and I don’t think the govt is still putting money into the company. The door has closed.

But, seriously, don’t you think the most fiscally responsible course of action would be to dismantle AIG entirely? It just needs to be gone so that it’s no longer “too big to fail”.

Hello Geeks, early Happy New Year to all. Squad is nursing a mini-hangover.

Continued the boozing after the liquid lunch and watched the Rangers get destroyed at Sean Avery’s bar.

They have sold off the “non-core” businesses. The remaining company is much more solid.

Funny thing is, the dude that bought a bunch of it is “Ace” Greenburg (sp?), who ran the palce before Spitzer went after him.

Casey, who played with Bay on the Pirates and Red Sox, told McCarron:

“That team really needs a guy like that, a gamer, a guy who comes to play every night, to rub off on guys who are maybe thinking about their stats… Sometimes when you watch the Mets, you think it’s a bunch of individuals, and this guy is a role model of someone who grinds it out every day.”

How the fuck does Sean Casey know so much about what the Mets are on the field?

Jason Bay’s new team a nightmare
    By Steve Buckley

They’ll be feeling sorry for the guy.

Imagine: Jason Bay now plays for the Siberia Mets.

The Mets! The fourth most-popular team in New York, trailing the New York Yankees, Staten Island Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Mets, a team for which things got so bad last year that general manager Omar Minaya actually blamed a sportswriter after it was announced that club executive Tony “I’ll Take off My Shirt and Fight You” Bernazard had been fired.

The Mets, whose new ballpark, Citi Field, measures 335 feet to left field. And here’s Jason Bay, a right-handed power hitter, walking away from Fenway Park, whose fabled Green Monster was just perfect for his swing. To say nothing of the fact that left field at Fenway was better-suited for a man of Bay’s defensive limitations.

The Mets. Jason Bay is a Met. Assuming he passes a physical exam and is introduced next week at one of those please-hold-up-the-new-shirt press conferences, are we going to see a really, really, really happy Jason Bay? Or maybe he’ll have his smile painted on.

True, Jason Bay will be paid handsomely for his efforts – $66 million over the next four years, with a vesting option that may guarantee fifth-year cake – but wouldn’t it have made more sense for the guy to grab the four years and $60 million the Red Sox [team stats] were offering last summer?

It seemed like a perfect fit for Bay. He’s a pleasant, easy-going guy who made an easy transition from baseball-dead Pittsburgh to baseball-obsessed Boston when he was traded to the Red Sox, and, again, he was playing in a ballpark that’s made for him. The Bay State! Plus, Bay was playing for a perennial playoff contender after spending most of his career with the laughingstock Pirates and, geez, how many times did Bay say he wanted to play for a winner?

And now he signs with the Mets, a team with big-market bucks and big-market fans who expect a winner, but a team in desperate need of a good, old-fashioned organizational housecleaning. What soured Bay on doing everything in his power to remain with the Red Sox is an unknown, but he seems to have made a decision based solely on money. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with that – we do, after all, live in a capitalistic society – the betting here is that Bay would have wound up with more cash in the long run had he remained with the Sox.

But as much as this is a loss for Bay, who will never be heard from again once he arrives in Siberia, it’s also a loss for the Red Sox. How bad is their offense right now? Well, if you’re attending Friday’s NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park between the Bruins [team stats] and Philadelphia Flyers, take a good, hard look at the final score that’s posted out there in left field. 3-2? 2-1? 1-0? Whatever it is, you’ll be seeing it a lot at Fenway next baseball season.

Don’t buy all this oratorical porridge the Sox are ladling out when asked about their 2010 offense. Remember the Marco Scutaro press conference? Theo Epstein was so effusive that you’d think that on that day in 2003 when he became general manager, his first thought was, “Must . . . get . . . Scutaro.” And then there was the Mike Cameron press conference, during which Epstein put it out there that his new outfielder with the .250 career average and .340 career on-base percentage is an underrated offensive player.

It boils down to this: The Red Sox aren’t as good without Jason Bay and Jason Bay isn’t as good without the Red Sox.

And the Mets are still the Mets.

  22. Comment posted by MyFavoriteBaseballSquadron on December 31, 2009 at 12:24 pm (#1129591)

Fuck the Red Sox, seriously. They were the model for being the red headed step child of the large market teams for years.

All we need to do is fucking win already.

  25. Comment posted by MyFavoriteBaseballSquadron on December 31, 2009 at 12:28 pm (#1129593)

Agreed, it just pisses me off that the Sox are now revered as being the best run franchise ever. I am not discounting their 2 WS rings this decade but they sucked goat dick for just as many, if not more years than the Mets.

Despite not bringing home the hardware in a while, the Mets have never gone as long as the Sox have between WS appearances.

Reading this crap its hard to believe the Mets had the best record in the NL from 2006 through 2008.

Its amazing what one terrible season and one even worse press conference can do to the perception of a team.

Buttmunch! Gubment gave AIG money in return for stock. Have you seen their stock lately? Also AIG is pissed off since the Credit Default Swaps are finally begin to rake in the dough which the gubment now controls most of. An article in last week’s journal said the gubment has already profited 80 billion in unrealized stick gains and CDS revenue.

LaMarr Woodley is an idiot … and spoiled … need proof? Look at what he said to a local TV station about the Bengals and Colts laying down to the Jets.

“Cincinnati is probably going to go into New York and lay down for the Jets and not play them hard, just because they don’t want to see Pittsburgh in it, because they know if we get into the playoffs, we’re a dangerous team,” Woodley said after practice on Wednesday, according to WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh.

“All of them will lay down. No one wants to see Pittsburgh in it. That’s just how it is,” Woodley explained. “Like I said, everybody knows that we’re a dangerous team once we get into the playoffs. No matter how we played throughout the whole year, once we get in the playoffs, Pittsburgh Steelers is a playoff team.”

Woodley isn’t the only one who thinks that teams are tanking it against the likes of the Jets in order to keep the Steelers out. Several league and media insiders have expressed to us strong suspicion that the Colts’ real reason for yanking starters against the Jets on Sunday was to let the Jets into the postseason field, in the hopes of slamming the door on the Steelers, who went into Indy and beat the 14-2 Colts in the 2005 divisional round.

One Steelers source doesn’t think the Colts care.

“Our secondary would seem pretty inviting to [Peyton] Manning,” the source said.

Hey LaMarr, you shouldn’t have hung “L”‘s against the Browns, Raiders, and Chiefs then.

he had some good years in Texas, although 2009 was the first time he ever had over 500 ABs

still, that’s a fairly cheap contract for the Cubbies

Sure but there’s no reason they shouldn’t at least make the playoffs. They’re still a good team and Rothlisberger is actually becoming a better throwing QB. But Polumalu being out really exposed their secondary. Teams can throw at them at will now.
