Tony Armas, Jr. vs Todd Wellemeyer
(Baseball-Reference.com Preview)
Eric Simon has far too much time on his hands. He sleeps upside-down, keeps people as pets, and can be found on the internets at
Amazin' Avenue or bothered directly at
eric@metsgeek.com.
oh for chrissakes

He does seem to have better ideas, Danny. I don’t disagree with that. He’s not wed to the the dame starting line-up everyday. Which allows him to rest players and reward good play. It’s been fun to watch and a big difference from Willie.
I just don’t believe that the players were struggling because they didn’t like Willie. So the player might be doing better because he gets more rest or is properly platooned. But not because he’s happy that Willie is gone.
I will also add that he handles the media better than Willie.
And his BP management and organization are superior.
Wow, I amde the argument about Delgado alone and it has ballooned into several players????
Haha, Mak! He needs a cup of Earl Grey. Hot.
100% agree, Athena. Great read IMO
Ramon, I think there was a general feeling by some that Willie had lost the team, or that guys didn’t like/respect him. I don’t think Athena is taking you to task.
Oh. Sorry Ramon. Let me re-phrase.
I don’t believe that Delgado was struggling because he didn’t like Willie. He might be doing better because he gets more rest or is properly platooned. But not because he’s happy that Willie is gone.
i agree 100% athena. i think jerry is trying very hard to do things differently from willie partly to separate himself from willie and partly b/c it’s quite clear whatever they’ve been doing hasn’t worked.
Jerry is much more of a fan’s manager. I like him, but I think the Mets could’ve achieved this same result by keeping Willie (1 game under .500?!)
Probably, but long-term, I think Jerry’s tweaks are worth a couple of games. And that may prove important (hopefully)
I think the whole “the players weren’t playing for Willie” argument is a bit of a strawman that many more sympathetic fans construct to easily discredit the idea that change was needed. Noone that I know argued that Willie lost the clubhouse’s total respect. I think the argument people were making was that a change was needed to send a message to the rest of the club, fans, and media.
goodnight everyone
Thanks, Sweetie!
That’s true, Ramon. (Despite my somewhat snarky response.) I had already forgotten how we got on the topic. I was really focusing on Mookie’s comment. I wasn’t trying to single you out. Sorry.
True, girls get on the bus! ;)
Um…but he isn’t doing any better since Willie left. That was kind of the point behind Danny’s usage of the statistics to show he had a roughly similar OPS before and after the June 18 firing.
Right now I think the difference would have been 1 game one way or the other. The problem is that A.) that difference could add up and B.) we could lose a playoff birth by 1 game AGAIN this season.
Night Zodder
Fair point, Ramon.
hope so, Danny! I have been very unhappy w/ the offense and defense so far, esp this week, but it’s too soon to judge. Pitching looks good though, i love the new pitching coach (not too soon to judge!) ;)
Yea, i think you are right Ramon. I think Willie had to go not necessarily b/c of his managing but b/c of the circus they created about it - it was killing the team, the fans, the media.
Good night, Zod.
I started it!! sorry guys ;)
:-)
mookie’s such a rabble rouser.
Yup. A real troublemaker.
that’s me, danny!
hahahaha
pedro’s gonna have a good start tomorrow, guys. I’m benching him in my FBB team just to make sure. It worked with Lohse yesterday! (that was a mistake, i didn’t realize they were playing at 7)
Good thinking, Mookie.
We’ll see if not tipping his changeup helps.
if he can manage to avoid tipping his changeup, I think it’ll help. But i guess it depends how long it takes him to make the adjustment
Alright my fellow Geeks. Time for some sleepy. Night to all!
