That’s not a HUGE difference considering Castillo is the suck. My point is they both are lame.

No, that actually is a pretty huge difference.

Castillo has been worth $4.1 million. Feliz has been worth $8.1 million.

Feliz is worth $2 million more than Kevin Kouzmanoff.

I really think WAR overvalues defense myself.

That’s part of the reason I think it overvalues it. For instance, I find it hard to believe Feliz’s defense makes him more valuable than Larry.

It’s Wins Above Replacement, similar to BP’s WARP. It is derived using wOBA and UZR. 10 runs added = 1 win.

You can read about wOBA here and here

wOBA translates into WRAA (which is a runs above average total) which is then divided by ten to get Wins.

You can read about UZR here.

I do as well, but I think it is closer to the real value than what we use without it.

I think it’s somewhere in between. It’s just so damned hard to quantify. Like I said, I really don’t think Feliz is more valuable than Larry. I just don’t.

He’s young and he’s got skills. Probably just learning routes and stuff.

Brian Moritz, the BMets writer, just said this:

    – Though it’s been debunked by both Keith Law and Joel Sherman, the talk last night was of the Mets’ reported rejected of trading Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese, Fernando Martinez and B-Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada to Toronto for Roy Halladay.

But, just for fun, let’s say that offer is on the table. Would you make that deal?

I’m in the minority here, but I say no. To me, giving up both Parnell and Niese is too much. Make it just one of them, and you’ve got a deal. But giving up both a power arm out of the bullpen (who, don’t forget, was pretty good earlier this season) and a potential fifth starter (and one of the Mets’ big needs is depth in their rotation) for one guy is too much.

    What’s everyone else think?

So if the Jays offered the Tigers Halladay for Zumaya and Armando Galarraga, he’d say no?

A fifth starter and a reliever? WHAT?

What are you talking about? People who use WAR know exactly what it means. Sorry we don’t like to be dogmatic in our analysis. WAR is not perfect either, and it won’t be the last or best Wins stat. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value.

Echo what Lunk said. Sometimes guys with good skills have a tough time reading balls of the bat, taking good routes, etc. It’s another skill that takes time.

I just heard KLaw on ESPN radio today….he said that the Jays would never do a deal with the Mets for Halladay unless Jenrry Mejia was included; thus the bogus rumors….Jays want MLB ready talent, not AA or A-ball prospects….speculated the Dodgers would get Halladay if Kershaw is the centerpiece….over all, Law still puts a Halladay deal at less than 50%

There are a lot of behind the scenes formulas that only make sense, in many ways, to the people that derived them. I can not possibly explain how they are derived.

I do take these stats with the grain of salt of “I need to see if they sync up to real world results”. If they do, I follow them.

I don’t got time, I’m leaving work, but I’ll do my best.

wOBA uses linear weights. Basically, everything a player does has a run value relative to an out. We got these values by combing through historic data. HR is worth 1.7 runs relative to an out, a single .77 runs, etc. We then put tally up everything a player does and put this in a rate designed to look like OBA (called wOBA).

But instead making it look like a rate, you can just tally them all up and it’ll tell you how many runs they have. Divide that number by 10, and after adjusting for league, park, and era, you get your offensive win total.

Defense is a whole ‘nother story I can’t get into right now, but I suggested looking it up.

I tried to follow one of the formulas once and all I could do is sit there and go “Okay, they pulled that number out of their ass because it fit.”

But, in the end, if it fits, it fits.

its like watching soccer on ESPN… taco bell logos all over the place, you cant even see the ball. Anywhere but the states, you have a screen with nothing on it but the action… once in a while they show the score, never a useless logo… its tacky, its bad design, and its shows that you could give a frick less about what you’re doing. SURE GUYS, THROW LOGOS ALL OVER, WHERE THEY HAVE NO PURPOSE BUT TO CLUTTER THE PAGE AND BRAINWASH MY READERS.

Dont get me wrong, I dont mind a few ads placed outside of the content, on top on the side whatever, you gotta keep your business afloat somehow. But when a fellow met fan who I truly appreciated starts getting this crazy about it (i.e putting them everywhere, bigger than the mets logos) then its time to say enough is enough. Its information overload. They want you to look at that logo and burn it into your skull. You are a cow being branded and cerrone is the mean redneck with the flaming hot stick.
