay in his Mets uni. He just isn’t cute. It’s going to take a lot of hitting to make him cute. damn it!

Why would they bring anything like science or logic in to cloud the gut check decision making process? That would just be silly.

It would be nice when the Mets do go against the stats they have some sort of logic-based explanation why they did.

  14. Comment posted by VMF Misses Omar Cam on January 5, 2010 at 4:33 pm (#1130661)

    logic-based

You want logic rational thinking ………… that’s a lot to ask for from any sports organization.

  15. Comment posted by Rave on January 5, 2010 at 4:34 pm (#1130662)

The Mets treat their statistical staff like their medical staff: selectively. Look at the Bay hit charts they are propagating — it fits their narrative, so they’re going with it.

There is some sentiment in the organization to go for a more talented reclamation project such as Ben Sheets or Erik Bedard. But the prevailing group now believes that sure innings is the most needed commodity because of the already fragile condition of Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine and Oliver Perez.

It’s a defensible argument. I think the concept of “sure innings” is overrated if the innings you’re getting aren’t that great. I’d rather get 150 innings of Sheets + 50 innings of Figueroa/Niese/Nieve than 200 innings of Garland. On the other hand, there’s no question that Sheets is a major injury risk. I’d be more comfortable with him if we didn’t have so many other question marks in the rotation.

I think the fear is that you get 20 innings of Sheets and 180 innings of crap because the most effective of Figgy/Neise/Nieve will already be filling for Santana, Maine or Perez.

Tonight is the one game I can’t decide on.

Need help. GA Tech or Iowa?

A creative and speedy triple offense with not much of a passing game v a solid and stingy BIG 10 D.

If Iowa can contain the triple option I like Iowa. But that speed…..I usually never go against college speed.

I agree with you, but it looks like we’re only signing 1 more starter. So I guess the question is, do you go with a high-risk/high-reward FA like Sheets, or do you go with a known consistent-but-mediocre FA like Garland?

The Seattle Mariners are expected to acquire first baseman Casey Kotchman from the Boston Red Sox in return for at least one minor leaguer, sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.

If the trade is completed as planned, Kotchman would be penciled in as the Mariners’ starting first baseman.

The Cardinals and Matt Holliday are “very close” to an agreement, tweets Yahoo’s Tim Brown. Brown believes the deal could be reached “in hours.” ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote yesterday that the two sides are close to a possible seven-year deal. Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said a weekend meeting involving Scott Boras and Cards execs focused on a contract worth $17MM annually.

  116. Comment posted by Joe A. on January 5, 2010 at 5:48 pm (#1130725)

    From Rotoworld:

The Mets are debating whether to offer Joel Piniero a two-year contract, but he wants at least a contract equal to the 3-year, $30 million Randy Wolf signed with the Brewers, according to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman.

The 31-year-old was 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 32 starts in ’09, and his 60.2% groundball rate led the entire league. Piniero is undoubtedly the best remaining starter on the free agent market and has been a Mets target through the duration of this offseason. The Dodgers are another potential fit for Piniero.

That’s ridiculous. He’s had one good year out of the last six. I get that he made serious changes to his pitching style, but there’s no way he should be asking for a 3-year contract.

Wolf only had 1 good year in the last 6 also, so its not a bad comp for Piniero. Piniero is actually younger and has been healthier, so he might even be the safer bet to give a 3 year deal.

BUT – I think the Brewers were nuts to give Wolf 3 years and any team that gives Piniero that much is also nuts.

I mean he’s not gonna get on there and say yes we are DEFINITELY signing X guy

Why not? He’s admitted he’s climbing walls to get Molina.

I just thought he was pretty cavalier about starting pitching in general.

    I agree with John.

Omar isn’t going to go out there and weaken his bargaining position.

I’d be shocked if the Mets don’t sign another pitcher. There’s no way they’re going into the season with Jon Neise or Nelson Figueroa as their #5 starter. Like John said, I think it was more about maintaining their bargain position.

And if anyone still thinks Omar has free reign to do what he wants…then I don’t know what to tell you.

He’s not making the decisions anymore, IMO. The problem is now they’ve delegated him to the PR business and he was never any good at that aspect of his job to begin with.

I think Omar just hasn’t settled on what pitcher he is going after, whether a FA or a trade. There is no clear cut best option, so he is still weighing options.

With Molina, its been obvious that he is our first choice all along and even there he said he has interest in other catchers.

He said they went with the same guys last year and everyone thought they were contenders. And he mentioned Niese and Nieve as his #5.

So basically he’s being paid half a million more per and three more years to his deal (likely two.)

    Epic FO Fail.

I think the Mets absolutely will add a SP.

At the same time, I don’t think Omar is scared to go into the season with what we have now and see how things shake out. At the very least, he needs to put that attitude out there in public for negotiating purposes. But I think he really feels that way, too.
