I went out to a wine bar in my neighborhood last week. Usually the bar is very quiet and I can go by myself and chat with the bartender.
Last Friday, it was very crowded and a very strange guy sat next to me. His opening line was to explain to me that he had brought a little bottle of whiskey with him and ounce for ounce, it was much much cheaper than ordering drinks at a bar. Wasn’t that clever? Sheesh.

heyyy, nathan fillion has a new show. good for him. too bad it will last 2 weeks just like almost every show he’s on
ABC just announced it’s taking three drama pilots to series:
1) “Veronica Mars” mastermind Rob Thomas’ remake of his ‘90s hourlong “Cupid,” this time starring Bobby Cannavale (“Snakes on a Plane”) and Sarah Paulson (“Studio 60”) in the Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall roles.
2) “Castle,” a Nathan Fillion vehicle, from writer Andrew W. Marlowe (“Air Force One,” “End of Days,” “Hollow Man”) about a novelist who helps the New York police.
3) The ensemble police drama “The Unusuals,” from writer-producers Noah Hawley (”Bones”) and Peter Tolan (”The Larry Sanders Show,” “Rescue Me”). The pilot starred Amber Tamblyn (“Joan of Arcadia”), Harold Perrineau (“Lost”), Adam Goldberg (“Zodiac,” “Entourage”) and Terry Kinney (“Canterbury’s Law”).
The network is also taking to series two sitcoms:
1) The corporate-ladder saga “Better Off Ted,” from writer-producer Victor Fresco (”Andy Richter Controls The Universe”), starring Jay Harrington (”The Inside”).
2) The career-girl comedy “Single With Parents,” from writer-producer Kristin Newman (”How I Met Your Mother”), starring Alyssa Milano (”Charmed”).

According to FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, the Rockies have placed both Brian Fuentes and Willy Taveras on revocable waivers.
Fuentes has the better chance to be traded, and the Dodgers are the contender with the first crack at him. However, it’s possible that a non-contender could claim him anyway. He’s owed just $1 million over the rest of this season and he’s nearly certain to bring back two draft picks as a free agent this winter, so why shouldn’t the Padres put in a claim? Taveras, who is under control through 2010, is more likely to be dealt this winter.

It’s an online mini-series. It stars Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion.
During the WGA strike Joss Whedon started writing a three part musical series for the internet. Each of the three episodes will be approximately ten minutes each.
Co-writers for the internet feature are Joss’ brothers Zack and Jed and Jed’s Fiancé Maurissa Tancharoen . The writing and shooting have been completed and the series is now in post-production.
“It’s the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to.” says Whedon.
“Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” will star Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer, Felicia Day as Penny and a cast of dozens.”
It’s very silly. But you don’t mind silly. The musical part might be a problem, though.

Why do the Dodgers need a closer? Isn’t a team required to be able to score runs and have a lead to protect before having need of a closer?

the bar/club scene was my life back then outside of work, i could have tried to find some other NYC stuff to immerse myself in, but i knew i had a fairly serious drinking problem and i would get pulled back in as soon as my friends called me to go out.

I was literally going out almost every sunday, monday, thursday, friday, saturday night every single week
I was stupid and undisciplined and didnt realize what i was getting myself into and after doing it for a few years, there was really no escape in sight.
throw in a little bit of drug use and a whole lot of drinking, it can add up to a big problem.

I didn’t tell ya all I tried out for a play the other night. Have no idea what it was called. I didn’t get the part. It was only two lines.
I didn’t get the part because I was too tall. I was to play opposite of someone who was 5′2
But that is an awesome idea, Chris. Keep trying out. Can you sing?
I like him a lot too, i’ll watch most anything with him in. Slither is great if you haven’t seen it
nope, never saw Dr. Horrible
I can sing somewhat.
LMAO!!! classic post chris. the worthless at the end was PRICELESS :)
By the way, Dep, you and I are going to have to have a little chat about this. That’s insane! And almost certainly a relatively low-yield strategy.
I WANNA GO HOME. come on bosses LEAVE
LOL. well i dont do that stuff anymore. Dep went out 4-5 nights out of 7 for almost 8 years or so in good ole NYC. you learn the game well and try lots of things over time.
i’ve been slapped and had drinks thrown on me many many times.
you live n learn.
the key is not to care about rejection. if you get yourself to a point where you just dont care, you are infallible
i hear that. when you go out a lot in NYC, you collect some really great stories. but i’m still learning, apparently…I’m totally not going out anymore. Food shopping 7 days a week!
It’s an online mini-series. It stars Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion.
It’s very silly. But you don’t mind silly. The musical part might be a problem, though.
ahhhhhhhhhhh, i did hear about that! Doogie plays the bad guy. that’s right
I had no idea Fillion was in that. i may have to check it out!
thanks! :)
one ought never smell of desperation. it’s like flecking holy water on the skin of sinners.
I’ve had drinks thrown on me and also been slapped. I also never carried a screw :(
LOL. carrying the screw is the easy part, ending your line with “….wanna screw?” is the tough part! ;)
i don’t wear that cologne!
I’m in awe. Or shock. Can’t distinguish. ;-)
Although I think you are absolutely right about not caring about rejection. I never mastered that one. Although, I have found that it is relatively easy to pull off with a sufficient amount of alcohol!
3am-4am = desperation hour
I still don’t know what I did to get slapped *I was a bit tipsy and had a contact high*. I was told about it the next day
LOL Athena.
its tough.
back in the day i was ridiculous. I was also a major a**hole, so it’s a dangerous line. you often don’t care about too much if you don’t care about rejection.
Confidence/Cockiness is such a fine line to walk. its very hard.
Did u guys and gals see the CJ Nitkowski article by Jeff Pearlman
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=pearlman/080825
very good
there was some talk re; trading heilman and/or show for fuentes. now the guy is on wavers
Why do the Dodgers need a closer? Isn’t a team required to be able to score runs and have a lead to protect before having need of a closer?
that never happened, dep. i don’t believe you!
very interesting point. never thought of it like that
It’s revocable waivers custer. Whole different story.
You are an interesting man. :-)
Custer, for the first time ever, I would be willing to trade Heilman. Not because I think he is finished, but because I’m wondering if a change of scenery might help him. Look what Ayala appears to be doing (albeit for a very small sample.)
hahaha, you have no idea. i wasn’t even that into baseball back in the day when i was going out all the time! :o
I dated shallow, inconsiderate girls and was fine with it cuz i was just as bad, yada yada
One day i realized I was pretty miserable and it had lot to do with my behavior, so I took drastic steps to try n change the type of person i was.
it was tough, but i try to do right by ppl now and all that. i’m happier for it.
ha! you’re quite interesting yo’self :)
custer, hate to say it, but I agree with Athena. I’d trade him as well. Sorry!
Strahan staying retired. He made the right decision, imo.
LOL! don’t go blaming ze pot! ;)
dep, you are a better person for it today - it’s great that you were able to realize it and change, though. Not an easy thing to do!
i agree with this. i have posted the same thing here
That’s pretty insightful.
So are we! The loss to shallow, inconsiderate girls is our gain! ;-)
Yeah, I know. I remember. I didn’t agree with you, though. But now I would consider it.
Anyone can get laid at last call at a bar.
Anyone.
Not that I would know at this point in my boring married life. :)
thanks, you are very sweet.
it was really hard. I took an extended leave from work, packed up, left NYC for almost a year. spent some time with my folks, then went backpacking for 6 months in canada!
it really helped clear my head. i wouldnt have been able to do it if i didnt leave NYC.
I also almost went to rehab for a serious alcohol problem back then, but i decided not to. I started smoking and stopped drinking so much!
I’m heading out guys. See you in about an hour.
HA. thanks :) you are very sweet too!
I still have my vengeance on shallow, inconsiderate girls from time2time, i just don’t “date” them anymore ;)
Thread open
i’m sure it was beyond tough, dep. interesting, i have had a few friends in situations that sound pretty similar (on the surface at least) and every one of them has at some point said “I need to leave NY to fix this” - and pretty much all of them did
hahaha!
I should probably disapprove of this post, but it is too perfect. See ya, sweetie!
Live and learn. In all of our little chats, I never knew that dep, about leaving NY. Good for you for getting it together. Even better that you realized you had a problem and needed to get it together. Take a bow!
LOL!
yaaaaa, you have to break your routine.
the bar/club scene was my life back then outside of work, i could have tried to find some other NYC stuff to immerse myself in, but i knew i had a fairly serious drinking problem and i would get pulled back in as soon as my friends called me to go out.
so i just left.
I didnt even tell some of my friends, they were a huge part of the problem. I’m still not friends with many of them to this day. Realized they weren’t really my friends once i was able to step away from it all
yeaaaaaa, i dont know why that never came up b4. who knows
thank you.
now i just have a pot problem! eek! at least its much more manageable than a drinking problem, that s**t will engulf your life
Bye Athena! mwah!
that makes total sense, dep. I get it, it just makes me sad that a city that has so much to offer can be the downfall for so many people.
i mean, that sounds naive, which i’m not, and i get it. It just is the complete opposite of my feelings toward NY, i guess
i had no self control. i don’t blame NYC at all, or have ill feelings toward it. i just knew i wasn’t strong enough at that time to pull myself together in this environment.
I was literally going out almost every sunday, monday, thursday, friday, saturday night every single week
I was stupid and undisciplined and didnt realize what i was getting myself into and after doing it for a few years, there was really no escape in sight.
throw in a little bit of drug use and a whole lot of drinking, it can add up to a big problem.
great that you can separate the 2 - that’s not easy to do. but you seem to really have a good idea of what’s best for you, so good for you for going after it and getting control of your life.
ok, on a lighter note, i’m off to the open - GO METS!! :)
Enjoy mook!!! :)
