Site Update
I just wanted to keep everyone in the loop with what’s going on. Most of you have noticed that comment posting has been terribly slow over the past week or so, and I spent the last five-plus hours trying everything imaginable to figure out what the problem was. I tried:
* Optimizing the database
* Defragmenting the database
* Purging old open thread/game chatter comments
* Restarting database/server processes
* Disabling comment-related plugins
None of those things provided more than marginal improvement to the comment posting time. Finally, I stumbled onto the problem. Without getting too specific, WordPress (our content platform) does some funky things whenever someone posts a comment, and some of those things don’t scale particularly well when you have hundreds of thousands of comments, as we have.
Good News
The good news is that I was able to optimize/circumvent some of those extraneous processes and the comment posting speed should see considerable improvement now. If you run into other problems please let me know via eric-at-metsgeek-dot-com.
More!
In other good news for those of you who attended Geek Day in Pittsburgh this year, we finally have t-shirts available. We wanted to have them ready before the big day, but the prototype order was delayed and then subsequently lost by UPS. It’s all good, though. We figured that people buy concert t-shirts on their way out of the show, so this will be the same thing.
There are four types of shirts available, all with the same design in navy blue: standard men’s tee, women’s tee, hemp tee and muscle tee. The front features the MetsGeek logo and ‘Geek Day 2008′. The back features the following text:
PNC Park
Pittsburgh, PA
August 16, 2008
metsgeek.com
The prices at the MetsGeek store are cost. What you see is what Spreadshirt charges for the shirt. We won’t make a penny on these, but wanted to make them available to anyone who schlepped out to Pittsburgh for the best damned Geek Day yet. Even if you didn’t make it out to Geek Day, it’s still a pretty nice shirt. I personally have the standard men’s tee and it’s a heavy Fruit Of The Loom shirt. Good quality and it looks sharp.
Anyone who buys a shirt, just leave a note here so we have some idea of the interest. Thanks again for your patience and your continued support of this site and its community.

Eric Simon has far too much time on his hands. He sleeps upside-down, keeps people as pets, and can be found on the internets at
Amazin' Avenue or bothered directly at
eric@metsgeek.com.
that was a long 20 minutes.
If I spent any time updating the maintenance screen it would’ve been even longer.
Stephen Drew hit for the cycle earlier today and wow it looks like Adrian Beltre just did it too.
Two cycles in one day. I wonder when…oh, Elias!
lol
;)
posting time is back to normal.
btw, anyway to tell who are the top ten posters?
i was surprised by the number you posted in the last thread. was that 750,000 since the site went live.
First off, Eric Simon is a genius man. Give him a standing ovation, folks.
Not anymore. We did purge a lot of old comments so it’s not readily accessible.
Yes, since the site went live.
If only you could figure out how many handles I’ve used. ;)
Picked up a metsgeek shirt! Keep rockin
Eric, thanks for your work.
oh yes, clap clap clap clap.
and i picked up a non hemp tee, even though i didnt go.
Thanks, Eric! This was a huge amount of work. As usual, we get to enjoy the benefits without putting in any of the effort.
I’m greatly relieved to have the Geek in fighting trim and very appreciative.
Before pruning we had 788,565 comments since the site went live at the end of March, 2005. I’ll try to run a top-10 list if I can.
Awesome stuff, Eric. Thanks for your hard work with the site. It’s all worth it from this point of view.
You were there in spirit, dude. Also, I still have your replacement ticket after my dumbass move of forgetting my tickets and then having to reprint an entire block on them so I could get in.
Eric, you are my hero! Satnding O! I will definitely be buying a Tshirt. Thank you so much for everything!
OMG and my comment posted instantly…..woot! woot!
