i think they try to compete, for sure

i’m not sold they try to win.

That’s already a step ahead of the McClatchy era Pirates. They weren’t even trying.

teams that pocket money over spending it on payroll, specifically profit/revenue sharing money are disgusting and should burn in hell

there are no excuses for that behavior and i wish baseball would mandate that money be spent on payroll

there is nothing worse that that kind of shit, i agree

i’m not sure we’re trying to win right now

If we weren’t trying to win (compete) right now, we’d have shed a lot more payroll. This is still a hell of a high priced team to have fail.

Then we spend that on Cora.

wellll you could make the argument they need to appear to be trying to keep fans paying for tickets

they shed payroll, no one goes in 2010

but i admit, this is the pure skeptic/cynic in me.

You know what, I was thinking about that a few weeks ago and I have no proof but….

I really do think the Braves/Red Sox/Wagner had an under the table agreement. I can’t explain any other way that Wags wouldn’t have accepted arbitration. He would have made MORE money with a team that’s MORE likely to play postseason games…. Something was up. I think Wags and the Braves already had a deal in place. Boston gave them permission to haggle before the season ended in return for the promise Wags wouldn’t accept arbi.

True. But there’s a fine line. If your team sucks, it doesn’t matter what your payroll is: people will stop coming. So either they lower payroll drastically to stay in the black or they try to win to bring up attendance.

Who does that in an NFL game?

By the way, best trick play I’ve ever seen: Steelers back in the Kordell days.

Kordell makes like the line isn’t forming up for the right play, looks disgusted, play clock almost down, throws up his hands and starts walking towards the sidelines like he’s going to call time.

Center snaps the ball to the back (Can’t remember who at the time. Maybe Bettis?) and lobs it for a first down.

  61. Comment posted by Ed in Westchester on December 23, 2009 at 12:31 pm (#1127113)

LAS VEGAS – The proposed megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. was thrown into jeopardy Tuesday with a demand by Mayweather’s camp that both fighters be subjected to Olympic-type drug testing in the weeks leading up to the bout.

Mayweather’s manager said the fight would not go on if Pacquiao didn’t agree to blood testing under standards followed by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

“There is no fight without Olympic-style random drug testing,” Leonard Ellerbe said.

Mayweather’s camp claims it was told Pacquiao would not agree to have his blood tested within 30 days of the fight because of personal superstitions. But Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, said he could live with some testing, as long as it wasn’t too close to the fight and wasn’t overly intrusive.

“I will not let my fighter take a blood test the day before a fight,” Roach said. “If they give me a five-day window or something like that I have no problem with it.”
Roach said he hoped the issue wasn’t brought up as a way to get Mayweather out of the fight.

“He’s looking for a back door out,” Roach said. “We’re eager to fight.”

“I am still hopeful because I really believe this decision didn’t come from Manny Pacquiao, it came from somebody else,” Schaefer said. “It’s up to Manny Pacquiao to prove me right or wrong.”

Pacquiao has never failed a post-fight urine test in Nevada, including his last fight when he stopped Miguel Cotto. Mayweather also has passed urine tests in the state after his fights.

Fighters, though, are not routinely tested before bouts for performance-enhancing drugs, and there are no blood tests done for those drugs.

Mayweather’s father, Floyd Sr., said after the Cotto fight that he suspected Pacquiao was using performance-enhancing drugs to move up and win titles in so many weight classes. Ellerbe did not make that claim, but said that for a fight of such magnitude fans deserve to be confident neither fighter is cheating.
“If it’s good enough for LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps and Lance Armstrong why isn’t it good enough for Manny Pacquiao?” Ellerbe asked. “The fans and sports deserve a level playing field.”

Travis Tygart, executive director of the USADA, said he had talked to representatives of both fighters about providing testing. Tygart said he welcomed the request as he would for any sport that does not have stringent Olympic-type testing.

“I think every sport that wants to have clean athletes it’s a sign of a step forward to have out of competition testing,” Tygart said. “It’s an essential thing to do if you want to protect the integrity of the sport. Clean athletes want a level playing field.”

Tygart noted Olympic athletes are tested often and without notice. He said less than a teaspoon of blood is removed out of an average of 380 teaspoons in the normal human and that it regenerates within an hour of being withdrawn.

Blood tests, he said, can find things urine tests can’t, like the use of human growth hormone, synthetic hemoglobin or blood transfusions, all of which “certainly would aid in an endurance-type event.”

Ellerbe said he couldn’t imagine why Pacquiao wouldn’t agree, especially considering both fighters would likely make more than $25 million for the bout.

“Only Manny Pacquiao can answer that question,” Ellerbe said. “The ball is in his court.”

One thing DiPietro hasn’t lost during his time away from the team is his dry sense of humor. A reporter asked DiPietro if he knew where he was at, referring to his rehab process.

The goalie, sporting a full beard, gave his facial hair a swipe before responding: “Syosset.”

Biron is used to being a backup. Somehow Philly thought otherwise. Oh well, here’s to 20 years of not figuring out that having a goalie that isn’t complete dogshit in the net or doesn’t have epic meltdowns in the playoffs makes a big difference in the spring.

How the Flyers only made it to the finals once in all those years they were good in the 90’s and early part of this decade is beyond me. They choked in 97 and they choked in 2000 when they had the Devils on the ropes until Stevens changed the momentum of that series with knocking out an already vegetable head Lindros (who Glen Sather found as a good fit for some awful Rangers teams). The Flyers are akin to the Mets of hockey.

Well, you get DiPietro back and give him 2/3rds of the starts. Biron is just a backup so who gives a shit. Roloson gets you something back you can use, if you can find a team that needs a goaltender to make the playoffs (Philly?) It just comes down to, you should be looking at 2010-11 and not worrying so much about now.

Looking at that list of pitchers its surprising we made that playoffs at all this decade.

Only way to “win” an argument with your wife/girlfriend: somehow convince them it was a misunderstanding.

How far away is LA from SD again? It’s a hike from what I remember and even then the last time I did a ride to SD it was from OC.

They choked in 97 and they choked in 2000 when they had the Devils on the ropes until Stevens changed the momentum of that series with knocking out an already vegetable head Lindros

Difference between then and now: Stevens would probably get suspended for that hit (not saying if that’s right or wrong).

Because when Lackey and his lovely wife – a Maine native and University of New Hampshire grad – were in town last week, they popped into a Kenmore Square boite for a bite. Krista put her fur coat on a chair, where, we’re told, an inebriated patron puked on it!

Nationals make sense for Capps — 10:52 a.m.

While free-agent reliever Matt Capps still could sign with the Cubs, the better guess is that he will pick the Nationals when he decides between the two teams on Wednesday.

The Nats fear that the Cubs will make Capps a better financial offer. The Cubs, however, might prefer to move more deliberately in their search for bullpen help, sources say.

What’s more, the Nats are offering Capps something that the Cubs can not – the opportunity to close. If Capps went to the Cubs, he would set up for Carlos Marmol.

The Nats’ sales pitch to Capps essentially boils down to this – sign a two-year deal with us, earn 60 or more saves during that time and then hit the free-agent market at age 28.

Capps, whose previous team was the Pirates, would stand a better chance of winning a World Series with the Cubs, but the Nats at least are trying to improve.

Catcher Ivan Rodriguez and right-hander Jason Marquis already have signed free-agent contracts with the club, and left-handed reliever Eddie Guardado is on the verge of an agreement.

The Nats still want to add another starting pitcher and free-agent second baseman Orlando Hudson, who would further strengthen their defense.

By continuing to add pitching, one Nats official said, the team can avoid rushing its top young arms – most notably right-handers Stephen Strasburg and Drew Storen, both of whom were first-round draft picks in 2009.

“If you keep them in the minors until September, you know that you will have done well in December,” the official said. – Ken Rosenthal

Jon Heyman of SI.com believes the Giants offered a two-year, $12 million deal to free-agent Mark DeRosa, which he has yet to accept.

Heyman wonders if DeRosa is waiting to hear from the Mets, Yankees or Braves.

Rave, agree but the NHL is suspending peeps on the “flagrantly going at the head” thing (they busted Matt Cooke on it a few weeks ago). Totally legal hit that just happened to hit the guy in the head because he had his head down.
