Guys, Castro has been in the league since 1999 and has NEVER had more than 209 ABs in a season. Don’t you think that speaks volumes? Granted he’s much better than Schneider, but he’s incredibly frail ( a strange descrpition for such a big guy,) but too many ABs and he’s history for weeks on end. It’s no one’s fault. It is what it is!

So pretend tonight’s game wasn’t rained out…is the positive difference between Castro facing a lefty and a righty as big as the negative difference between Schneider batting against a lefty and a righty?

Schneider’s negative difference is 211 points of OPS. Castro’s positive difference is 301 points.

Castro hits righties about 100 points higher than Schneider anyways.

You guys think it will be a double-header tomorrow? I would think they could make it up at a different point instead of having a doubleheader. If there’s only one game tomorrow it better be Castro, whoever is on the mound be damned.

I agree. But do you really think he’s being sat for health reasons or because Schneider’s the “starter” and he’s the backup? The rationale from Delcos is he is being sat tonight because tomorrow is a day game. If that’s the case I’m ok with it: I’m not starting Castro in a day game after a night game. No way no how.

Nope Fat ass cessa hasnt given the word yet. Hopefully, it passes. Looks pretty bad according to the weather page im looking at

  14. Comment posted by Future, now with a present J.D. on July 23, 2008 at 6:23 pm (#777246)

But if you know for a fact tomorrow is likely to be a rainout…you start Castro tonight anyways.

  15. Comment posted by TLC on July 23, 2008 at 6:24 pm (#777247)

They are most likely going to try to ride this rain out. It is going to be several hours. given the outlook for tomorrow, they would be insane to just call it now since, if the models are correct, the weather will be worse tomorrow during the day

  16. Comment posted by Dep on July 23, 2008 at 6:24 pm (#777248)

    interesting….”weatherman” changing his call….

Their certainly gonna start on time…rain staying over NJ right now…depending on the pace I think they most likely have enough time to make it official but I still wont guarantee this goes 9 though I think the chances are decent.

  17. Comment posted by Dep on July 23, 2008 at 6:25 pm (#777249)

I find it hard to believe they would have called it cuz they lose hours upon hours worth of concessions, plus parking for ppl that havent left yet and all that.

    money rules all

  18. Comment posted by metswin2008 on July 23, 2008 at 6:26 pm (#777251)

I could definately deal with a 1-1 split if tommorrow gets rained out. The Phillies will trip over their own feet and we will have a 3-4 game lead before you know it They seem to be a team that only gets up for big games. We just need to keep taking care of business and we will be fine

  19. Comment posted by Dep on July 23, 2008 at 6:26 pm (#777250)

    Future, I’m with ya.

Snider would never play if i had my druthers, he’d be off this 25-man roster!

  20. Comment posted by sheadenizen on July 23, 2008 at 6:26 pm (#777252)

I think Delcos is right about that. I honestly think he’s being sat because they’re afraid to play him too often because he’s an accident waiting to happen. It’s who is. You would think that a guy with his bat would have been a starting catcher at some point if it was possible. But it’s obviously not. I think Manuel will give him his fair share of starts. but will be cautious as he should be.

  21. Comment posted by Future, now with a present J.D. on July 23, 2008 at 6:27 pm (#777253)

Honestly Cancel is probably better. Maybe Casanova too. Schneider is probably the third or fourth best catcher in the Mets system right now. Either he’s hurt and he’s playing with an injury…but with his lack of defense and lack of hitting…he’s not even in the top 2.

  22. Comment posted by TLC on July 23, 2008 at 6:28 pm (#777254)

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Jim Hickey says Jose Vidro is in the proposed Jarrod Washburn-to-New York deal being discussed.

If that’s the case, then Kei Igawa’s contract would have to be going the other way. The Yankees probably wouldn’t have to part with one of their better prospects if they were willing to take both Washburn and Vidro off Seattle’s books. Hickey says talks are still in the preliminary stages for now. Washburn is capable of vetoing a deal to the Yankees, but whether he would or not is unknown.

    LMAO at this one

All that may be true about Scchneider, but Castro will never be the starting catcher. He just won’t! He’ll trip over home plate and be out for 6 weeks. It’s just what happens to him. Sue his parents for the poor genes!

To be honest part of the reason he was never a starter was 1) he never got an honest to god opportunity to play everyday 2) he never hit like he has in the majors like he has with the Mets.

I think part of the reason he gets hurt is because he’s not in shape. And part of the reason he’s not in shape is because he’s not the starter and never has really been given that opportunity so he hasn’t had the motivation. He’s the best backup catcher in baseball and he’s not getting paid all that much compared to even some of the mediocre starters.

In Florida he never got a chance…getting blocked by inferior players like Mark Redmond and Paul Bako and then Charles Johnson came back and also got to start over him for no reason. Until 2003 he was always blocked by inferior players and then Pudge came around…the first year he was actually blocked by someone good. 2004 was right back to getting blocked by Mark Redmond (what the hell Marlins?)

Then PLD blocked him in Florida and then New York. Ramon Castro hasn’t gotten the opportunity because of being frail…but because of never getting the opportunity. He’s frail now, he’s in his 30s and out of shape…you would be too over all the bottles of Jack you drank to help you forget Mark Redmond blocked you from becoming a starter. On multiple occasions no less.

2003 I believe is the only year he got injured and that was the reason he didn’t end up the starter…that and he was injured the whole year I believe.

There was also a report that was posted here recently that said Castro was asked if he wanted to be the everyday catcher and he told the Mets no.
