All Omar said was that Castillo’s OBP was in the .370 range, and if he keeps that up and steals 30 bases that he should play everyday because that is what they signed him to do.
sounds about right

Much as the bullpen terrifies me, forcing Castillo and Church and so on back into the mix is potentially even scarier.
The guys on the team in the last month or so were the guys who got this team into first place DESPITE this bullpen collapsing.
Castillo is complacency setting back into the clubhouse and Church is a drama of having to handle him like he’s made of spun sugar.
What the Mets have had positionally has been working most of the time. Why mess with it?

Castillo was on pace for 100 runs. That’s all that really matters from him, in my book. He wasn’t hitting, but he was walking like mad.
It’s funny because Omar says that about Castillo but says nothing when Jerry states that Church will be coming off the bench.

Manuel: Church should be set for tomorrow
Jerry Manuel confirmed that Ryan Church should be in right field at Shea on Friday night, after a final game with Binghamton.
“He’s healthy, playing well, obviously getting the at-bats that he needs,” Manuel said. “And he hasn’t had any setbacks. With all those things being said, if he does have another good night, he could be playing right field tomorrow night (at Shea).”
Manuel said he’d probably use Church on Friday and Saturday, then give him Sunday off.
Luis Castillo should be at Shea on Friday, too. His 20-day minor-league rehab has expired, but the Mets won’t commit to activating him until reviewing his workout in Flushing.

And if you’re one of those people who believes in team chemistry, what could be worse than a guy being handed a position back after long injury for the sole reason that he’s being paid too much to be benched?
Let alone a guy whose two additions to the team seem to be grounding into double plays and walking so that he can limp into second as the lead out in a double play.

Comment posted by Doc believes! on August 21, 2008 at 5:44 pm (#812551)
The issue with Castillo batting 2 is that it reduces the incentive to pitch to Reyes in late game RBI spots, plus Castillo can’t drive a run home from first with an extra base hit. The two position in modern baseball is basically a power position IMO and you need some pop there, something Castillo can’t provide.
Comment posted by sweetlew on August 21, 2008 at 6:34 pm (#812558)
Fair enough Doc.
I prefer Church in the #2 spot, but will live with Castillo; who, while not a power guy, gets on base enough that he can help bring DW up in key spots late in games with runners on base…….

Although, if everyone is playing and healthy, I would have to believe Jerry has Beltran in the 2 spot, Church in the 5 spot and Castillo hitting 8.
Fair enough Doc.
I prefer Church in the #2 spot, but will live with Castillo; who, while not a power guy, gets on base enough that he can help bring DW up in key spots late in games with runners on base…….
