ah, the south. so open minded.

PEARL, Miss. — They’re not exactly rooting for him, but prominent white supremacists anticipate a boost to their cause if Barack Obama becomes the first black president.

Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, of Louisiana, said Democrat Obama would be a “visual aid” to the idea that whites have lost control of America.

Duke, once a Democrat who became a Republican in 1988 and served in the Louisiana House of Representatives, posted an essay on his Web site in June titled, “Obama Wins Demo Nomination: A Black Flag for White America.”

Obama “will be a clear signal for millions of our people,” Duke wrote. “Obama is a visual aid for White Americans who just don’t get it yet that we have lost control of our country, and unless we get it back we are heading for complete annihilation as a people.”

Richard Barrett, a 65-year-old lawyer who traveled the country for 40 years advocating what he perceives as the white side in racial issues, is convinced Obama will defeat Republican John McCain in November.

One of the leaders in the Nationalist Movement, Barrett told The Associated Press in an interview at his rural Mississippi home that, “Instead of this so-called civil rights bill, for example, that says you have to give preferences to minorities, I think the American people are going — once they see the ‘Obamanation’ — they’re going to demand a tweaking of that and say, ‘You have to put the majority into office,’” Barrett said.

While most Americans have little or no direct contact with white supremacists, organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center keep close tabs; the law center estimates some 200,000 people nationwide are active in such groups.

I took Kat Wildish’s class at Ailey - only she wasn’t teaching..but she took the class! She was really funny. First class in almost 2 years…I kind of sucked but I still felt pretty good about it. I now want to quit my job and just start dancing all day again :(

That’s funny! She’s hysterical. I’ve taken her class a couple of times. It’s really fun. She does this strange inverted pose-thingy with the barre. I’ll describe it when I see you.

I know what you mean about wanting to dance every day instead of going to your grown-up job. It’s very tough. I empathize. We’ll talk about that, too. ;-)

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that New York Mets Minor League pitchers Leandro Geremy and Jose Valentin, both of whom are with the organization’s Dominican Summer League team, have received 50-game suspensions after each tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Geremy tested positive for metabolites of Nandrolone. Valentin tested positive for a metabolite of Boldenone.

Chris Schwinden, making his third start of the year, and his second in a row, struck out a career high 12 batters in seven innings in a Brooklyn win Thursday night. In 35.1 IP, Schwinden has now struck out 40 while walking six and giving up 25 hits in 35.1 IP. That adds up to a miniscule 1.02 ERA.

The Mets drafted the 6’3” righty in the 22nd round of this June’s draft from Fresno-Pacific University after a dynamite senior season. In 90.2 IP in this year for the Sunbirds, Schwinden fanned 96, walked 22 and held opponents to a .192 batting average on his way to the Golden State Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year award.

I saw Schwinden for two innings of relief behind Brad Holt, so I was still excitedly talking about Holt with a scout sitting near me. Schwinden’s fastball was 88-90, and he commanded it reasonably well. I don’t have many notes on his breaking ball which means one or both of two things: 1. he didn’t throw it much and 2. it didn’t make a big impression on me.

I’d remind fans once again, that a pitcher with fastball command can survive or even thrive in the NYP League.

    FROM RUBINS BLOG,,,,NY DNEWS

Ryan Church is still awaiting word on the results of Thursday’s tests that could clear him to begin minor-league games. Omar Minaya expected word this weekend. Church just left the clubhouse with batting gloves, so obviously everyone is optimistic.

    • Minaya said one major reason Brian Stokes was selected for Saturday’s start over 21-year-old lefthander Jon Niese is that Mets brass doesn’t want to add him to the 40-man roster so early just for one spot start. Niese doesn’t have to be protected until after the 2009 season. Conceivably, if Maine is back healthy and Pedro Martinez performs, there’s no need to add Niese in September, since he won’t work out of the bullpen.

    • Robinson Cancel is expected to start Saturday over Ramon Castro against Marlins lefthander Scott Olsen. Castro left Thursday’s game with a flareup of right ankle soreness.

    • Minaya said he’s trying to add relief help, but it’s just as difficult now as in August, if not more so.

    Marlins Sign Lo Duca
By Tim Dierkes [August 8 at 4:07pm CST]

According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, the Marlins signed Paul Lo Duca to a minor league deal today. Lo Duca will head to Triple A as the team’s insurance plan.

The Nationals signed Lo Duca for a hefty $5MM in December of ‘07, three days before he was named in the Mitchell Report. The 36 year-old hit just .230/.301/.281 in 153 plate appearances, hobbled by knee surgery and a broken bone in his throwing hand. Lo Duca was a Marlin for part of the ‘04 season and all of ‘05, though he did not hit well for them.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Giles, Teixeira, Dunn, Manny
By Cork Gaines [August 8 at 2:53pm CST]

A few random notes from around the baseball Blogosphere…

    * Orioles Outsider projects what Mark Teixeira should be worth on the open-market and wonders how much above that number the O’s should be willing to go.
    * Baltimore Birds Nest thinks that the only way Teixeira ends up in an O’s uniform next season is if Peter Angelos opens the wallet and makes the biggest offer.
    * Camden Chat would prefer to have Adam Dunn over Teixeira.
    * The Shadow of Manny Ramirez compares the Manny Ramirez trade to a scene from “Sex and the City”…Don’t worry. It went over my head also.
    * Not to be outdone, Soxaholix wonders why every time one of the Sox best players leaves town, it is like an episode of the new “90210″.
