I’m not crazy about college pitchers in general. They pick up too many bad habits facing aluminum bats all the time and they are often over worked. Then, because of their age, they’re expected to make it the big leagues within a couple of seasons.

At least with HS pitchers you know you will have the chance to work with them for 4 or 5 years in the minors.

taking someone that wasnt good enough to start ALREADY BY the college level just says it shouldnt pan out

Depends. Maybe you have just one amazing pitch? And sometimes it’s because the guy is a great hitter too. So, he’ll DH and relieve to get both abilities in (Darren Dreifort is an example).

LOS ANGELES – A Los Angeles judge has denied a request from an AIDS advocacy group calling for mandatory use of condoms on porn sets.

Judge David Yaffe on Tuesday rejected a petition from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation that contended county health officials hadn’t done enough to prevent sexually transmitted diseases in the porn industry, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The group sued the county in July after data showed there were more than 3,700 STD cases over the past five years reported by a clinic that serves porn actors.

In denying the foundation’s request, Yaffe said the county has broad discretion in how it oversees public health. The group plans to appeal the decision.

Ken Takahashi has signed a contract with the Hiroshima Carp.
Takahashi, 40, was released by the Mets in October after posting a 2.96 ERA and 23/14 K/BB ratio in 27 1/3 innings of relief. It was his first season state-side and he clearly wasn’t happy with the environment.

Phillies Agree To Terms With A Reliever?
By Luke Adams [December 23 at 3:26pm CST]

The Philadelphia Phillies have an agreement in place with a relief pitcher, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com — we just don’t know yet who the pitcher is. Salisbury’s source says that the agreement with the mystery player is pending a physical, which will occur in the first week of the new year.

    Athletics Sign Coco Crisp
By Tim Dierkes [December 23 at 3:04pm CST]

WEDNESDAY, 3:04pm: The Athletics finalized the signing of Crisp today, according to a team press release. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has the specifics: the deal with pay Crisp $4.75MM in 2010, with a $5.75MM option for 2011. The buyout for the 2011 option is $500K, making the one-year contract worth $5.25MM.

With Fernando Rodney and the Angels having agreed to terms, the two likeliest candidates for the Phillies’ bullpen appear to be Danys Baez and Mike MacDougal. ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark linked Philadelphia to Baez earlier, and another of Salisbury’s sources confirms that the team’s focus has been on the right-hander lately. We also heard earlier today from Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, who said that the Phillies had been in touch with MacDougal. Scott Lauber of the News Journal mentions some other possibilities, but agrees that Baez and MacDougal look like the top two relief targets for Philadelphia.

The beauty of the wild card is that we don’t have to beat the Phillies to make the playoffs.

The Mets obviously have a lot of wholes to fill, but it really doesn’t take much to be a wc contender.

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI Radio, “The Red Sox have had internal discussions about extending their organizational budget to potentially allow for another offer for free-agent OF Jason Bay.”

If the Sox are gonna outbid us for Bay and go to 16-17M per, they can have him. He’s just not worth that kind of money.

I’m slowly starting to buy into some of Olney’s plan; notably, spread the money around to fill holes.

And I’m absolutely in favor of giving Orlando Hudson a one-year deal and worry about trading Castillo later.

Timmy, I think you should write a best-selling memoir. Sell loads of copies and get rich and famous. Then you can get caught or otherwise admit that is was largely fiction. Then I’d get to visit you on the sets of Oprah and Conan O’Brien when you go on the talk show circuit to discuss how sorry you are for deceiving all of your many fans.
