When I first turned on the tube the SNY announcers were saying that if the Phillies miss the playoffs it will be because of decisions like he made here in the 8th inning.

  12. Comment posted by BOB A. BOOEY on August 27, 2008 at 10:10 pm (#821073)

I have the phils announcers. Romero is not really available tonight according to them and I guess seanez vs Delgado was a matchup the guys on sny thought should of never happened

  53. Comment posted by Hiro Protagonist on August 27, 2008 at 10:28 pm (#821200)

Barring a freak injury, Delgado’s option has to be picked up. He’s been the most clutch hitter since the ASB, and how can you not bring back a guy who will lead the team in dingers and eventually RBI?

After that April, 35+ homers and 110+ rbi was almost unfathomable. And those should happen for him.

Hold on. I just checked the box score. They’re giving the blown save to Saenz. That’s criminal.

  58. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 27, 2008 at 10:30 pm (#821209)

    Books!

Though to be fair to the bullpen, yesterday’s game was a lot less about how bad the ‘pen is and a lot more about how little is really left in Pedro’s tank.

I mean, three runs out of a bullpen over… eight innings? You’d like better but it isn’t AWFUL awful either.

Five runs in five innings is completely unacceptable, even in Philly.

  59. Comment posted by Simons on August 27, 2008 at 10:30 pm (#821211)

Almost makes you think the Mets have heart. I thought the Phillies had heart? The Phillies had heart last night. I guess Jerry sneaked into their dugout this afternoon, stole their heart, and performed transplant surgery to give the Mets heart. Good job Jerry!

  60. Comment posted by Lister on August 27, 2008 at 10:31 pm (#821213)

We kind of have the Phillies number this year. Or at least we got more digits of their number than they have of ours. Nah mean?

    Bedtime. ZZZZZZZZZZZ.

  61. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on August 27, 2008 at 10:31 pm (#821212)

You think there will be front page story about how the Mets jumped on the Phillies bullpen and stole one away from them? Didn’t think so.

  62. Comment posted by WilmerHasArrived on August 27, 2008 at 10:31 pm (#821215)

Phuck you Phillies! See even after that mindnumbing loss yesterday, we are exactly where we were 2 days ago: ahead 1/2 game. This team has shown great bounceback abillity after bonecrushers.

  63. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 27, 2008 at 10:33 pm (#821218)

Another year on that body and April May becomes April May June July and… this team can’t take that from him.

Delgado has been a pleasant surprise for the middle of this season, no doubt, but you can’t pick up that option. You just CAN’T.

You can’t just keep rolling the dice on age and expect to never come up craps.. SEE: The Yankees.

  64. Comment posted by TLC on August 27, 2008 at 10:33 pm (#821219)

Saenez blew the save. Lidge didnt enter until it was 3-3

  65. Comment posted by WilmerHasArrived on August 27, 2008 at 10:34 pm (#821221)

If we pick up Delgado’s option and he bombs completely, will we still get the two draft picks. I heard that they look at the past two years and see if their good enough. Does this year make up for that?

  66. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on August 27, 2008 at 10:35 pm (#821224)

According to the play by play, they came when Lidge was on. Doesn’t really matter, I guess, but Lidge definitely deserves that BS.

  67. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 27, 2008 at 10:38 pm (#821231)

Draft picks are lottery tickets, especially for a team that won’t go over slot. Nice to have but longshots that aren’t worth factoring into a decision.

Back up a truck full of money up to Mark Tashanaynay’s house before we even think about Delgado.

And then take long long looks at Murphy Evans and Carp.

That’s a lot of money to pay for a guy who didn’t show up until June.

  68. Comment posted by TLC on August 27, 2008 at 10:38 pm (#821232)

Delgado hit his hr off of Seanez in the 8th. Beltran got on and then they put lidge in

I understand the fear about taking Delgado’s option but, honestly, what other choices are there? And don’t say Teixeira because we’ll never outbid the Yankees or the Angels.

  70. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on August 27, 2008 at 10:41 pm (#821243)

There really isn’t another option…unless Omar has some unforeseen trade up his sleeve. Pick up the option, use Evans as his caddy and against tough lefties, and use the excess funds to to re-sign Ollie P.

Phillies Rally to Beat Mets and Reclaim 1st Place
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

    Filed at 10:32 p.m. ET

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Daniel Murphy hit a tiebreaking double after Carlos Delgado’s second solo homer had tied the game in the eighth and the New York Mets beat Philadelphia 6-3 on Wednesday night to reclaim first place in the NL East.

Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer and Jayson Werth homered for the Phillies, who fell a half-game behind the Mets in the division.

One night after New York’s bullpen blew a ninth-inning lead for the 10th time this season, the Phillies couldn’t protect a one-run lead in the eighth.

With two outs, Delgado tied it at 3 with a homer to left off Rudy Seanez (5-4). After Carlos Beltran reached on an infield single. Brad Lidge, who is 31-for-31 in save chances, came in and intentionally walked Ryan Church after Beltran stole second.

Murphy ripped a double to right to score Beltran for a 4-3 lead. Brian Schneider followed with a bloop single down the left-field line that drove in two runs.

Brian Stokes (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for his first win with the Mets.

  81. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on August 27, 2008 at 10:49 pm (#821280)

Besides, Delgado isn’t that expensive anyway. He’s $8 million for what appears to be a league average 1st baseman. I’d love to see what Evans can do but, honestly, he needs some more time in AAA.

  82. Comment posted by Hiro Protagonist on August 27, 2008 at 10:49 pm (#821285)

He deserves more votes than Wright, at least.

  83. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on August 27, 2008 at 10:50 pm (#821287)

Well, let’s wait and see with September. I think we’ll see some good things from Wright in the next couple of weeks.

  84. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 27, 2008 at 10:52 pm (#821297)

    Sure.

    You develop players.

I’m not AGAINST drafting players… but you get draft picks every year. You get LOTS of draft picks every year.

Two more draft picks that you may or may not do anything and might get traded to Washington for a bag of magic beans… the marginal utility against throwing eight million more dollars at a Delgado who refuses to sit even when he’s slumping terribly…

You gotta look at the cost-risk analysis there.

If you buy fifty dollars in lottery tickets and fifty-two dollars in lottery tickets… and you had to chop off a finger to get those two extra bucks…

The finger’s probably worth more to you.

Draft WELL, develop WELL, don’t yoyo guys and don’t toss them out for not immediately succeeding… and a few extra spins of the wheel don’t know much.

The vast majority of your draft picks any draft won’t do anything at the major league level anyway.

  85. Comment posted by jas on August 27, 2008 at 10:53 pm (#821300)

I’d love to see what Evans can do but, honestly, he needs some more time in AAA.

I’d have no problem letting him be the defensive replacement for Delgado, and get at bats against lefties, since he rakes against them. But, for how relatively how little Delgado is going to cost, and the need to bring back Ollie and add to the bullpen, I don’t see why he shouldn’t be brought back.

  86. Comment posted by Hiro Protagonist on August 27, 2008 at 10:53 pm (#821301)

Unless this game leads the 11 PM SportsCenter, there is a legitimate conspiracy theory here.

  87. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 27, 2008 at 10:53 pm (#821303)

… a few more spins don’t MEAN much, rather.

  88. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 27, 2008 at 10:55 pm (#821310)

The baseball portion of Sportscentre will be devoted to figuring out a rationale to not count the Yankees out of the playoff picture.

Of course, 85% of it will be about ridiculously lame college football minutae but… y’know… here we are, that’s the culture.
