Four Reasons to Exercise & Deal
by: cp on Oct 2, 2008 12:34 AM | Filed under: Journals

The Mets have to exercise Carlos Delgado’s option. Failing to do so costs $4m and lets a 35 HR guy walk away with no return. But after they exercise his option should they keep him or deal him?

Provided the club is willing to go “all in” for Mark Texeira I think it makes a lot of sense. Here are four reasons why:

• Insurance against decline/get younger. Next season is certainly Delgado’s last with the Mets – will it coincide with a severe decline or worse yet an Alou or Duque like serious injury? We’ll know for sure in 12 months but moving him while signing Tex eliminates the risk and makes the club younger. The 28 year old Texeira will be younger in 2015 than Delgado will be in April. A true Delgado decline probably means no more than an 85 win season. Those are some high stakes . . .

• Save the kids! The Mets have several holes but few trading chips – and no they can’t afford to fill all their needs via free agency. So deal one/some of Niese, Fernando & Murphy or keep them and deal Delgado? Delgado’s $12m is reasonable for a guy coming off a near-MVP season & he’s only a one-year commitment . Would the win-now Angels who don’t like long-term deals want him? Would the Blue Jays welcome him back? Could he yield a young quality set-up man & a solid RH hitting OFer? If the choice is Tex+Setup+RH OFer & keep F!/Niese/Murphy OR Delgado+Setup+RH OFer but lose 2 of of F!/Niese/Murphy isn’t that an easy choice?

• Texeira balances the lineup. The club is too left-handed. Even if Omar completely strikes out in the RH OFer market, Texeira makes the club more balanced. Tex ops vs. lefties was .901 vs Delgado’s .789. Tex ops vs. righties .993 vs Delgado’s .912.

• Texeira improves the defense. The 2009 Mets 2Ber will probably be defensively challenged i.e. Castillo/Murphy/Easley. Limited range at 2B makes a strong glove at 1B essential. Delgado will only get slower, Pelf is a ground baller & if you replace Ollie with Derek Lowe you’re adding 4 ground ball outs a game. Tex might even save DW a couple of throwing errors. Plus I just love watching good defense.

Obviously, this scenario only works if you go all out for Texeira. I’m guessing he gets $18m/per or $6m more than Delgado. Is there a proven, in his prime $6m player on the FA market that improves our D at a key position, balances the meat of the order & makes us 8 years younger?

The Mets need KRod far, far more than Texeira. I’ll gladly take my chances of another year of Delgado.

The rebuilding of the bullpen starts with a bonafide closer and the Mets have no internal options.

It’s almost too good to be true that KRod becomes available after the Mets lose Wagner. Minaya must pounce!

The problem with this scenario is won’t other teams know the risks associated with Delgado too?

My understanding is the problem isnt keeping Delgado next season…..he’ll produce. The problem becomes that what do you do AFTER next yr. It’s like your getting another year of c-del at the cost of obtaining a mark texeria.

Sure - I don’t mean to suggest his trade value is the same as if he were 28 and had just posted his 08 numbers but he still ought to have some meaningful value. I’m thinking an established 7th or 8th inning reliever and a RH OFer. Those would be two fewer slots to fill on the FA market + the benefits of better defense, less exposure to LH pitching & getting younger that a Texeira signing would bring.

Another possibility is to sign Adam Dunn, start him in LF for next season, then move Dunn to 1B after 2009, making room for a corner OF spot(s) for F-Mart in 2010.
