Oh story time. When the Mets came to San Diego…Adrian Gonzales after an inning threw the ball to my brother and there is another kid next to him. My brother and the kid both go for the ball and a Mets fan wearing a NY Giants hat rips it out of my brother’s hands.

I was ashamed to be in two of the same fanbases as the prick. It seriously made me so angry I told my brother you know, what you’re supposed to do is kick him in the nuts. Fight dirty. The guy looked back at me as I was saying it.

Church speaking now. He evidently has history of migraines, and the doctor thinks the dizziness was caused by one. Church said it’s just like the ones he’s had in the past.

I guess Maine is okay, sounds like?

Mets manager Jerry Manuel said he was giving “strong consideration” to moving Beltran to the No. 2 spot in the lineup. He batted fifth on Saturday.

I think that the doctor THINKING that’s what it is but not knowing is what got them in trouble the fist time. Maybe thay need a second opinion.

  50. Comment posted by Athena on July 5, 2008 at 11:11 pm (#750959)

I saw that, too, Lunk. If Beltran’s bat doesn’t heat up he’s likely to move him to 2. He has said that he likes to put struggling hitters there. They see more fast balls.

All I’m saying is that… after this season, I’m never trusting the best-case-scenario of the Mets medical staff again.

If a doctor for the Mets says a dude has a hangnail, it probably means he’ll be dead in a fortnight.

  55. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 5, 2008 at 11:13 pm (#750963)

where was that from? it’s funny b/c it sounds like their point was that he was moved to the 5-hole on Sat. But clearly today was no different than any other day!

Well, if Beltran gets moved to 2nd, what are we looking at here:

    Jose
    Beltran
    Church
    Wright
    Delgado
    Easley
    Chavez/Castro
    Schneider/Tatis

Something like that? I would certainly move Wright to fourth. He’s the closest thing we have to a cleanup hitter now and it’ll give Church more RBI opportunities.

The alternate version, I think, would be:

    Jose
    Beltran
    Wright
    Church
    Easley
    Delgado
    Castro/Tatis
    Chavez/Schneider

  61. Comment posted by Athena on July 5, 2008 at 11:16 pm (#750967)

The problem with Alou in the 4 hole is that he really hasn’t been hitting for that much power in the last two years. Not enough for a cleanup hitter, at least.

  66. Comment posted by Doc believes! on July 5, 2008 at 11:18 pm (#750971)

    lol Mookie.

  67. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 5, 2008 at 11:19 pm (#750972)

The problem is that no one is a true 4 hitter on the team, but I don’t know that it’s such a big deal. Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Alou, Church is a great 1-5

  68. Comment posted by Doc believes! on July 5, 2008 at 11:20 pm (#750973)

524 SLG is enough to hit fourth.

  69. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 5, 2008 at 11:20 pm (#750974)

also, if you have 2 guys who hit for power ahead of the 4 spot, you don’t need your cleanup hitter to really be a cleanup hitter

  70. Comment posted by Doc believes! on July 5, 2008 at 11:21 pm (#750975)

And speed. Singles would score a lot of runs from the cleanup spot.

I dunno. One of the reasons that Beltran and Wright would be great in the 2 and 3 holes is that when they don’t hit, they walk. It would be nice for the 4th place guy to have a chance to clear the bases. Big innings are nice.

  74. Comment posted by lucienlc on July 5, 2008 at 11:24 pm (#750978)

I’m not buying what the Mets are selling on Church.

I feel the same way… except that Church did say that he has a long history of migraines, and that this thing today behaved precisely like all the migraines he used to have before the concussions.

Of course, that makes it worse that he had the concussions. Feh.

I had to go off for a few minutes. Did Maine say anything about his forearm cramp?

  75. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 5, 2008 at 11:24 pm (#750979)

thats true lunk. my caveat to my proposal is that alou GIDP a lot, which would be tough with all the walking CB and DW do

This trip for the 15-day disabled list cuts a little deeper for Troy Tulowitzki and the Colorado Rockies.

Just three weeks after returning from a torn thigh tendon that cost him 46 games, the Rockies’ enigmatic shortstop sliced his right palm when he pounded his maple bat into the ground in frustration and it shattered. The accident occurred Friday night after he was replaced by Omar Quintanilla in the seventh inning.

    Troy Tulowitzki

    Tulowitzki

“Yeah, it’s tougher to take,” Tulowitzki said Saturday of his return to the DL. “The other injury was baseball-related. You’re out there on the field, going all out. And this one’s kind of a stupid injury that I could have prevented.”

Maple bats are the subject of a major league investigation because of their tendency to shatter when they break, unlike the softer ash bats, which usually just crack.

“I don’t think that matters. I think ash would have done the same thing,” he said.

“I looked at the cut and it looked pretty bad,” added Tulowitzki, who expects to be out two weeks. “It was a scary moment.”

Tulowitzki required 16 stitches, but doctors told him the shards of wood that sliced into his right hand didn’t damage any tendons or nerves, he said.

  83. Comment posted by mookie03 on July 5, 2008 at 11:26 pm (#750985)

I also don’t think you can put DW in the 4 hole with how badly he is struggling w/ RISP. There aren’t that many solid options

  85. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on July 5, 2008 at 11:28 pm (#750986)

Well, that’s the problem, isn’t it, Mook? We don’t have someone that really fits in the 4 hole. Right now, Wright has the most power on the team, in my opinion. And Church works better as a 3 or a 5.

Mitchell Boggs can only hope he never sees another pitching line like he put up Thursday night. With the New York Mets in St. Louis winding up a four-game series, Boggs took his first major-league shellacking after putting up an impressive 3-0 record for the Cardinals.

But reality — not to mention 10 hits and 11 runs — slapped Boggs right in the kisser. He’s in the show. He’s a good pitcher. He’s facing good hitters. On some days, nothing seems to work right.

Thursday was that day for Boggs, the right-hander who is still in the infancy of his big league career.

What Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is looking for now is Boggs’ reaction to his worst performance so far. It was horrendous. There is no way to sugarcoat the numbers: six innings, 10 hits, 11 runs – all earned – with six walks and an error. His.

The Mets were up 9-0 after three innings. They got three runs in the first, six in the third and added two in the sixth, Boggs’ final inning. Boggs’ ERA went from a respectable 4.37 to 6.59.

By leaving Boggs on the mound to take his lumps, the 24-year-old pitcher from Dalton gave the bullpen three innings of relief. Instead of relievers working six innings, R. Villone and Jason Isringhausen combined for three hitless innings.

    From my local paper.

The team is full of 2, 3 and 5 guys. But I think lineups are a bit overrated. I mean, yes, the problem with the entire team is the lack of that big bat (which del was supposed to be), but I don’t think it would kill the team to put a guy like alou in the 4 hole.

    What’s wrong with Yankees’ fans:

Without a doubt, Moose deserves to be on the Al All-Star rotation, hands down, Also, Mariano Rivera should be the Al Closer. Other Yankees players that deserved to be on the All-Stars were Bobby Abreu, but, I guess it was a case of still more discrimination against New York Yankees players, freaking ridiculous.

I like this for the top 4:

    Reyes
    Wright
    Beltran
    Church

Good speed in the top 3 and 2 switch hitters. Wright has the best OBP and OPS, so bat him 2nd.
Church has the best SLG and 2nd best OPS and not as much speed as DW so bat him 4th.
