WBC Rant # 37

KRod just threw his second four out save in the last week.

Let’s backup a second and re-read that sentence again.

First off; I don’t expect KRod to come into any games this season for the Mets in the 8th inning. That’s precisely the reason why the Amazin’s acquired JJ Putz. Therefore, KRod needs to be pitching ONE INNING ONLY !!!

Secondly; It is way too early in the spring for KRod to be throwing with such velocity to begin with. He needs to be building arm strength right now, not letting it all fly along with his emotions set at “eleven”.  And just last week, KRod warmed up three times during a game before he closed it out. That’s totally crazy.

It’s easy to recognize that KRod threw a ton of innings last season when he broke the single season saves record. The 27 year old righty has awesome stuff, however his velocity is down quite a bit for a relatively young arm (he’s not 37 year old Billy Wagner or 39 year old Mo Rivera). There is certainly cause for concern here. At this point I’d be strongly advising KRod to take it easy as it’s a damn long season. How about saving some bullets for September? Or better yet; October.

I realize that Frankie is doing it for his country but let’s be honest here; does Luis Sojo, the Venezuelan Manager, really care about KRod’s ability to throw effectively later this season when it counts for the Mets? I think not. Sojo is focused on bringing a big ol’ Trophy back to El Presidente Hugo Chavez –at all costs. Meanwhile, it is the Mets who will pay KRod’s salary for the next three plus years and Met fans who ultimately are counting on Rodriguez all summer to ward off the possibility of a late season three-peat collapse.

I will tell you that if KRod winds up with a sore arm, shoulder or worse and has to be shut down in August, I will be cursing the WBC and all of the boneheads who allowed these players to cut loose way too early. After all, look at all the injuries that are piling up. In the last five days, Team USA players Chipper Jones, Dustin Pedroia, Matt Lindstrom and Ryan Braun are all hurting. And I’m willing to wager that both Jake Peavy and Roy Oswalt, two very, very good pitchers, wind up with pedestrian seasons this year after cranking it up way too early this spring.

Mark my words.
