Happy Black Friday everybody. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
I don’t have as much time on here as some of the rest of you do, but when I do get some free time I do like to converse with other serious Met fans.
Just as I’m sure a lot of you have played out the Mets current offseason in your head with moves you would like to see the team make, I have as well, and would like to share them with you. I know that I’m dreaming here, but that is what the hot stove league is all about, right?
The Mets two biggest needs are pitching, pitching, and more pitching or more specifically SPs & bullpen (closer). With all the free agent talk of C.C. Sabathia, Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, and even our own Oliver Perez and the truckload of money each of these guys is asking for. Carlos Silva signed last year for how much again? As well as the draft picks the signing team will have to surrender to obtain these guys I see a much better option. And I’m sure you have already guessed from my title that option is Jake Peavy.
The big obstacles are what would it take to get Jake Peavy and would he even waive his no trade clause to come here? As for what it would take to bring Jake Peavy here, Omar should offer a trade centered around F-Mart, Niese, and Aaron Heilman. Just as supposedly the Red Sox allegedly offered Manny Ramirez to the Mets for Milledge a few years back, I don’t think F-mart’s current trade value is going to get much higher if it already hasn’t dropped now. After Milledge’s value dropped he ended up being dealt for Church & Schneider over a year later instead of Manny. We don’t know if F-Mart will develop into the next Jose Reyes or Alex Ochoa, but his value is starting to decline and for Jake Peavy I would be more than willing to try and take that chance now.
As for Peavy not wanting to come to NY, that is a hurdle that could be overcome, IMHO. Omar and company supposedly pride themselves on meeting in person with players and talking with them about NY. Why don’t he do this with Peavy and tell him how the Mets are trying to build a yearly competitive championship club. Sell him that by coming to the Amazings and teamed with another move that OM is going to make (read on), they could be the final pieces for a championship club. A championship team whose main ingredients (Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Santana, Maine, & Pelfrey) are ALL under 32 years of age. Maybe even discuss Kevin Garnett coming to the Celtics as a good comparison. Several current and ex-Mets didn’t exactly want to come to NY (Mex, Kevin McReynolds, Beltran, Delgado, etc) at the start either but ended up thriving. To me this is an obstacle that could be overcome if OM sold him on the team seriously wanting to win a championship with him.
As for what Peavy who is only 27 years old and won’t take 140 mil to sign would bring to the Mets…..having Johan Santana (29) and Jake Peavy as the teams top two pitching ACES for the next 4-5 years is truly what dreams are made of. Throw in Maine and Pelfrey slotted behind them and that is without a doubt the best 1-4 in the majors. For a package centered around F-mart (who we never know if he will live up to expectations or not), Niese, and Heilman and a sitdown from Omar and company we could have the best 1-4 SPs in all of MLB who are all still under 30 years of age. Braves of the 1990’s part II anybody?
The 2nd more obvious part of my plan would be to sign K-Rod who is also only 26 years old. After adding the 27 year old Jake Peavy and the 26 year old Francisco Rodriguez to the Mets roster the last part of the offseason would be spent bringing in lesser names for the 5th starter, bullpen help, and the bench. These two big moves should greatly benefit the Mets the next 4-5 years with players who are among the best at what they do and all still under 30 years of age. And they also wouldn’t add as much to the teams overall salary as say trying to sign a Sabathia, Teixeria, or Manny Ramirez would. By letting Ollie go and offering him arbitration, we could get back two high draft picks that we would lose from signing K-Rod.
Now does anybody have Padres GM Kevin Towers telephone number for OM?
Hey Super T.
You might want to check a couple of pieces I wrote. The first is about K-Rod and the second is about Peavy. It should shed some light into the obstacles the Mets face in both signing K-Rod and dealing for Peavy.
K-Rod
Peavy
Thanks Mike, I missed your previous articles and you did a good job with them!
Based off the comments you got on Peavy I guess I’m in the minority. I would drive F-mart, Niese, and Heilman (or Parnell) to the airport in a NY minute to land Peavy. Do fans not remember how dominate Santana was during the season? In the 2nd half, you could pretty well guarantee a Mets win on the days Santana pitched before the game was even played. Imagine having that feeling for 2 days in a row (Santana/Peavy) instead of just one. And Peavy is 2 years younger than Santana.
As for K-Rod, I didn’t say in my journal but I have posted before that I don’t see the Mets having much if any competition to sign him. And I don’t see any team giving him 5 years. My guess is the Mets offer him 3 years and $45M and his agent comes back with 4 years and $60M and they end up agreeing to 3 years with an option for 4, or 4 years and less than $15M a season.
I don’t want a guy that has to be sold on living here. If he doesn’t like the lifestyle then he can go somewhere else. We’ve seen this before with Glavine and Hampton.
Doc, I don´t think FRod has anything against NY. It´s just that the Mets have a tradition of personal wine-and-dine recruitment. In fact, I think he´s eager to come to the Mets. I wouldn´t be surprised to see him sign eventually for 3 yrs/$40-42 mill.
I think Doc was talking about Peavy. I’ve never heard K-Rod say anything about NYC either.
