So if reyes and stokes are still there does that mean evans isnt?

  2. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:30 pm (#814816)

Louis Castillo is not going to be activated today. He volunteered to wait a few days. Argenis Reyes will start at second base.

Wow…that sounds a bit bizarre. Wonder what the real story is?

  3. Comment posted by Doc believes! on August 23, 2008 at 4:30 pm (#814817)

Maybe Jerry saw him run and volunteered him.

Martin finds the area above the flower boxes in the left-center gap. 3-2 Phillies.

  6. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:31 pm (#814819)

I don’t think so john. To me it means they didn’t activate castillo. Everyone’s still here.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!

  8. Comment posted by john on August 23, 2008 at 4:32 pm (#814822)

    Weirdness.

So he actually said “its ok ill stay in the minors a bit longer”?

  9. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:33 pm (#814823)

i know, shea…very interesting. But if that’s really what happened, that’s really pretty cool of luis. I bet they want to wait on maine’s start.

I also wonder if they cant put easley on the DL to rest his quad for a few weeks…

  10. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:33 pm (#814824)

I guarantee you someone volunteered him. He didn’t volunteer on his own.

  11. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:34 pm (#814825)

Someone “volunteered” him, john. bet on it.

  12. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:34 pm (#814826)

    aww, russell… :)

I also think Castillo doesn’t feel quite comfortable yet b/c he hasn’t been hitting well at all. He probably would like a little more time to get his swing back

  13. Comment posted by john on August 23, 2008 at 4:36 pm (#814827)

Wonder if he wont mind staying there till I dunno September 1st? :)

  14. Comment posted by Dep on August 23, 2008 at 4:41 pm (#814828)

lol. this is like a soap opera

    as the luis castillo turns

  15. Comment posted by Dep on August 23, 2008 at 4:43 pm (#814829)

    Here’s the Castillo-less lineup:

    Reyes, ss
    A. Reyes, 2b
    Wright, 3b
    Delgado, 1b
    Beltran, cf
    Murphy, lf
    Church, rf
    Schneider, c
    Maine, rhp

  16. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:43 pm (#814830)

You can all laugh if you’d like, but I’d bet jerry fought it. he didn’t want to break up the non existent chemistry while his team was winning ;-)

mook, I actually like your idea of DLing Easley, but I doubt jerry would do it.

I also think Castillo doesn’t feel quite comfortable yet b/c he hasn’t been hitting well at all. He probably would like a little more time to get his swing back

I think you’re giving him way toooo much credit, But hey, you are definitely entitled to give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t….lol! I firmly believe he was told he had to wait a few days.

  17. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:44 pm (#814831)

I love any lineup with murphy and church in it, even though i’d prefer murph in the 2 spot

  18. Comment posted by john on August 23, 2008 at 4:45 pm (#814832)

Thats what id like to see

    Reyes, ss
    Murphy, lf
    Wright, 3b
    Delgado, 1b
    Beltran, cf
    Church, rf
    Castro, c
    A. Reyes, 2b
    Maine, rhp

  19. Comment posted by Xorley on August 23, 2008 at 4:45 pm (#814833)

Luis is setting an example for this selfish team of what it means to be a team player. He also probably does not want to make the rest of the team look bad with his great play ability. Luis is a very selfless professional.

  20. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:46 pm (#814834)

Wow…the bottom of the order actually looks like a baseball team these days….lol!

  21. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:47 pm (#814835)

ha, maybe i’m giving castillo too much credit to contrast with fans giving him too much blame for everything else!

who knows what went down, but at the very least, you know jerry didn’t fight for luis!

  22. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:48 pm (#814836)

I think part of the decision had nothing to do with castillo and everyhting to do with Maine. I’m sure they were reluctant to send Stokes down with Maine pitching tonight. And I bet jerry fought for Argenis. That’s my guess.

  23. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#814837)

    From the new delcos:

Luis Castillo will not be activated today. He spoke with Jerry Manuel just before we met with the manager. Manuel said Castillo said he needed a few extra days to get up to speed. He didn’t want to join a team that was playing so well if he didn’t think he was ready. Manuel respected the decision.

Ryan Church will start again tonight. But there was other news.

Manuel said he and Dan Werthen would monitor John Maine closely tonight. They will consider skipping him at some point if they have options (after Sept. 1) and they think he needs it.

Manuel also confirmed that he and Werthen had discussions about skipping Pelfrey’s start in Florida but hadn’t decided anything yet. … I’m telling you folks, this inning count will be an issue from here on out. Sabermetrics is here to stay.

  24. Comment posted by Danny on August 23, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#814838)

I want to call him ARGHenis now. Why is he hitting second?

  25. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:52 pm (#814839)

because he PLAYS second, danny! it’s like a requirement. Much like the 3B must bat 3rd, even if DW sits. We should be thankful Delgado doesn’t lead off

  26. Comment posted by Dep on August 23, 2008 at 4:52 pm (#814840)

stupid sabermetrics! all protecting young pitchers arms n shit! boooooooo! evil!

  27. Comment posted by john on August 23, 2008 at 4:53 pm (#814841)

I want to call him ARGHenis now. Why is he hitting second?

Because lil Jerry does not understand the importance of the 2 spot I suppose. That sub .300 OBP and SLG really helps in that spot :)

  28. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:54 pm (#814842)

    lol!

  29. Comment posted by Dep on August 23, 2008 at 4:55 pm (#814843)

i think he just likes writing reyes 2x in a row on the scorecard

  30. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:55 pm (#814844)

it is just complete foolishness to skip pelf against a team that owns him - phuck sabermetrics! ;)

  31. Comment posted by udamnwright Dunn should come cheap on August 23, 2008 at 4:55 pm (#814845)

Shea when did you meet show and where can i find the post about it?

  32. Comment posted by Xorley on August 23, 2008 at 4:55 pm (#814846)

Sabermetrics should be fired if he keeps making an issue out of pitch counts.

  33. Comment posted by Danny on August 23, 2008 at 4:56 pm (#814847)

I don’t want to harp on this. But ARGHenis is a really bad offensive player. He’s awful.

  34. Comment posted by john on August 23, 2008 at 4:56 pm (#814848)

i think he just likes writing reyes 2x in a row on the scorecard

Then have him start at the 9th spot…..put reyes there then go to number 1 spot :)

  35. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 4:57 pm (#814849)

It’s the perfect time to skip Pelfrey.

  36. Comment posted by Dep on August 23, 2008 at 4:57 pm (#814850)

LOL john. that would solve it

  37. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 4:59 pm (#814851)

exactly, shea. that was my point - even if they weren’t trying to limit his innings it would make sense. it really doesn’t have much to do with sabermetrics in this case

  38. Comment posted by Danny on August 23, 2008 at 4:59 pm (#814852)

Well, I shouldn’t worry about Jerry’s lineups. It’s not like Jerry would ever do something crazy like bat Easley third against a righty.

  39. Comment posted by john on August 23, 2008 at 4:59 pm (#814853)

    A. Reyes wasnt even good offensively in the minors………he’s horrendous.

  40. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 5:01 pm (#814854)

Udamn, I met Show, Heilman and Maine at a bar in Pittsburgh when we went for geek weekend. There really isn’t a post. Booey heard rumors of it and emailed me about it. I wrote him back with the whole story. That’s what he was referring to. I’ll send you the same email, but I don’t have your email address anymore. You’ve changed it from the one I had.

  41. Comment posted by Xorley on August 23, 2008 at 5:02 pm (#814855)

the only one qualified to bat second is Luis. He puts the ball in play.

  42. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 5:03 pm (#814856)

i’d love to see a breakdown of hitters in the 2 spot and Jose’s production - i.e., what kind of pitches he sees with Argenis behind him v. murph/evans or castillo or church

  43. Comment posted by john on August 23, 2008 at 5:03 pm (#814857)

Batting Luis second is only a step up from Reyes batting second. It should be Church or Murphy…..prehaps Beltran

  44. Comment posted by udamnwright Dunn should come cheap on August 23, 2008 at 5:04 pm (#814858)

If willie were still around i would make some joke aboutit being jose 9 and arg 1 since willie hates jose and loves light hitting 2nd baseman

  45. Comment posted by mookie03 on August 23, 2008 at 5:07 pm (#814859)

ideally, i like murph/evans in the 2 spot over church. i like church behind one of the carloses. But i also like the idea of arg or castillo in the 9th spot, although it would waste the pitcher’s spot b/c it’s tough to bunt over either of the catchers

  46. Comment posted by Xorley on August 23, 2008 at 5:08 pm (#814860)

  56. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 5:19 pm (#814870)

Willie had Church in the 2 hole for awhile, but I can’t remember Manuel ever having anyone but Reyes, Castillo Anderson or Easley there…..even Endy. He did have Murphy a few times when he first got to the team. Then damn him….he started hitting and Manuel moved him down….lol! I”m not sure what all those guys have in common that makes manuel like them in the 2 hole. None of them can hit?

Evans seems to hit 2nd a decent amount or am I crazy

No, you’re right udamn. I forgot about him. He does bat Evans 2nd when he plays. He sort of the odd guy in the “which one of these doesn’t belong” quiz when trying to figure out jerry’s reasoning. He’s the one who makes the most sense, imo.

  68. Comment posted by Danny on August 23, 2008 at 5:32 pm (#814882)

Evans hits second because Manuel always plays Easley against lefties and so he like Easley lower in the lineup.

  69. Comment posted by Danny on August 23, 2008 at 5:36 pm (#814883)

If ARGHenis plays, he will always hit second.

  70. Comment posted by sheadenizen on August 23, 2008 at 5:38 pm (#814884)

If ARGHenis plays, he will always hit second.

When Castillo plays, he will always hit second. Both are true.
