The Game

Mike Pelfrey helped the Mets steamroll the faltering Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night, by a score of 6-3. Big Pelf threw his first career shutout, limiting the Bravos to merely three hits on the evening.

The Mets jumped on opposing starter Jair Jurrjens early on in the game. After allowing a single and two walks, Daniel Murphy took a Jurrjens delivery up the middle for a two run single. With Murphy on first, Fernando Tatis hit a grounder to Larry Jones at third. Jones fielded the ball, but threw low to Dick Stuart, the first baseman (Excuse the typo; Greg Norton was actually the first baseman last night). Norton couldn’t handle the throw, and two additional runners crossed the plate. On the very next play, Brian Schneider hit a grounder to shortstop Yunel Escobar. Escobar threw a bit high to Norton, who dropped a very catch able throw. The next batter, Mike Pelfrey, hit an RBI single to increase the Mets lead to 5-0. Jones and Escobar were charged with errors on the plays, despite the obvious misplays of iron glover Greg Norton. The early five run hole proved to be too deep for the young Jair Jurrens to dig himself out of. He’d be tagged with the loss on the evening, downgrading his record to 11-9.

Mike Pelfrey was simply dominant last night. Even when he loaded up the bases in the 6th, he got Brian McCann to ground into a double play. Pelfrey didn’t need K’s last night (Pelf only recorded three punch-outs), because he limited his walks (Three walks allowed), and got his flyball outs (Groundout to strikeout rate 9-15). Mike Pelfrey became the first Met to twelve wins this season last night.

This was a nice, quick victory. No bullpen needed in this win, Pelfrey brought this game home in two hours and eight minutes. David Wright added an insurance run in the 6th inning, a solo jack off of Jair Jurrjens. The Mets disposed quickly of the Braves in this series’ first two games, so Thursday evening they’ll go for the sweep. Pedro Martinez will take off against Mike Hampton. Hampton will be making his first major league start since May of 1983.
