    Horribly managed inning by Manuel.

Isn’t that basically every inning? Tell me how that inning was different than most?

    Dammit.

It all goes back to Manuel letting Santana swing with the count 2-0.

Red light and that’s the third run.

  17. Comment posted by Mak on July 4, 2008 at 9:41 pm (#750232)

Trade Santana to a team that will score runs for him. This is embarassing.

  18. Comment posted by DL on July 4, 2008 at 9:41 pm (#750233)

This team lacks something. I don’t know what it is, but it is full of guys who do not take charge of the oppotunities given to them. How many guys did we leave in scoring position throughout this game???

  24. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on July 4, 2008 at 9:46 pm (#750239)

This Mets lacks enough healthy starting-quality position players in their prime. No more, no less.

They got three… maybe four… of those players when you’re supposed to have seven or eight of those players.

  25. Comment posted by DL on July 4, 2008 at 9:46 pm (#750240)

just unbelievable, phillies with RISP: 3-4, us: teh suck

  26. Comment posted by Hubie on July 4, 2008 at 9:46 pm (#750241)

When your 3/4/5 hitters look lethargic as they did tonight, you are not going to win too many ball games. Unfortunately, Delgado never gets a big late inning hit and they have been few and far between for Wright and Beltran this year, particularly Wright.

I was away from the computer so couldn’t say anything, but damn, that was some stupid decision-making at the end of the game. Pinch-hitting Church and Marlon, then no double switching, nor leaving Santana in…if you’re gonna take Santana out, why the hell not double switch???

And then the game-winning pitch…why the hell do you call a fastball there? They had him with 2 strikes after a high fastball, everyone in the ballpark was thinking changeup except for Schneider and Victorino, some freaking how and he turns on it. Give me a break. This team plays dumb and lacks confidence. Willie’s ghost lingers.

  28. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on July 4, 2008 at 9:50 pm (#750243)

Terrible managing, sure, but decent hitting would’ve more than made up for it. Great start by Santana. Santana’s the Mantana, there’s no doubt about that.

    That’s about it, though.

  29. Comment posted by Tim in LA on July 4, 2008 at 9:52 pm (#750244)

Santana would be a frontrunner for another Cy Young if he had any run support.

  30. Comment posted by MetsFanSince71 on July 4, 2008 at 9:54 pm (#750245)

    This team lacks something.

It lacks power hitters and clutch hitters….and most of all, heart.

  31. Comment posted by MetsFanSince71 on July 4, 2008 at 9:55 pm (#750246)

I am soooooooo looking forward to the new manager in 2009

  32. Comment posted by MetsFanSince71 on July 4, 2008 at 9:56 pm (#750247)

these guys are playing with no more sense of urgency in big games for Manuel than they did for Randolph

  33. Comment posted by Tim in LA on July 4, 2008 at 9:59 pm (#750248)

I’m telling you, it’s not a lack of urgency, I don’t know what you’re watching — it’s too much urgency. They have no faith in themselves. They press in big spots, get all tight, and fail to come through. They want to win, they just don’t think they can, and so they don’t. The only guy who looks like he doesn’t really care is Delgado. But everyone else is just frustrated and pressing.

  34. Comment posted by MetsFanSince71 on July 4, 2008 at 9:59 pm (#750249)

on a brighter note, the Yankees are 9 games out :)

  35. Comment posted by MetsFanSince71 on July 4, 2008 at 10:01 pm (#750250)

oh well, back to the Twilight Zone marathon

  36. Comment posted by littlefallsmets on July 4, 2008 at 10:03 pm (#750251)

Maybe they can’t play with a sense of urgency, though. Maybe they’re on the whole just not that good.

    Reyes, Wright, Beltran, maybe Church.

Santana, improving Pelfrey, sometimes Maine, sometimes Perez.

Wagner, Feliciano, sometimes Heilman, sometimes Sanchez, improving Smith, Schoeneweis so far.

Chavez, Castro and Easley are all good bench guys who don’t hold up over the long haul starting.

So half a team of yeses and maybes and half a team of utter dross.

That kind of team can’t play consistently enough to play with a sense of urgency. If the yeses and maybes are having hot streaks, they win.

    If not, they lose.

The amazing thing is that this imbecile is still a superior manager to Willie Randolph. Willie starts Schnieder in this game, that double doesn’t happen (it’s a safe bet since he has something like 5 XBH this year) and the Phillies don’t have to bat at the top of the 9th. And he manages the bullpen and the clubhouse better than Willie.

But still…Church batting for Castro so that Marlon can bat for Aguila??? Sanchez pitching the 9th with Santana at 90 some odd, two elite lefties due to bat, Santana dominating (of the 4 hits in the 6th, one was a can of corn for Aguila and 2 were dribblers that found holes–there was one hard-hit ball that inning), and the pitcher due at bat first in the 10th>??

And he earlier joked about not knowing who Valentino Pascucci is. (Omar is probably keeping him in the minors because he knows that he will rake lefties in the majors, and Omar will look foolish for waiting so long and because a bunch of bloggers had a better idea of how to run the franchise than he did. If Pascucci never gets his shot, Omar can still pompously look down at his advocates and pretend he knows better.

What a bunch of jokers! What a franchise!

Johan Santana again had nothing to show for a strong outing. Santana gave up two runs and six hits in eight innings. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner is 0-4 in his last six starts despite a 2.48 ERA in that span.

Watching BBTN to numb the pain…

The guy the Braves called up to take Francoeur’s place swung at a pitch that hit him in the leg. Are we sure they didn’t just slap a disguise on Frenchy?

  40. Comment posted by Chaucer on July 4, 2008 at 10:27 pm (#750255)

We blew a seven game lead last year with less time to play than remains here. I don’t see anyone in the NL east as a lock for anything, except for perhaps the Gnats.

Haha, Jessica. I can’t watch any baseball news after a loss these days.

At least you missed Olney trying to convince us that Johan turns into a pumpkin after 60 pitches.

I thought Vina of all people calling out Reyes was rather amusing in a pathetic sort of way. (Please tell me someone here remembers what Tim told us about Vina)

  45. Comment posted by Athena on July 4, 2008 at 11:06 pm (#750260)

I don’t remember, Jessica. What did Tim say?

  46. Comment posted by Jessica on July 4, 2008 at 11:21 pm (#750261)

If I’m remembering correctly, while Vina was a Cardinal, he slept with a teammate’s wife.

Maybe Beltran can pitch. Because his eye is very similar to Santana’s. Looking at easy curveballs right down the middle and SWINGING at the high fastball to end the inning. I’m sorry. Are we interrupting his train of thought by having him bat? He seems completely disengaged from the game. My nickname for him is I.E for the Inning Ender.

    Drives me crazy.
