Thank Yous and Suggestions

While 2008 might have been a failure for the Mets, it was a successful season for MetsGeek. In our fourth year, I think our content was more consistent than it had been in quite some time, our community continued to grow, we covered our first amateur draft, we found ourselves featured in USA Today, and we saw our two millionth visitor. Not a bad season by any measure. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all those who made it such a success.

That means our regular staff of featured writers over the past season: Dan Scotto, Chris McCown, John Peterson, Jeff Mathews, Pat Andriola, and the newly arrived Mike Newman. They were the ones we counted on to provide the backbone of our content, and I think they did a fantastic job. Thanks, guys.

It means our two recappers, Milo Taibi and Chuck Buono, who had the most thankless jobs on the entire website. They easily posted the highest word counts over the course of the season of anyone here, and they were reliable, punctual, poignant, and too often unrecognized. We barely missed a game this year, and it’s entirely thanks to their efforts. You have no idea how difficult it is to write after a crushing Mets loss, but they did it, and spectacularly at that. They deserve everyone’s hearty thanks, as well as our own.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t include Howard Megdal, who contributed the daily haikus that were included in those recaps. My two favorite Haikus of the year: September 18th and August 30th. Thanks, Howard.

It also means Aaron Dorman, who was nice enough to pester total strangers on our behalf. Aaron was our interviewer, and he really did a great job coming up with interesting people to question and interesting things to ask them. Another in a long list of things Eric and I didn’t want to do, and we’ll miss him next year. Thanks and good luck, Aaron.

And of course it means those we interviewed: Tim Marchman, Paul Hagen, Juan C. Rodriguez, Barry Svrluga, Ted Berg, Joe Coburn and Kathy Foronjy, Bryan Hoch, Will Carroll, Tom Tango, Howard Medgal, Scott Brown, Kevin Goldstein, Adam Rubin, Alex Carver, Ed Shakespeare, Matt Cerrone, and Matt Silverman. These people gladly donated their time to us, and I thank them profusely for their generosity.

It means our guest writers from 2008: Kalyan Pokala, Matt Himelfarb, Marc Normandin, Jessica Bader, Russlan Abouhassan, Sky Kalkman, Stephen Hubbell, Zubin Mehta, Paul Horan, and Andrew Beaton. They all contributed to varying degrees, but all their contributions were most welcome and duly noted. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It means MetsGeek community leaders sheadenizen and Danny, who organized Geek Day 2008. One of the most special things about this place is that we can convince 30-plus people to travel to Pittsburgh for a Mets game. When Geek Day was left to us in 2006, it was a joke; in sheadenizen’s capable hands, it was organized, efficient, and an event not to be missed. Thank you both, and thanks to all who attended. I hope to see even more of you next season.

And most of all, it means you, our loyal readers and community. Without your patronage and feedback, we would have given up long ago. If I could thank each and every one of you individually, I would, but this will have to do.

* * *

We’d like to continue to deserve your readership, so we’re asking for your help. We want your feedback. We’re sure there are some things we do well, but we also realize there are ways we can improve.

In the comments below, let us know what you like about MetsGeek. Let us know what you don’t like. Are there any new features you’d like to see? Would you like more interviews? Book reviews? More minor league stuff? Statistical analysis? Scouting reports? Have you seen something on another site that you’d like to see implemented here? Let us know, and we’ll try our hardest to accommodate.

If you don’t have an account or don’t want to leave a comment, it doesn’t mean we don’t want to hear from you. On the contrary; we’d like to hear from you even more. We know our regular commenters will continue to show up no matter what. But we’d like to see what we can do to draw more of our casual readers into the fold. Feel free to contact us here, also.

No matter how often you check in or comment, we’d like to hear from you.

Thanks again,

Eric and Alex

As they say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

You guys have been doing a terrific job.
I personally see no need for major changes, so I’l leave that to the other posters.

That said, the only thing I would like to see updated regularly is the link to the Mets org chart.
Although the date reads 9/1/2008, it still has Glavine, Randolph and LoDuca on it! :)

Thanks again guys for all your hard work!!

Yeah, those things on the sidebar are a bitch. Unless you really keep up with it, they becomes a huge hassle to keep current. We might just start linking to the Baseball-Reference depth chart which isn’t as nice or precise, but it requires a lot less maintenance.

Any way to have the comments “page” after 100 comments on a blackberry like they do on non-pda’s?

Otherwise, I agree with john, some more minor league info would be great.

    Thanks for the site.

    Notes from SI.com’s Jon Heyman…

    * The Yankees apparently want to sign two free agent starters out of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe. If Sabathia is one of them they’d be looking at a total outlay of $200MM or more.
    * Heyman believes the nation’s struggling economy might temper spending, but not in the Yankees’ case.
    * Heyman doesn’t see the Angels as terribly gung-ho about retaining closer Francisco Rodriguez.
    * People closer to Jamie Moyer say he wants to pitch until he’s 50. Moyer didn’t rule it out when asked in August.

Flaunting your iPhones about you bastards! Wait, I’ve got an iTouch which I got for free via the Apple Back-to-School offer this year! OK. Now I don’t feel so bad. ;o)

Anyway, great job on the site kids! I especially like being able to vent here while the game is in progress. Though every once in a while it would be nice to sing and dance rather than vent. :o(

    Keep up the great work!

You guys do a great job.

One thought: Whenever I read the upcoming series pitching matchups, I always wonder about the bullpens. It would be great if you could add a brief paragraph on the bullpens at the end, like pointing out a few key matchups or the overall performance of the opposing bullpen (against the mets or generally).

Oh and the monthly recaps are by far my favorite thing on this site. They can be depressing, but I love reading them.

While I would say the MetsGeek community is great, and the dialogue back and forth is a good read, I do think you need to keep up more with the original “geeky” content (i.e. more postings with intersting statistical observations and analysis.

Perhaps for some new ideas on where to go with this site, take a look at “http://www.footballoutsiders.com”.

If I miss a game (rare), I mainly just want to know what happened, and the internet has abundant game recaps. I would suggest that you save yourselves a lot of effort and scrap them.

What I want more of are the two main Met things I can’t get elsewhere on the internet:

    1) Minor leaguers information (like who throws what pitches)

    2) Cutting-edge* stats explained and used to evaluate our players

Separately, I would suggest more opportunities to meet up to watch games on TV in NYC. I had to miss the one in August, and haven’t noticed any others mentioned. There’s enough of us, it shouldn’t be hard to get critical mass for a game a month.

    *or at least unfamiliar

I’ll have you know that the money I use to keep my local orphanage open comes from my Metsgeek recaps. So apparently, you want little Corky, Anthony, and Tommy to be thrown out into the streeets like garbage. How heartless of you.

Anybody watching the Dodgers - Phillies game? I would love us to get Casey Blake to play LF for us. I think he’s the type of player we need to have on our team - someone who does the little things.
