Daily Mets Recap: August 17th, 2008
The Game
The Mets made their fans nervous in the process, but pulled out a 7-4 victory over the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night. Pedro Martinez went seven strong innings en route to his 4th win of the season.
The Mets jumped on opposing starter Zach Duke early. Jose Reyes led off the game by launching a solo home run to give the Mets the 1-0 edge. Later on in the frame, Carlos Beltran would double in David Wright, and Fernando Tatis would single in Beltran. In the 2nd, with Pedro Martinez on base, Reyes tagged Duke for his 2nd hit in as many innings; an RBI triple. The Mets wouldn’t score another run until the 6th inning, when Ramon Castro crushed a two run home run.
Pedro Martinez allowed just one run in his seven innings of work, a solo home run to Adam LaRoche in the 7th. Other than that, Martinez was masterful. He’d walk only one, and allow only one earned run despite giving up eight hits. He’d leave after the 7th, having thrown 95 pitches.
After Pedro left, long reliever Brian Stokes entered the game. Stokes had a tidy 8th inning, getting through the frame having thrown only 12 pitches. The Mets would have a 7-1 lead entering the ninth.
Things got dicey in the ninth. The Mets called upon rookie Eddie Kunz to close things out, but he’d be unable to get through the inning (Kunz retired only one batter). He allowed three hits and three earned runs, before giving way to Joe Smith. Smith came on to face Freddy Sanchez, who would single to left field, somehow allowing the Pirates to get the tying run to the plate. Fortunately, Pedro Feliciano would get Ryan Doumit to fly out, and Adam LaRoche to ground out, finishing up the game.
