Aside from that obvious need, there is also the issue of winning the last series in the schedule in a tight divisional race.

Rosenthal wrote this a day or two ago……

If the Rockies want to trade closer Brian Fuentes, it will not be possible for them to do it before the September 1 deadline for setting postseason rosters.

The Rockies placed Fuentes on waivers Monday, but the pitcher went on the bereavement list on Tuesday, effectively canceling the waivers. Fuentes is not eligible to come off the bereavement list until Friday. If the Rockies again placed him on waivers then, he would not clear until after the Sunday deadline for postseason rosters.

Players who go on the bereavement list are similar to those who go on the disabled list, and cannot go through the waiver process. The minimum stay on the bereavement list is three days.

The Rockies were unlikely to trade Fuentes anyway for two reasons. First, they would have asked for a high price from any team that claimed him. Second, Colorado is only six games out in the NL West thanks to the recent struggles of the Diamondbacks and Dodgers.

    from BP hit list

The Mets’ dogfight for first place in the NL East continues. Carlos Delgado’s two-homer, three-RBI night helps the team erase the sting of a squandered 7-0 lead the night before. It’s Delgado’s second two-homer game in three days and his fifth of the season, tying Grady Sizemore for the MLB high; he’s hitting .301/.394/.622 since the All-Star break. In less encouraging news, as the team faces the possibility of John Maine being shelved for the year, tough-talking Jerry Manuel invokes the chilling memory of Dallas Green in discussing Mike Pelfrey’s workload: “In the course of winning a championship, there will be some things that will be some damage to some folk. That’s the sacrifice. That’s the cost. That’s the price of a championship.”

BTW. The topic I am most interested in catching up on:

What is the general opinion here about Big Pelf’s health status and the number of innings the team should allow for him to pitch this year? Are the Mets overusing him or are his easier innings this year allowing him to glide towards more IP than the sabermetrical book would normally allow?

Ramon, we’ve debated that ad nauseum. Many of us are afraid of his overuse. I suggest ( when you have some time) go back and read some of the threads from a few days ago to see where we all stand.

    Will Carroll:

    John Maine (30 DXL/$1.1 million)
Maine did everything he could to pitch through the pain in his shoulder, but despite some desperate efforts, he simply couldn’t do it and still remain effective. He had a cortisone shot to try to calm down the area affected by the spur, not picking up a ball until he made his start, but his control suffered because of it. The Mets aren’t counting him out completely, but putting him on the DL at this stage of the season shows just how bad things have become. If the Mets hope to play in October, keeping Pedro Martinez healthy becomes even more key now, especially since Mike Pelfrey is nearing the Verducci Effect.

Speaking of the Verducci Effect, who’s headed to that threshold? The Baseball Prospectus stats crew pulled the starting pitchers who have crossed or are on pace for that level:

    2008 2007 Age08 Pitcher
    —– —– —– ——-

I read your article Simons on the subject. I agree with your contention that it does not necessarily boil down to the number of pitches he throws but how those pitches are distributed per inning. 108 pitches over 8-9 IP don’t wear down on a pitcher like they do over 5 IP of work.

All you can reasonably hope for as far as I’m concerned is that Pelfrey does not pitch innings in games that are blowouts. Though what constitutes a blowout - given the lolpen - is up for debate. 7 runs is apparently not a blowout.

The sad thing is that I don’t know what the Mets can do now to conserve Pelfrey? They are uberreliant on him, Santana and Perez with Maine out and Pedro a wildcard. If the pen were stronger it would also help, but it isn’t all that great either.

    163 = Pelf Current IP

182.67 is the danger line per the +30IP thingy

    what does have 6 more starts? say even 6 per = 36 = 199 IP b4 october

AND…some folks say minor league innings do NOT convert on a 1:1 basis for this whole thing, cuz they are easier innings than major league ones. good for us pelfrey struggled in the minors in 2007, not even kidding, that may help.

Also, to state and restate the obvious, the Verducci effect isn’t necessarily to be taken as gospel at the unit of the individual player. Pelfrey has every chance to hold up well IMO. He’s strong like bull, has an “easy” delivery, doesn’t throw a lot of breaking balls.

I think he’ll be fine, and we don’t really have any other choice but that to put him out there as of now. Maybe the Philth will lose 12 in a row and things will change, but as of now, I think ppl can wring their hands and pretend like they know better, but there really isn’t a viable option but to give him the ball.

And people can wring their hands and say he wil be fine. We don’t know that either.

There are other options, it’s just that they put this year’s post season at risk. I don’t think anyone has any illusions as to what it could mean for this season to rest Pelfrey. The question is whether or not the next month is more important than his next season or two.

    I was surprised too.

worse part is i cant remember where i saw it. it wasnt on BP, someone wrote an article about Pelf and contacted him on his own and asked him Q’s, one of them said does it matter how big a boy he is, and Carroll said its not something he even considers.

  73. Comment posted by Dep on August 29, 2008 at 6:28 pm (#823263)

ok i found it….Carroll said “its not something he currently considers” so my bad on misquoting him a little, but am i misinterpreting what he says here or what?

    from new delcos:

We all know about Mike Pelfrey and his ever-increasing innings count. The 24-year-old has already entered the deep end. Every inning he throws extends his career high IP. Theoretically, it also brings him closer to suffering potential arm troubles, at least if you believe in research done the last few years by the stat guys.

bigpelf.jpg This week I asked Pelfrey what he knows about that research this week and he had a couple reasons for why he’s may not be in the same danger as you think. Here’s the story.
I also contacted Baseball Prospectus for the story, and BP’s Will Carroll helped outline what history has told us about young pitchers’ risk. Carroll said pitchers 25-and-under are at risk if they throw 30 or more innings than they did the year before. Here are the variables: 1. Age, 2. minor-league IP aren’t as stressful as those in the majors.

I asked about size (Pelfrey being a big boy at 6-foot-7) and he said it wasn’t currently a consideration. I also asked if Pelfrey would be safer if the Mets dialed back his IP late in the season but he still exceeded his IP limit in October…Carroll said he’d still be at risk.

What didn’t make the story but is certainly interesting was Pelfrey’s thoughts on this year compared to his final year at Wichita State. As a junior he made 19 starts and threw 139.2 IP — doing so in basically three monhs of work. He started on three-days rest. He threw pitch-counts that were barely considered.

“In college I threw about 145 innings in three months,” Pelfrey said. “The workload there was a lot more. There were times I came back on three days rest.”

If you remember, Pelfrey didn’t pitch in pro ball that year after he was drafted. The Mets were rumored to be pleased, out of fear he’d hurt his arm on the heels of a busy college season.

Clearly, the guy’s been busy before.

There are examples of injuries who derailed guys’ careers (Prior and Wood, Fausto Carmona this year), but there are others who were fine. One is comparable to Pelfrey — Justin Verlander, the Tigers’ 6-foot-7 RHP. The 23-year-old (at the time) Verlander tossed 186 IP in 2006, a 56-inning increase from the year before. How’d he make out in ‘07? 18-6, 3.66 ERA, good for fifth in the AL Cy Young voting.

  74. Comment posted by Lister on August 29, 2008 at 6:28 pm (#823264)

The question is whether or not the next month is more important than his next season or two.

I have to disagree. No. That’s NOT the question. If there were a guarantee that Pelfrey would tank, get injured, be ruined in future seasons because of his throwing 25-45 innings more than the “Verducci Effect” prescribes, then that would be a hugely different situation. To throw him every 5th day from here on out is not to say this year is more important than next. There is no guarantee of his future performance based on the next month plus.

Honestly, as things stand today, I myself can’t come up with a good argument for shutting him down completely at 182IP or whatever. It’s not ideal that he go to 200 or beyond, but it’s not his death sentence either. He has shown no signs of wearing down either over the season or w/in individual starts.

    1. Age, 2. minor-league IP aren’t as stressful as those in the majors.

build/frame/height any of that ain’t listed

I asked about size (Pelfrey being a big boy at 6-foot-7) and he said it wasn’t currently a consideration.

Honestly, it’s unclear what this means, but my best, simplest interpretation is that he means they haven’t factored “size” into the studies (yet). So, basically, it’s a gray area. I don’t think you can take it to mean that size has no effect on how a pitcher holds up.

but it also means then you cant say his build will help cuz no one knows.

Of course there is no guarantee he will get injured, Lister. That’s not the point.

That’s like saying that someone shouldn’t worry about potentially getting lung cancer if they smoke because there is no guarantee that they get it.

Sure, some people will smoke their whole lives and not get lung cancer, but that doesn’t mean that anyone who smokes does not increase their chances of getting lung cancer tenfold.

So you either do 2 things: you don’t smoke and give yourself the best chance not to get lung cancer, or you smoke and roll the dice. And then fate or karma or a mean God take over, whatever.

Honestly, as things stand today, I myself can’t come up with a good argument for shutting him down completely at 182IP or whatever. It’s not ideal that he go to 200 or beyond, but it’s not his death sentence either. He has shown no signs of wearing down either over the season or w/in individual starts.

I hear you, Lister. And I hope you’re right. In fact, you may well be.

It’s just a question of how you feel about risk/reward. I worry that they are taking a risk to the downside that exceeds the benefits for this season. That’s not to say that they’ve guaranteed an injury, just that they’ve materially increased the odds. I would have preferred to play it more carefully. (But no one is paying me to manage!)

But this could still prove to be worry about nothing. That’s the nature of risk management. Sometimes you pay dearly for protection that you will never need. Sometimes a hurricane hits.

I’ve got to run. You obviously have points. I’m concerned too. But I think to some extent the concern has been overplayed, particularly here. That’s all. We’ll see I guess.

yay, i’m done! heading home! c u soon! PHILET THOSE PHISH!!!!!!

    On the build argument:

here’s my main problem with it, if the argument is that a larger frame can handle increased torque (or whatever)…and maybe i dont understand the argument……but cant the larger arms on that larger frame cause MORE torque relative to a smaller type pitcher???

we will talk more soon. ciao!
