    Happy boxing day people.

    Has anyone heard if the Mets are at all interested in Sheets or Bedard?

    I would gladly take either or both. Im thinking that between Esocobar, Sheets and Bedard they would all go for probably below what Lackey got. If it were 2007 we wouldve gladly signed all 3 to mega deals and not even thought twice, so I think signing them now at least gives us some kind of hope. 1 or 2 of them have to emerge and we will be str8.
    Like Adam Sandler said about Whoopi Goldberg and Paul Newman being jewish add them together “thats one fine looking jew” ;-)

    Buster Olney, in a post to his blog for ESPN, says the Mets, top starting pitching target is likely to be RHP Joel Pineiro.

    I’d really avoid this guy. He’ll likely cost too much, thus we’ll be saddled with another bad 3-4 contract.
    And he’s more than likely a Dave Duncan project. If we still had The Jacket onboard, I’d be tempted.
    But I have ZERO trust in Warthen working with pitchers.

    Esocobar, Sheets and Bedard

    well, we’ve already got Escobar signed, but I have no idea for how much;
    but Escobar is slated for the set-up role, NOT as a starter

    I don’t see the Mets gambling on BOTH Sheets and Bedard. maybe one or the other;
    but the problem with Sheets is that despite all the injuries, he’s still asking for 12M;
    if he comes down to something like 7M plus easy-to-reach incentives, then he’s probably worth it

    also, keep in mind the Mets probably have only 22-25M to work with this winter

    1.25 mil for Escobar – cheaper than Alex Cora!
    He does have 2 mil in incentives as a starter and 1 mil as a reliever although he is expected to set up.

    Very pleased with having him. He was throwing great in the minors last year as he tried to work his way back without additional surgery, and his lone big league appearance was great. Now that he is cleaned up any innings he does give us should be good ones.

    I am ok with Joel too. He seems to be able to pitch well, at a level above Jon Garland for sure. I know he is a Dave Duncan project – but Duncan got him to pitch differently – he should have the same success as long as he continues to pitch differently and the Mets don’t try to change him. Like I said before – the tape exists now and even Warthen can hit pause and rewind, right?

    His price should be down – I don’t see him getting much more than Marquis, maybe less. He had the better 09 but his last few years have been unimpressive. The yellow flag with Piniero isn’t the lack of Duncan for me – it’s the potentially poor infield defense – thanks to Luis Castillo.
    I think Murphy was pretty good some days at first last year, some days he didn’t know what to do admittedly. He could be above average though. Whenever Pelfrey or Piniero (if we get him) pitches we would need ANderson or Alex at second.

    Let’s pull back our offer to Bay already and sign Jermaine Dye or Marlon Byrd.
    The Red Sox didn’t get bashed when they moved on to sign Cameron – it was a smart move and we should be smart too. The Mets will look bad (worse) if we let this drag out too much longer.

    Same thing with Molina – sign a replacement to 1 year. Barajas will jump probably, because his options to start are closing.

    Going really optimistic…Joel Piniero could outperform John Lackey.
    He always had great stuff and was always death to right handed hitters. And remember, he doesn’t have the forearm concerns that Lackey has.
    IF he finally has figured things out (maybe thanks to Duncan) then maybe last year was the real Joel.
    Tonnes of pitchers have developed late thanks to a new pitch or pitching style – think Curt Schilling, Dave STewart, and Billy Swift. Roy Halladay had great stuff but stunk up teh joint befor ebeing demoted back to A ball to change his arm angle and approach.

    Over on cnnsi.com, they had the 20 top prospects. Every National League East team, other than the Mets, had someone on the list. The Yankees had one too.

    This is what bothers me. Not that the Mets didn’t get Halliday, spend big bucks for Holliday, or something. This is what has to change.

    The Jacket also left tapes for Ollie and Maine. And we all know how they’ve performed under Warthen.

    IF we do go with Pinero, I say 2-year deal, 12M….take it or leave it, no more!!

    You may be right, but I remember this pitcher named Mark Davis..closer for SD..just filthy nasty stuff, late 80’s won a Cy Young as a closer, which has maybe been doen 3 or 4 times..

    Anyway, he left and pitched for a different team the following year and was horrendous..wisdom was he was separated from his Pitching coach, if fact it was a concern at the time.

    I think Joel wants way more than 2/12 (which is below avg for a SP) and Id be very careful grabbing pitchers that Duncan has tutored and expecting them to replicate the success…baseball is a game of constant adjustments..maybe we should sign Duncan

    Good memory, dogcatcher, Mark Davis won the Cy with San Diego in 1989, 44 saves (which was a lot back then)….
    and then he went mostly downhill after leaving SD

    yes 2/12 is maybe low, but as a Mets fan I am sure you would be OK with that gamble.
    2/15 I wouldn’t grump about either.
    maybe he would be willing to do 1 year at 7-8 to further impress upon teams that he is good now.
    Or 2/14 with a nice paying option

    Id rather have them spend 12 mil on pineiro than 35 yo Molina
