The 3 headed monster of Armvargeroa will be the 5th man in the rotation then it seems…

I feel awful for Pedro. Hopefully he and his family can have some closure now.

I’m sure with 2 days notice I can start for the Mets throwing high heaters and nasty drop balls :)

I know when my pops passed away it was much easier. We, all hated to see him suffer and hooked up to the oxygen and struggle for every breath. It was a blast to watch the 2000 playoffs with him. He, didnt want the yankees in there and he died the same night of game 1 in the w.s.

But, anyway, we all seemed to have a little more normalcy in the house. It hurt like hell, but watching him suffer was more painful. Maybe now Pedro can get it all back

BTW…the Mets came back and won that game and saved Maine’s tush!

LOL, so the one time a starter didn’t have a good start, the bullpen bailed him out? that’s hysterical

  6. Comment posted by lucienlc on July 23, 2008 at 10:27 pm (#778085)

    Yes, brain cancer, I believe.

I’m sure this has been preying on Pedro’s mind all season. He’s been going back and forth to the Dominican whenever he could incl the AS break. I’m sure he knew the end was near. It’s a terrible thing to go through, watching your parents dying by inches. I’ve been there twice, and it’s incredibly difficult to carry on your “normal” life while it’s happening, since your life is everything but normal.

Hopefully, Pedro and his family can find some peace and consolation in the thought that his father is no longer suffering and is in a better place. My condolences and prayers to him and his family.

Hah! Jose Reyes the Philly-killer! 12 career HRs vs Philly. :-)

  10. Comment posted by sarah on July 23, 2008 at 10:29 pm (#778089)

Ready - Perez has only pitched 18.1 innings in his 3 starts vs the Phils this year, but his ERA is 0.00.

He’s a weird one. Pitches well against our toughest opponents and stinks it up against the rest of the league. But to be fair, he’s been great lately.

can’t believe Flores has that much power at the age of 16 years old he can stroke it.

Wow. You know its funny all we hear about is how Burrell is a Mets killer and all this crap. We never hear about how Maine owns the Phils or about Reyes.

  14. Comment posted by lucienlc on July 23, 2008 at 10:31 pm (#778093)

Flores is pretty exciting. Amazing at that age.

Reyes’ numbers aren’t quite in the same category. It’s just that he pwns them, relative to the number of HRs he hits against anyone else.

  19. Comment posted by griffyusc on July 23, 2008 at 10:32 pm (#778098)

I would love to see what D.W. and Jose Reyes would look like playing one full year in Philly. I’ve always thought there should be some universial regulations in fence distance to make sure everyone is playing at the same level. Philly’s players numbers are a joke. D.W. would have 30 hrs in philly by now

  22. Comment posted by lucienlc on July 23, 2008 at 10:34 pm (#778101)

    Night, Shea!

It is astonishing that the team is where it is, considering that Johan and Maine collectively won only 2 games last month.

That would take the collective media removing their lips from the posteriors of those gritty Phillies.

Without even looking, I’ll go with Hamels, mookie, because he looks like James Taylor and he lives in Philly.

Well, this win definately erases the pain of yesterday. Win or lose tommorrow we are still in this race. Had we gotten swept it wouldve been a huge hit. I seriously think the Phillies, due to lack of pitching, will fall flat on their faces. Im a little more worried about the Marlins

I’m ecstatic (and relieved) that we won tonight, but how is Manuel not getting pilloried for having Beltran bunt in the 8th? When I heard on the radio Beltran bunted, I was so shocked and outraged I nearly drove my car off the interstate.

You’re going to waste an out with one of your better power hitters at the plate and two slappies coming up behind him? Did you remember that the bullpen gave up six runs in the ninth just 24 hours ago, and thus you might want to try to extend the lead to more than four runs? And furthermore, you’re going to send the message to Beltran that you believe more in Cancel’s and Easley’s abilities to drive in runs than his in the same game where you moved him to the 5 spot? Really?

Again, I’m glad we won, but when this race is going to come down to the final games of the season, these kinds of -EV decisions cannot be justified.

listen, if he walks even once, you’re getting credit and a beer probly ;)

  62. Comment posted by Dep on July 23, 2008 at 11:04 pm (#778141)

Did Jerry say in the postgame he told Tron to bunt??

I honestly think Beltran did it on his own cuz he’s slumping n all that.

i hated it either way. it sucked

  63. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 23, 2008 at 11:05 pm (#778142)

i missed it dep - i was so thrown off by the pedro situation so i didn’t catch what they said about the bunt

  64. Comment posted by Jessica on July 23, 2008 at 11:09 pm (#778143)

I’d bet on Beltran doing that on his own. Wouldn’t be the first time. Also, why do so many “old-school” broadcasters gripe about sluggers not knowing how to play smallball and then bitch when someone actually takes them up on it?

  65. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 23, 2008 at 11:11 pm (#778144)

gary made it sound totally routine that he was bunting, and def made it sound like he was doing it on his own. He was like “and this is to be expected from beltran” as if it was castillo swinging the bat.

  66. Comment posted by Dep on July 23, 2008 at 11:22 pm (#778145)

that’s a really good point jess. broadcasters do say that stuff all the time.

i couldnt believe when gary said this is to be expected of tron.

I’m off for the evening y’all. 1st place again :)

    see you tomorrow

  67. Comment posted by Future, now with a present J.D. on July 23, 2008 at 11:31 pm (#778146)

Beltran randomly bunts I think to mind-#### everyone observing it.

It makes more sense when you attempt to bunt for a hit…but Carlos…Marlon is hitting behind you now…with Snoopy hitting behind you…you swing for the fences.
