Daily Mets Recap: July 20th, 2008

The Game

The Mets lost a sloppy game last night to the Cincinnati Reds, going down by a score of 7-2.

Is this Mets fan allowed to be concerned that the Mets could only muster two runs off of Josh Fogg? I can only hope that the, “let’s make Matt Chico look like Sandy Koufax,” approach isn’t here. On the evening, Fogg went six innings, giving up eight hits, and one earned run (The Mets scored a run in the 1st inning on a fielding error). The earned run came on a David Wright solo home run in the 4th. The reds bullpen came on after Fogg’s outing and shut the door. Jeremy Affeldt, Mike Lincoln, David Weathers, Bill Bray combined for three innings of scoreless relief.

Oliver Perez got the nod for the Mets, and looked slightly more like the Oliver Perez of old than the new, reformed Oliver Perez. He’d go six innings, allowing six hits with three runs, but three walks. He gave his team a chance to win, but unfortunately Pedro Feliciano did not. In Feliciano’s horrific 1/3 of an inning, he’d give up three hits and four earned runs, putting the Mets out of the ballgame. Perez would be tacked with the loss, he’s now 6-6 on the season.

This Mets fan isn’t concerned yet. If Mike Pelfrey isn’t able to turn away the Reds this afternoon, then I think the Mets fan will have cause for concern. Nobody thought the Mets would be able to keep up their ten game winning streak forever, so now we’ll get to see what kind of team we have in 2008.

Today Mike Pelfrey will try to salvage a split of this series against Edinson Volquez and the Cincinnati Reds.
