Daily Mets Recap: September 19th, 2008
The Game
The Mets beat the Washington Nationals last night by a score of 7-2, taking two of the four games in this series in Washington. The Mets jumped on opposing starter Tim Redding from the very beginning, and Johan Santana protected the lead his team had given him for his 14th win of the season.
It was clear from the first inning that Tim Redding didn’t have very good stuff on Thursday. His fastball was flat and had alot of plate, which the Mets would punish him for. In the first inning, the Mets would grab the lead when Daniel Murphy singled (He’d wind up at third on a Lastings Milledge error) in Jose Reyes. Though neither David Wright, Carlos Delgado, or Carlos Beltran would be able to plate Murphy in that first inning, the Mets’ consistent hitting throughout the night would take out the sour taste in the mouths of Mets fans. In the 2nd inning, Brian Schneider would crush a solo homer to put the Mets up 2-0. Then, after a Johan Santana double, Jose Reyes would single in the 2nd run of the inning. But our Mets were just getting started! The Mets scored two more runs in the third after a Carlos Beltran triple and a Ryan Church single. With new pitcher Jason Bergmann in the game, the Mets would score two more runs in the 4th and 5th innings on another Brian Schneider home run, and a second Ran Church RBI single. All in all, the Mets were simply locked in on Thursday; it was very satisfying to watch.
Of course, with so much run support, all Johan Santana had to do was what he normally does; throw seven excellent innings of baseball and keep the Mets in the game. In his even innings of work, Johan would allow eight hits, walk one and strike out eight. Though appearing a tad shaky, the Mets bullpen did fine after Santana left the game. Joe Smith, Scott Schoeneweis and Pedro Feliciano combined for two innings of one run baseball to close the deal.
It was good to see the Mets hang on to a laugher, and win it with ease. With the Milwaukee Brewers losing yesterday, the Mets now find themselves with a 1.5 game lead in the NL Wildcard. Perhaps its not what Mets fans envisioned entering the season, but the playoffs are the playoffs.
Tonight Oliver Perez and the Mets will take on Jo-Jo Reyes and the Atlanta Braves in Turner Field.
