Grounder in the hole on the right side. Delgado can’t reach it, but Reyes flags it down, turns and whips it to Reyes for one, back to the pitcher Reyes covering for the DP.

    from toby hyde

A friend sent me the following email Wednesday morning:

Wilmer Flores is looking good– another Reyes in the making perhaps?

Before pulling up the stats, I wrote:

Naw, Flores is bigger than Reyes with more power at the same age, but less
speed. At 6′4″ Flores is a different kind of player.

Then I pulled up the numbers. Both players made their professional
debut with Kingsport of the Appalachian League at age 16, but turned 17 that
summer. The following table compares Reyes’ 2000 in the APP with Flores’
2008 when both players were the same age:
Player G AB AVG OBP SLG 2B 3B HR BB SO SB CS E
    Reyes 49 132 .250 .359 .318 3 3 0 20 37 10 4 11
    Flores 53 220 .332 .374 .523 12 3 8 11 25 2 1 15

    WOW!

    Fun facts:

    1. Reyes played seven games at thirdbase, a position he would never play
    again as a professional.

    2. Reyes has never slugged .500 at any level of baseball.

    3. The 10 stolen bases are the lowest of Reyes’ career. His next lowest was
24 in 2004, a year he played in only 64 games, largely at the major league
    level.

    roto’s take….

The New York Post reports that the Mets have signed Al Reyes, who was let go by the Rays earlier this week.
Reyes is injury prone and comes with some off-field baggage, but remains a solid reliever capable of helping the Mets’ mess of a bullpen. He has a 4.37 ERA and 19/10 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings this season and could work his way into a late-inning role pretty quickly. Aug. 20 - 3:49 pm et
    Source: New York Post

whether or not this and ayala works remains to be seen, but I’m fairly impressed omar was able to bring in 2 guys like that, who have at least have some very quality years in their pasts.

According to Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros claimed infielder Jose Castillo off waivers today. Castillo will be Astros property for ‘09 as well, if they want him (he’s still arbitration-eligible).

The 27 year-old hit .244/.290/.381 in 420 plate appearances for the Giants while seeing time at second base, shortstop, and third base.

    MLBtrade’s take:

    Mets Sign Al Reyes
By Tim Dierkes [August 20 at 2:44pm CST]

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have signed reliever Al Reyes. He’s earning $2.3MM this year, most of which the Rays are covering.

Reyes, 38, posted a 4.37 ERA in 22.2 innings this year along with decent peripheral stats. Reyes missed time this year with biceps tendinitis and a shoulder impingement, and also made the news for an April bar fight. Solid signing for the Mets; it’s not hard to envision Reyes picking up a few saves.

Im glad he realizes the pen sucks………..who knows whether this will help but right now it cant hurt.

If either Ayala or Reyes turns out to have a terrific September and is a major factor in winning the division, Omar will be rightfully lauded as “a genius with a knack for finding lightning in a bottle.” Meantime, he’s undoubtedly doing the things he’s got to do. Nice job.

  8. Comment posted by Dep on August 20, 2008 at 4:47 pm (#811352)

I feel a lot better that maybe A. Reyes and Ayala can give us some quality appearances these last 6 weeks vs whomever else was being looked at internally.

I think as GM, the only thing u can really do is try and improve the team……..while these guys arent studs, they might be an upgrade. Omar got all that he could get at this point.

  12. Comment posted by fatt lipp on August 20, 2008 at 4:52 pm (#811356)

Omar just took advantage of our weakened bullpen situation to continue to stock the roster with Latinos.

Ayala and Reyes to the rescue. Thank Goodness Omar brought in some solid help instead of sitting on his hands like last year. They may not be the greatest relievers hes picking up but it helps and should solidify the bullpen somewhat.

Exactly and it also dismisses any notion of our starters going to the pen. Although if it comes down to the last week all hands will have to be on deck and ready to go. We cant let it slip away like last year

    exactly. key point. i’m pleased.

i’m sure we’d all rather have fuentes or a marte-type, but that’s just not realistic at this point.

scrap heap options only, and in terms of that, these guys aint so bad.

    now just pitch well!

Hmm his K rates are good. They have dropped a bit this season…….plus his FB only averages 86.9…..about two mph less than last year.

Lefties are hurting him this year but he’s been very solid against righties.

  20. Comment posted by john on August 20, 2008 at 5:01 pm (#811364)

    Career OPS vs Righties .648
    2008 OPS .646

    Career OPS vs Lefties .745
    2008 OPS .849 (with a BABIP tho of .348)

If he can be closer to his career numbers against lefties, I think he could be a solid pickup

New game enemy takes a solid day to defeat
Players pass out, get sick during extreme battle.

If it’s good enough for Cartman, it’s good enough for Square-Enix.

The developers of the online role-playing game Final Fantasy XI seemingly borrowed a page from the Emmy-winning South Park episode “Make Love, Not Warcraft” by updating the game with one of the longest - and most physically grueling - video game fights ever. Introduced in the game’s latest downloadable update, the boss monster “Pandemonium Warden” remained perfectly fit after a group of high-level adventurers wailed away at it nonstop for over 18 hours straight.

    FINAL FANTASY XI SCREENS

Though the seemingly unbeatable boss will not prevent people from ‘completing’ the game — persistent online games typically do not “end” like most single-player games — it has sparked debate over what exactly the game’s developers, Square-Enix, expect out of their devoted fan base. Message boards have lit up with disgruntled players calling out the company for failing to respect its very own in-game warning telling players they have “no desire to see your real life suffer as a consequence [of playing]. Don’t forget your friends, your family, your school or your work.”

Easy for them to say. While the beast continually healed, the gamers weren’t so lucky.

“People were passing out and getting physically ill,” leaders of the player guild said in a forum post. “We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible news story about how video games ruin people’s lives.”

    Too late.

  28. Comment posted by john on August 20, 2008 at 5:06 pm (#811372)

his overall LD rate is fairly high 23.4%

I think that has to come down tho. I mean over his the last few years its been much lower then that. I dont know if its that high cause of an injury prehaps? Last year it was around 19% but before that it was very low.

  29. Comment posted by john on August 20, 2008 at 5:09 pm (#811373)

People like to say that BABIP is or isnt sustainable……I wonder how LD% correlates year to year.

Like is someone has a 25% LD rate and his BABIP is .370 and someone says well the Line Drive rate explains the high BABIP……but does that really mean we can expect that going forward? I’d imagine that unlike GB and FB rates, LD rates jump quite a bit. I dunno for sure tho.

  30. Comment posted by Dep on August 20, 2008 at 5:09 pm (#811374)

    who knows.

whateverz. we’ll judge him by how he does from this point on!

  31. Comment posted by Dep on August 20, 2008 at 5:10 pm (#811375)

    I think that’s a good point john.

I’ve seen LD% for a given year compared to career #’s all the time in order to determine if that LD% is sustainable.

I guess its just making the different point of the BABIP being undeservedly unlucky (or lucky) or having a great year in terms of LD% that probly isnt sustainable in future years

Btw It surprises me that with a 87 mph fastball, he can strike out around 7 per 9 innings but pelfrey with a 95mph fastball can only get like 5 per 9 lol.

yup, could be secondary stuff could be command-oriented. i’m sure reyes has much better command of his. also he’s been around FOREVER, he knows how to pitch a bit more.

  37. Comment posted by john on August 20, 2008 at 5:15 pm (#811381)

Thats really the key. Although Pelfrey is throwing two sets of fastballs I still think somewhere down the load he’s going to have to develop offspeed pitches.

  47. Comment posted by john on August 20, 2008 at 5:21 pm (#811391)

    Lets have him go 9.

Right now I dont trust this pen AT ALL and we need to keep winning lol.

I’ll worry about Pelfrey down the line. Maybe we open a decent lead and can limit him somehow or prehaps our pen gets better and we can limit him anyways.
