Well, it was a general tryout for all the teams in the league. If he made it, it was with another team.

Castillo played as a defensive replacement on Wednesday, so his 15-day stint will begin today. Damion Easley will see the majority of time in his absence. RHP Carlos Muniz is also expected to be sent to Triple-A, with OF Chris Aguila and 2B Argenis Reyes expected to be promoted from the minor leagues.

  77. Comment posted by Grand Inquisitor Ramon on July 3, 2008 at 3:56 pm (#749816)

Back on April 22, I wrote a post titled “Nasty Nate McLouth”, dissecting the hot start of the Pirates outfielder. He had a ridiculously high BABIP at the time which led to quite the inflated slash line. Additionally, while sustaining a very similar walk rate he had drastically reduced his strikeout percentage. Here are some of his numbers at the time of the first post and his overall numbers as we speak:

    Apr 22: .403 BABIP, .375/.444/.639, 1.082 OPS, 12.5 K%
    Today: .288 BABIP, .281/.361/.523, .885 OPS, 13.8 K%

As expected, his BABIP dropped significantly, and his slash line fell as a result. His strikeout rate has increased a bit but the 13.8% is still much lower than the 23.4% of last year. Speaking of the 2007 season, McLouth now has virtually the same amount of at-bats this year as last. Here are his numbers from the last two years:

    2007: 85-329, 48 1B, 21 2B, 3 3B, 13 HR, 39 BB, 77 K, .258/.351/.489
    2008: 92-327, 46 1B, 28 2B, 3 3B, 15 HR, 34 BB, 45 K, .281/.362/.523

Things appear very similar with the exception of the strikeouts and added power; McLouth’s increase in doubles and home runs has led to not only the higher batting average but the higher slugging percentage as well. His ISO in 2007 was .201 compared to the .242 so far this year. Unfortunately, or fortunately if you are a Pirates fan, he actually gets lost in the shuffle a bit because the entire Bucs outfield is producing at a high level.

Amongst NL outfielders, McLouth ranks 8th in WPA (1.54) and 7th in WPA/LI (1.56). Jason Bay and Xavier Nady rank ahead of him in both areas. McLouth’s 22.58 BRAA and 2.24 REW rank third amongst NL outfielders, though, higher than both of his teammates. He has cooled off quite a bit since riding the coattails of a 19-game hitting streak early in the season but he is still producing at a high level; or at least much higher than we might have expected entering the season. I also would not be surprised if he has earned his first All-Star berth given his solid numbers and the fact that surprising players make good stories.

  78. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on July 3, 2008 at 4:00 pm (#749817)

McLouth is coming down to earth. I wouldn’t be surprised if his average ends up in the .260-.270 ranger and he barely makes it to 20 homeruns.

  79. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on July 3, 2008 at 4:02 pm (#749818)

    McLouth’s OPS per month:

    April: 1.083
    May: .920
    June: .621

That’s a downward spiral if I ever saw one. In addition, his batting average has gone:

    April: .342
    May: .279
    June: .214

Reyes-Dos… nice call up to give a shot, at least he’s young enough where the best out of him might be yet to come.

Christina Aguilera… not so much but… I mean, the cupboard is so bare at AAA for position players that why not?

What’s funny is, though, Andy Hernandy is now officially the only everyday player at AAA under the age of 29.

  81. Comment posted by Grand Inquisitor Ramon on July 3, 2008 at 4:04 pm (#749820)

Wow, Rene, that is a downward spiral indeed.

  82. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on July 3, 2008 at 4:05 pm (#749821)

I love your stat cherry picking, lfm. I suppose Machado and Molina don’t “count” because they don’t have enough at bats to be considered “starters”.

  83. Comment posted by Grand Inquisitor Ramon on July 3, 2008 at 4:07 pm (#749822)

LFM, is the ultimate cherrypicker. He should join the union in California…

  84. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on July 3, 2008 at 4:09 pm (#749823)

Ramon, this is why I don’t believe in McClouth’s power: he already has more major league homeruns than he has minor league homeruns…. in half the at bats. Now, if he came up from the minors when he was, say, 22 and developed power at the major league level, I’d understand. But he had over 400 plate appearances in the minors when he was 23 and hit a total of 5 homeruns and only 20 doubles. (.401 slugging).

Looks like it’s just you and me, Ramon. Everyone else is probably eating hot dogs as we speak.

Of the names I usually see in the minor league recap box score? Sure. That’s why I said “everyday player” as opposed to “position player” or what not.

    Look:

When there were 24 teams, there were 600 major leaguers and 600 AAA players.

Nowadays there are 30 teams, 750 MLB players and 750 AAA players and… moreover… there’s much better chances for AAAA type guys to play in the East Asian or Latin American leagues and be starters or stars.

So if you wanna say that even 50 players are in the international leagues instead of stewing in AAA…

That means 350 players… or half of the AAA rosters… are guys who wouldn’t be at that level if not for expansion spiralling out of control.

Now, more than ever, you gotta look at AAA numbers in a very particular sort of way to make any sense of them.

A twenty-five year old’s numbers mean a lot more than a thirty-year old’s who has just been lingering there for so long that they’ve perfected hitting flawed straight-ball AAA pitching.

Ummmmmmmm…. not that you’re correct considering you’re ignoring expanded scouting and a much larger player base…. what’s your point?

Also, I count 4 members of N.O.’s regular starting lineup to be under 29. That’s 50% if you understand math.

I’m mostly just saying “here is why we can’t be depending on AAA stats for career organizational filler type”… i.e. why it is important to point out the ages of the guys at AAA and take them heavily into account.

Why only four years of age at AAA could mean volumes of difference in terms of the potential of a player hanging around on the New Orleans squad.

Expanded international scouting probably ameliorates the effects of what I’m talking about, yeah, but… I’m not sure how much.

Such a vast number of American AND International guys wither on the vine in single-A-and-lower leagues that you have to wonder how much of the effect actually “trickles-up” to the high minor league talent pools.

Statistically, you have to image the same percentage make it to the AAA level. And scouting continues to expand whereas expansion seems to have fallen into a lull over the last decade. We’re now scouting Europe and Australia and scouting Asia and South America more diligently than ever.

And for AAA organizational filler, all you can take into account is their AAA stats. If they had decent MLB stats, they wouldn’t be in AAA. That’s the problem with organizational filler.

This weekend Omar’s Latinas invade CBP. Philadelphia fans already have the broom out. Should be an enjoyable weekend.

Lunk, that’s all I’m saying, really.

When all these people are waving a flag for Pascucci’s numbers or Armas’s numbers or whatever, saying “look at those AAA numbers, he’d be helping this club!”…

I just want people to remember that… if any front-office in baseball thought that they could replicate those numbers at a major league level against major league talent, they wouldn’t have signed on to play at New Orleans.

It’s one thing when you’re a prospect or you’re young enough to still be learning… but if you’re 29 and no one took you for their bench outta the spring, the vast odds say that this is not a major league talent.

The vast odds say that this is a dude accumulating empty numbers against guys who weren’t good enough to make a 25-man roster either.

You guys might luck out and not have to face the youngster Mitchell Boggs tonight…..we have a bit of a tempest problem today….

Boggs has okay stuff, he walks to many and is not a strikeout pitcher….he let’s ya put it in play.
He’s a right hander and he is Lily white.
