So….I hope Jerry learns from this experience and NEVER does what he did to Pelfrey as long as it comes down to Heilman having to pitch the 9th. It isn’t worth the 2 damned outs.

In Heilman’s defense, ball4 to Ramirez was a strike all night.

Heilman didn’t load the bases intentionally with 2 walks, which was an idiotic move. It simply adds the walk as an instrument with which to beat you.

However, for the prosecution, none of the balls Heilman threw to Willingham were even close. That’s inexcusable.

  33. Comment posted by Ramon on August 30, 2008 at 10:55 pm (#824796)

Tough game to lose. It felt as if the pen worked extra hard to give it away. Plus the offense was disgraceful after the 3rd.

  34. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 30, 2008 at 10:57 pm (#824797)

    Holy crap…

Just looked at the box score.

Just DFA Heilman. There is nothing good that can be had from him and maybe he could mess up against the Mets for someone else some day.

This is the only way Aaron Heilman could benefit the Mets.

Just… go away. Don’t need to go home but you can’t stay here.

  35. Comment posted by Doc believes! on August 30, 2008 at 10:58 pm (#824799)

    Mighty Joe,
Once you end up with Hanley on third with one out with his speed walking the current batter was a no brainer. I might have pitched to Jacobs though as slow as he is but Willingham is slow and right handed so I can’t kill the move.

  36. Comment posted by Ramon on August 30, 2008 at 10:59 pm (#824798)

LOL Heilman is a mess. I still want him to start for us next season.

  37. Comment posted by MightyJoeOrsulak on August 30, 2008 at 11:00 pm (#824800)

Helman, throughout his career, has been a plus set-up man. The Mets will not win anything without him performing at least decently.

  38. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 30, 2008 at 11:03 pm (#824801)

I dunno, I think if he just sits in the bullpen and sulks like a goddamned baby, we could dig up someone who could outperform a 5.25 ERA.

    Y’know. Just blueskyin’ here.

  39. Comment posted by Doc believes! on August 30, 2008 at 11:03 pm (#824802)

I wouldn’t DFA Heilman, but the Mets can’t run him out there in any leverage spots anymore.

  40. Comment posted by Athena on August 30, 2008 at 11:06 pm (#824803)

I’m sure that you are frustrated, LFM, and I know that you like to speak in hyperbole. But that is absurd. Even for you. He’s not getting it done, but it is irrational to toss him away for nothing. What good would that do?

Mets 498 runs scored in innings 1-6 most in mlb
    .279 ba 3rd in nl

167 runs scored in innings 7+ 14th out of 16
    .242 ba 13th out of 16

    24 blown saves 3rd most in ml’s
11 since all star game most in ml’s …

these numbers are to hard to overcome they may win the division but …..

  44. Comment posted by Bob Loblaw on August 30, 2008 at 11:09 pm (#824806)

I guess that 3 inning stint the other night was a low leverage spot.

  46. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 30, 2008 at 11:12 pm (#824807)

    He’s broken. He’s damaged goods.

If you keep him on this team, they will feel obligated to use him.

To use him is to give up on the playoffs.

    Ergo, I ain’t exaggerating.

Sounds extreme, sure, but less extreme than allowing management the possibility of using him in an important situation ever again.

  47. Comment posted by Doc believes! on August 30, 2008 at 11:15 pm (#824809)

    Bob,
Fair point, but he’s so damn unreliable and he’s been bad a lot this year. Personally I think he’s hiding some sort of injury or is worn out from his overuse over the last few years, but I rather someone else in these big spots with soon to be expanded pen.

  48. Comment posted by Athena on August 30, 2008 at 11:15 pm (#824810)

We don’t really have anyone else. I would be thrilled if we could put Heilman on ice for the rest of the season and let him work out his issues in low leverage situations. If the bull pen was stronger, I imagine that’s what we would do. But we don’t have enough reliable guys in the pen to sit Aaron in all the high leverage situations.

What happened to the new Reyes?

An impromptu police escort Friday ensured that Alex Rodriguez did not miss the first pitch of the Yankees’ game with Toronto, something the third baseman worried about as he sat on a clogged Cross Bronx Expressway in Labor Day weekend traffic.

Rodriguez flagged down a nearby police officer, who recognized A-Rod and told the superstar, “Get in.”

The officer drove Rodriguez to the Stadium himself, and turned on his siren to clear the way, said Jason Zillo, the Yankees’ director of media relations. The officer also phoned friends and family along the way and A-Rod spoke to them as they drove. A friend of Rodriguez’ remained with A-Rod’s car.

    What a douche.

As bad as the lolpen admittedly is, it really doesn’t help that the umpires seem to have caught on to the nature of the lolpen and doesn’t given them any of the close calls. Jacobs could have been rung up twice before the homer but didn’t. Same with Hanley.

And this is not to blame the umpires. They’re human like anybody else. They see a bad bullpen, they expect bad things. If the pen was routinely doing their job, the umpires would expect strikes. As it is, they seem to expect balls.
