Eric Simon has far too much time on his hands. He sleeps upside-down, keeps people as pets, and can be found on the internets at Amazin' Avenue or bothered directly at eric@metsgeek.com.
Oh, my bad, I clicked and pasted a chapter from my dissertation. I am sorry, please disregard that post.
A Metsblog reader, Jeff H., sent in the following statistic regarding the Mets ultimately losing after they had been ahead in a game:
“Right now they are 20-18. Of those 18 losses, 9 came in games where they were winning. Of those 9 losses, Heilman appeared in 6.”
“Had they managed to emerge with wins in roughly half of those 9 come-from-ahead defeats, their record would be around 24-14 or 25-13 and we’d have very little to complain about.”

We were just talking about that quote, Ramon. We agreed: that sucks.

If I had time, I would go through the game logs and see what role Heilman played in those losses. Otherwise, it’s an interesting factoid but I don’t know exactly what to make of it.
Rene, I think you made a point that Heilman last year had a stat that was second worse to Mota’s. Wasn’t it a stat that showed he blew more leads or tied games than anyone else in the pen during 2007?

Wasn’t me. I was a fan of Heilman’s coming into this season.
The who was it? Also, I was a big fan of his too. I stil think he has great stuff, I don’t know what his issue is though.

I definitely think he has great stuff and had been our best reliever over the last three seasons. But, yeah, something’s up with him. I don’t know if it’s just confidence…. but he’s just not quite there.
I hope Smith and Show can carry the load until then. But man, alot of people have grilled the Mets for not mixing things up and giving some of their younger less proven kids a chance–and the pen seems like a perfect target for such criticisms.

I dunno. Omar’s been very open minded about letting unprovens get a chance in the pen. Look at Pedro2, Heilman, Smith. The problem is, he has some guys he knows are good in there who just aren’t getting the job done. (Sosa, for instance, and Heilman). But he got rid of Sosa so he has to be given credit for that.
Heilman’s tougher because he has great streaks of pitching and then screws the pooch for a couple straight. It’s hard to know if he’s snapping out of it.
Of those 3, the one who really sticks out is Smith. But Felciano and Heilman were given the shot when we had noone in 2006 and had to construct a bullpen from scratch.

He could have easily gone out and signed someone. Someone veteran and “proven”. One thing I appreciate about Omar is that he’s not big on the “proven reliever”.
