First day a success! Light drinking at the nearby bar to celebrate the night’s victory. Fun had by all although Dep left early to commit nefarious deeds.
Tomorrow, Zod beats us all up.

Three-Quarter Mark.
Considering all the injuries and all the bullpen inconsistency, I’ll take one-up with forty left to go, Lord knows.
Lets go Mets go.

The Padres just… suck. Across the board.

I’m right there with ya, NJ!
Funny how their “superstar” Melky got sent down.
Wasn’t he once the centerpiece of about a dozen trade rumors?

The Yankees do a better job of hyping their prospects (and pseudo prospects) than we do. Of course, having a synchophantic media helps.
Good morning, Geeks. Looking forward to seeing many of you later today. Sorry to miss out last night — sounded like loads of fun.
And nobody better ever say a word against Show again if Shea is in the vicinity. LOL!

Wonder how many of Sabathia, Manny, Teixeria, Francisco Rodriguez and Sheets they will bring in after this season?

It’s an interesting question. I read a fascinating article in the paper yesterday (News or Post, I forget which) on my way to Pitt. The article commented on how Hank talks all the while, but isn’t the real power at the Yankees (or even particularly interested). The article pointed out that Hank has been to precisely ONE game at Yankee Stadium this year — and that was Opening Day. When his father was honored at the AS game (I think it was), Hank was MIA. When there was a memorial service for some former Yankee, Hank was MIA. When Murcer was laid to rest in Texas, Hank was MIA. Hal, otoh, was present on all three occasions. And Hal is the one handling and controlling the money, which means that Hal is the real power there now. According to this article anyway, which made Hank sound like a powerless blowhard as well as an idiot.
So it should be interesting to see what happens next year. How much will they spend?

g’morning lucien and SuperT….
Interesting comments on Hank. Makes you wonder if he has that “championship or bust” drive that his dad possessed. I do believe the Yankees are headed in the wrong direction and right now the family only seems concerned with raking in as much cash as possible with the new stadium.
Comment posted by lucienlc on August 16, 2008 at 10:36 am (#807670)
The thing I wonder about is whether or not the family will be able to keep the Yankees after George passes. Given the value of the franchise, and YES, not even addressing their other assets, the estate taxes are going to be prohibitive, in all likelihood. So, are they trying to rake in money now, to put toward the tax burden because they want to keep the team, or are they trying to rake in what they can before being faced with the possibly inevitable sale.
Comment posted by lucienlc on August 16, 2008 at 10:37 am (#807671)
Obviously, Hal does not have the “championship or bust” drive of his father — he’s more practical. Hank may have the desire, but not the power to effectuate it.

If I were the mets, I wouldn’t touch ben sheets. He’s always injured and he’s from Milwaukee, moving to NYC. Same thing with teixera, except he’s too good to let that bother him. I’ve never been a big fan of CC. manny is a dinosaur. K-Rod is someone I might look at seriously, if he hasn’t blown his arm after 60 saves. so all in all, I’d look at either K-Rod or Teixera.
K-Rod’s peripherals and stuff are way down and his motion screams eventual TJ surgery.
There is no way in hell I want K-Rod. Not as a closer, not for closer type money, whatever.
I don’t want Sheets because he’s so fragile, not because he’s from Milwaukee. I’d love Sabathia, it would be nice to finally have our first competent hitting pitcher since Gooden. :) The problem is you know he will take way too much money to sign.
Comment posted bylittlefallsmetson August 16, 2008 at 12:39 pm (#807675)
I dunno, I’d be a lot lot LOT more concerned with Sabathia breaking down physically than F-Rod.
And, anyway, if the Mets manage to resign Ollie and Maine, they’ve GOT a really good 1-4 starting rotation for next year whereas…
We’ve seen what it looks like when you don’t have a guy with both the talent and the headspace to close and it is awful.
Texavery, though, overpriced? Sure. But everyone’s overpriced and he’s the damn total package as far as a firstbaseman goes.
And Sabathia has made 30 or more starts in every season of his career. Just because he’s fat doesn’t mean he’s more likely to get hurt.

The powers to be of MLB are definitely doing everything in their power to kill the game for future generations. Not advertising their players, not showing their games, not promoting the game for young Americans to play, showing different playoff games at the same time, etc, etc.
But seeing it is a slow Saturday and as excited as I am about the Mets current standing, I can’t help but think about the end of the season.
The only big $ FA I want the Mets to sign is Ollie Perez. We know he can handle NY. He is young (27). He rises up in big games, and he isn’t injury prone. He should be the Mets #1 priority this offseason. After the team inks him their SP rotation is set for at least the next 4-5 seasons…
Santana 29 y/o
Maine 27 y/o
Perez 27 y/o
Big Pelf 24 y/o
Niese 21/22 y/o
Parnell 23/24 y/o
Notice there is no “Pedro Martinez”. This offseason the following current players should be cut loose…Pedro Martinez, El Duque, Carlos Delgado, and Moises Alou. With their ages and limited production they simply are not worth the $’s they’re costing the team. Just like Tom Glavine I think they would be worth more to the Mets trying to get a draft pick or two for them.
We have several young players (Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans, F-Mart, Jon Niese, Robert Parnell, Carlos Muniz, and Eddie Kunz) that could competently fill their vacant spots.
After re-upping Ollie and letting the older players go, the next course of business should be improving the bullpen…we have arguably the best SP rotation in the NL, and need to have a bullpen that can be counted on to hold on to and shut down games.

I guess you don’t look at the pitching mechanics then. Every time K-Rod throws, I wince because of how awful his motion is.
And Sabathia has made 30 or more starts in every season of his career. Just because he’s fat doesn’t mean he’s more likely to get hurt.
