Johan Santana vs Roy Oswalt

If we hadn’t traded Gomez, just think about it-
Endy/Beltrán/Gómez. That is not just todays best outfield; we’re getting into alltime territory.

Santana is worth every penny. I should have bought his wine to go with this Reyes Cabernet, which is pretty good. On my 4th glass. About to pissy.

if his lack of “wins” isn’t causing him to be maybe the most under-rated starter in baseball this season.

The Met bullpen cost him the Cy Young Award this year, period.

if johan wins out and keeps this up, he has a VERY good shot at winning.

Really? That would be cool, but I wouldn’t have thought it was possible.

Well, also the offense earlier in the season… but yeah. Santana is only out of the Cy Young discussion because of things outside of his control.

I’ll stick with having Santana over Gogo, though, as great as the kid is going to be.

I mean, I’m about as loathe toward trading away young talent as anyone but… Santana is an exception to basically every rule.

if he has 16 wins and the lowest ERA in the NL on a division championship team…that’s a pretty good resume

heilman’s story will be lost in the shuffle tonight. he was pounding low in the zone & got not one break on the ball/strike calls. nevertheless he was successful and for that we are thankful. amen

    Brian Schneider .333 (10 for 30), 3 HR, 7 RBIs last 11 games.

Oh, and he pwns Oswalt. Something like 5-9.

I think I might be a little buzzed.

I’m sure the team is in a good mood too.

  23. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on August 22, 2008 at 9:58 pm (#814557)

Heilman’s performance won’t be lost for those reasons, though.

It’ll be lost because we’ve all cried wolf fifteen times this season already, seeing him pitch one good inning and declaring him “back!” and then he tanks the next three games.

I mean, at this point, he just doesn’t get any credit for one good inning. He’s lost that privledge through his performance this season.

    Rosenthal’s Latest: Howard, Burrell, Burnett
By Tim Dierkes [August 22 at 4:29pm CST]

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has a new column up today.

    * With Ryan Howard looking at maybe a $14MM salary in his second year of arbitration, the Phillies could shop him this winter. Rosenthal lays out a scenario where they trade Howard and use some of those young players to acquire Matt Holliday. In this scenario Pat Burrell could be re-signed to play first base. I was surprised to see that a club official sees the chances of retaining Burrell as better than 50-50.
    * If A.J. Burnett opts out, he will again favor teams such as the Nationals, Orioles, and Cardinals. Rosenthal thinks the Yankees and Mets are possible as well. And it’s still possible the Jays convince Burnett to stay by adding to his ‘09 and ‘10 salaries.
    * Rosenthal frowns upon the Mariners’ double-failure to unload Jarrod Washburn’s contract.

Heyman’s Latest: Bowden, Helton, Maddux, K-Rod
By Tim Dierkes [August 22 at 3:53pm CST]

Let’s take a look at the latest from SI.com’s Jon Heyman.

    * Despite the headline “Nats GM in trouble,” Heyman says Jim Bowden has the support of his bosses. They do not blame him for Aaron Crow and are not concerned with his possible connection to the scout skimming scandal.
    * Heyman suggests the Rockies could shop first baseman Todd Helton this winter if he demonstrates a healthy back in September. Here’s the thing - if Helton was a free agent and you had to give him a three-year deal, what would you pay? $5MM a year maybe? Are the Rockies going to eat $40MM? Helton might have to be swapped for another bad contract.
    * Heyman sees Ryan Dempster getting four years and $48MM, and Oliver Perez snagging $60MM over five. Are they worth that?
    * People close to Greg Maddux are saying he wants to pitch next year. Heyman also sees John Smoltz and Tom Glavine back in ‘09.
    * “Some are expecting” the Reds to be big players in free agency this year. The Reds figure to be in the market for catching and outfield help. Manny Ramirez would be interesting.
    * Heyman wonders if the Mets will be players for Francisco Rodriguez this winter.

Was Heilman sporting a soul patch? Made him look positively Greek God-like crossed with . . . uh . . . Maynard G. Krebs.

I, for one, was more pleased with the man’s K to end the 8th, of course. But a soul patch would be nice. Or was it just a trick of the light on that manly chin?

  64. Comment posted by tim in ST.L on August 22, 2008 at 11:23 pm (#814598)

I had a little thing for Rita Moreno growing up….I was feeling nostalgic and started watching a bunch of old Sesame Street clips on YouTube, when the opening song to the Elecric Co came on….those two shows were great….I really learned a lot from those shows.
Watch some of the old Cookie Monster skits, I dare you not to laugh your butt off. Are we in the same age bracket Athena? I know a gentleman doesn’t ask but for reference sake.

I loved the old Sesame Street. I especially love all the old songs. And Electric Company was just great. I learned to read watching that show. What a cast.

Morgan Freeman, Rita Moreno, Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, Bill Cosby. I just looked that up and I’m shocked. But I remembered Moreno, Freeman and Cosby.

Cubs are way too deep to be falling to Earth now.

A lot more like a Cubs team sitting on their laurels and a Nationals team playing out of intense frustration and… getting a day of good luck, just taking it out on a team already looking to October.
