Today, Mets GM Omar Minaya admitted that he sucked in a press conference. He then proceeded to announce that he just signed Jeff Francoeur to a ten year contract extension worth up to $15 million a season. Minaya then broke down crying, explaining that he needed “lots and lots of help”.

Since this was a topic of discussion earlier…for Rave. The first and only time I’ll acknowledge any of the Devils 2.5 Cups.

At the beginning of the decade, this Devils team proved very tough to eliminate. In the Eastern Conference finals, the Flyers found that out the hard way. Philly enjoyed a 3-1 series lead over Jersey, but that didn’t sit well with Devils vets like Claude Lemieux, Stevens and Daneyko. They inspired their teammates — including rookies like Scott Gomez, Rafalski and John Madden — and forced a Game 7 showdown in Philly that is best remembered for Stevens’ massive hit on Flyers star Eric Lindros. Elias scored in the final minutes to break a tie and complete the comeback. In the Cup finals, the Devils outlasted the defending-champion Stars in a series that featured a couple of multiple-overtime contests. In Game 6, New Jersey center Jason Arnott clinched the Cup with a goal in the second overtime.

VATICAN CITY – To put it as the devout Ned Flanders would, the Vatican’s newspaper thinks “The Simpsons” are an okely dokely bunch.

L’Osservatore Romano on Tuesday congratulated the show on its 20th anniversary, praising its philosophical leanings as well as its stinging and often irreverent take on religion.

Without Homer Simpson and the other yellow-skinned characters “many today wouldn’t know how to laugh,” said the article titled “Aristotle’s Virtues and Homer’s Doughnut.”

The paper credited “The Simpsons” — the longest-running American animated program — with opening up cartoons to an adult audience.

The show is based on “realistic and intelligent writing,” it said, though it added there was some reason to criticize its “excessively crude language, the violence of certain episodes or some extreme choices by the scriptwriters.”

Religion, from the snore-evoking sermons of the Rev. Lovejoy to Homer’s face-to-face talks with God, appears so frequently on the show that it could be possible to come up with a “Simpsonian theology,” it said.

Homer’s religious confusion and ignorance are “a mirror of the indifference and the need that modern man feels toward faith,” the paper said.

It commented on several religion-themed episodes, including one in which Homer calls for divine intervention by crying: “I’m not normally a religious man, but if you’re up there, save me, Superman!”

“Homer finds in God his last refuge, even though he sometimes gets His name sensationally wrong,” L’Osservatore said. “But these are just minor mistakes, after all, the two know each other well.”

Any movie nerd will tell you the dubbed-over version is for the hoi polloi that don’t want to read. You want to hear the real actor’s inflections and emotion that comes through the spoken word. Not sure if this snobbery applies to the hentai dorks

Sadly normal: Guys stabbing each other or shooting their parents over videogames. Unusual: Old woman stabbing young boy over videogames.

A 55-year-old woman taking care of a 13-year-old boy apparently got drunk, and when he wouldn’t stop playing Xbox 360, she hit him over the head, and then stabbed him in the stomach with a kitchen knife. She says he stabbed himself.

Miraculously, she didn’t get any jail time, just 300 hours of community service, presumably not in a youth center. [Scotsman via MaxConsole, Image via the rhumb line/Flickr]

    New York Mets: Draft Review
    by Marc Hulet – 12/23/2009 – Comments (6) – Share this Article

    General Manager: Omar Minaya
    Scouting Director: Rudy Terrasas

    2006-2009 Draft Results:
    First three rounds included
    x- over-draft signees ($200,000 or more)

    2009 1st Round: None
    2. Steve Matz, LHP, NY HS
    3. Robbie Shields, SS, Florida Southern
x- Zach Dotson, LHP, Georgia HS

Matz failed to appear in a pro game after signing… He should begin 2010 in extended spring training, although the organization is known for challenging its prospects. Dotson did not play after signing, either. Shields had a poor offensive debut after a bit of a rough junior year of college. The shortstop hit just .178/.273/.267 in 146 short-season at-bats. He struck out too much (21.9%) for a player with limited power output (.089 ISO). It’s also expected that Shields will eventually move away from shortstop, possibly to second base. This certainly was not the most inspired draft of ’09… much like the club’s other recent drafts – with ’08 as the possible exception.

2008 1st Round: Ike Davis, OF, Arizona State
    1. Reese Havens, IF, South Carolina
1S. Brad Holt, RHP, UNC Wilmington
    2. Javier Rodriguez, OF, Puerto Rico HS
    3. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF, California NAIA

This draft is about as good as it gets for Mets fans… especially if you look back over the past few years. Davis took a little bit of time to get going in pro ball, but he’s firmly on the Top 10 list this season (due to post on the site tomorrow), along with supplemental first rounder Holt, and third-rounder Nieuwenhuis.

Havens’ first full season was a disappointment and he suffered from a weak BABIP of .275. Overall, he hit .247/.361/.422 in 360 at-bats. On the plus side, he has shown some power with an ISO of .175 and a willingness to take a walk (13.3% walk rate). Havens also needs to find a position on the field. Rodriguez has proven to be quite raw. He hit .230/.285/.338 in his second go-around at rookie ball. The outfielder also posted a strikeout rate of 28.1%, which is not justifiable with an ISO of just .108. It would also be nice to see him attempt more than three steals.

Keep an eye on pitchers Scott Shaw (13th round) and Kyle Allen (24th round).

    2007 1st Round: None
1S. Eddie Kunz, RHP, Oregon State
1S. Nathan Vineyard, LHP, Georgia HS
    2. Scott Moviel, RHP, Ohio HS
    2. Brant Rustich, RHP, UCLA
    3. Eric Niesen, LHP, Wake Forest
    3. Stephen Clyne, RHP, Clemson

The club lacked a first-round selection and it nabbed Kunz, who was supposed to be almost MLB-ready. Unfortunately, he’s had a rough time in pro ball and he posted a 5.53 FIP in triple-A in ’09, while also posting a poor strikeout rate (5.61 K/9) and a high walk rate (4.57 BB/9). Vineyard has battled injuries and has appeared in just 11 games in three seasons. Rustich has also had injury problems, but he’s been on the field more than Vineyard, and he’s also shown quite a bit of potential – 2.47 FIP, 8.69 K/9 rate in 47.2 high-A innings in ’09.

Moviel has shown flashes of potential and he reached high-A in ’09 where he allowed 61 hits in 64.1 innings of work and posted a strikeout rate of 6.44 K/9. He’s shown good control for a young player that stands 6’11”. Niesen reached double-A in ’09, after beginning the year in high-A, but his control suffered and his walk rate rose to 4.45 BB/9. His strikeout rate also jumped, though, to 9.22 K/9. Clyne wasn’t so luck in his jump to double-A in ’09. After posting a 3.09 FIP in the high-A bullpen, it jumped to 4.58 in double-A and his walk rate rose from 4.33 to 6.35 BB/9.

Keep an eye on sleeper prospect and third baseman Zach Lutz. He spent much of the year in high-A and hit .284/.381/.441 with a .157 ISO in 356 at-bats. Right-hander Dillon Gee (21st round) showed a lot of potential and reached triple-A in ’09 but he hurt his shoulder and missed most of this past season.

    2006 1st Round: None
    2. Kevin Mulvey, RHP, Villanova
    3. Joe Smith, RHP, Wright State

Mulvey was used as a trading chip in the Johan Santana deal, and he was later flipped from Minnesota to Arizona. Smith spent some time in the Mets’ bullpen before getting dealt to Cleveland in the three-team J.J. Putz deal. Daniel Murphy was a nice acquisition in the 13th round, as his versatility has been of value to the Mets.

Oh, I’m too old for that shit anyway. If it ends up us sitting on your couch playing NHL10 until we pass out, that works for me too.

    haha awesome

I won on a penalty shot the other night in OT in NHL10, against the Flyers no less. Right off the opening face off I carried the puck into the zone, got tripped and then tooled Ray Emery for the GWG. SUCK IT PHILLY AGAIN!!!

hahahah Nice. Best I ever did, I was in OT, took a shot, goaltender blocked it and it dropped at his feet and right before he went down to cover it, I managed to poke it into the net.

John Lackey’s five-year, $82.8 million contract with the Red Sox includes a “conditional club option” for 2015 at the league minimum.
Interesting. The option would only kick in if an old elbow injury forces Lackey to miss significant time after surgery. The big-money deal deal is front-loaded, with $18 million in 2010 and $15,250,000 every year from 2011-2014. Lackey, 31, was 11-8 with 3.83 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 27 starts last season.

    and a front loaded deal

god why cant we ever do this shit

Have you done Be A GM Mode? I’m about 10 games into my 2nd season. Won the Cup against Nashville. Revamped the team during the draft of the 1st season. Traded away all the players Rangers fans want traded (Drury, Rozi and Redden) and brought in Lecavalier, Barrett Jackman and Tim Gleason. For a cheap D that can provide good offense trade for Chris Campoli. Also some of the guys in the farm are valuable trade chips. I got Frolov from LA to put on my top line. Scored about 60+ goals with Gaborik.

I assume in GM mode, you have to deal with the Cap/salaries? Or is it just talent/roster spots?

Gotta love the ’08 draft. The ’06 draft isn’t that bad either. What a disaster ’07 was though.

The “win now” mentality really cost us. I’ve never seen someone draft like that, to help the club immediately.

And the fact that none of the players have panned out doesn’t help. If one of those guys could have actually helped the big league club 2008 might have ended differently.

Well, I think that’s a lesson in the fact that even college players aren’t ready for the majors. It’s such a different beast.

Yeah, drafting, contracts, salary cap, injury replacement.

They have slightly improved trade logic but the fact that I was able to trade Lisin/Sanguinetti/minor leaguer for Vinny Lecav still means it’s a little flawed.
