Nelson Figueroa vs Odalis Perez

Eric Simon has far too much time on his hands. He sleeps upside-down, keeps people as pets, and can be found on the internets at Amazin' Avenue or bothered directly at eric@metsgeek.com.

Who do I have to pay off to acquire the ability to electroshock Willie every time he wants to put Jorge Sosa into a winnable game and he’s allowed to face a lefty?

  2. Comment posted by Danny on May 12, 2008 at 10:19 pm (#690330)

    That God dude?

  3. Comment posted by metswin2008 on May 12, 2008 at 10:19 pm (#690331)

I think more Sosa but yeah Figgy didnt help too much. By the time Sosa came in we kinda just went into a prevent defense, lol

  4. Comment posted by metswin2008 on May 12, 2008 at 10:20 pm (#690332)

    That God Dude, lol.
Thats who I blame for the 2006 NLCS, LOL

If Omar is going to keep Sosa on the roster that’s exactly the place where Willie is going to use him - down 3 or more early enough in the game that you hope to get two innings out of him.

Our pen had pitched 9 innings in two days coming into tonight - and had to cover 4 more thanks to Figgy’s rough outing.

Thinking of picking up Moises. Dude is on fire. I think if he can stay healthy he has a shot at batting close to .350. Unbelievable

The Beltran pitch was a strike in “six-run game and thirty-six windchill” land

  17. Comment posted by Danny on May 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm (#690342)

    LOL Simons

Sosa needs to get in line

  18. Comment posted by metswin2008 on May 12, 2008 at 10:25 pm (#690343)

Yea but that is why I have to scratch my head at amazement when Willie puts Wagner in. Well, I mean I shouldnt be shocked but Willie WTF?

  19. Comment posted by Danny on May 12, 2008 at 10:26 pm (#690344)

Sosa can’t pitch multiple effective innings at a time though. He’s not capable this year. When Sosa gets in a rut like this, it takes him a year to get out of it.

    Cut bait now.

Zany game. Take out the two solo homers and the team scores two runs on 10 hits / 4 walks. Boooo.

  22. Comment posted by cp on May 12, 2008 at 10:26 pm (#690346)

Mets gave Figgy three leads tonight and he couldn’t hold any of them for a single inning, that probably takes some toll on an offense.

It’s over!!! Only 21 hours till we get another crack at ‘em.

HAHA, yeah Ramon. I made a reference to Paula Abdul from one your posts. They way you ended it reminded me of Opposites Attract.

Oh, the two steps foward, two steps back line I suppose? I loved that video. I had supermad crush on Paula Abdul back in those days before she got old and batshit crazy.

  73. Comment posted by Danny on May 12, 2008 at 11:37 pm (#690397)

Abdul was hot back in the day. I will strike down upon anyone with a great fury who doth protest that fact.

abdul is still sexy in a milf way. that one dude from idol certainly agrees.

ps. did we cut sosa yet

  80. Comment posted by The Chinatown Chicken on May 13, 2008 at 12:02 am (#690404)

Adbul is kind of batty though. I’d still do her, but some of the stuff she says is too crazy for words.

We didn’t cut Sosa yet from what I know.

  81. Comment posted by DoctorK16 on May 13, 2008 at 12:04 am (#690405)

  83. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:10 am (#690407)

So, danny. What do you think about the team? Pretty frustrating isn’t it?

It’s really frustrating that we can’t sustain good play for longer than a couple of games at a time.

  84. Comment posted by The Chinatown Chicken on May 13, 2008 at 12:13 am (#690408)

It’s really frustrating that we can’t sustain good play for longer than a couple of games at a time.

Yup. Especially against this caliber of competition. I can’t wait for Pedro to get healthy so we can do something with the rotation and pen by moving Figueroa to longman duties and cutting Sosa for starters.

  85. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:15 am (#690409)

I hope we don’t cut Figueroa. He’s absolutely perfect for the utility/long man role in the pen. Absolute rubber arm. Will take the ball everyday. Awesome the first time through the order.

  86. Comment posted by DoctorK16 on May 13, 2008 at 12:19 am (#690410)

Who else goes to make room for figgy. show?

  87. Comment posted by The Chinatown Chicken on May 13, 2008 at 12:21 am (#690411)

The problem is that Show is actually growing on me. So, what do we do because I want Wise and Smith in the pen with Figgy too? It might not be a bad thing to DL Sanchez until he regains his velocity with some more throwing…

  88. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:21 am (#690412)

Ha, I haven’t figured that part out, yet.

  89. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:23 am (#690413)

The first move is to cut Sosa immediately. Keep Figs in the 5th spot until Pedro comes back.

    Reassess then.

  90. Comment posted by sarah on May 13, 2008 at 12:25 am (#690414)

Awesome the first time through the order.

Good point. I’d be happy substituting Figueroa for Sosa. If they make a decision based on pitching performance to date they absolutely can’t cut Smith, at least not yet. But who ever said these decisions were made based on what makes sense!

  91. Comment posted by The Chinatown Chicken on May 13, 2008 at 12:26 am (#690415)

Sosa has to go first, but then someone in the pen will have to pitch his innings before Figueroa can be moved there to replace him once Pedro comes back.

  92. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:29 am (#690417)

Yeah, we DO need a rubber arm that can go multiple innings in the pen. I just think that we can get away with not having one for a couple of weeks. Smith might be the odd man out when Pedro comes back if everyone is performing up to their potential and is healthy.

That’s just the way it goes.

    http://mets.lohudblogs.com/2008/05/12/nelson-doesnt-like-the-nationals/

Kevin Devaney back with one final update. Here’s what Nelson Figueroa said after tonight’s 10-4 loss to Washington, in response to what he said was “singing” and “chanting” from the Nationals dugout in the third inning:

“They were cheerleading in the dugout like a bunch softball girls. I’m a professional just like anybody else, so I take huge offense to that. If that’s what a last-place team needs to do to fire themself up, so be it. I think they need to show a little more class and professionalism. They won tonight but, in the long run, they are still who they are.

“Even for the manager and the coaching staff to let that stuff carry on, it’s truly unprofessional. That’s why they are who they are.”

Wow. I can’t remember standing in front of a professional athlete and hearing something like that.

When asked who the culprits were, Figueroa said “Don’t know. I don’t care.”

Whoever it is should probably expect a fastball at the chin over the next three days. Figueroa will make sure of that.

Maybe I’d care more about what Figgy thought if he were able to, you know, pitch well against that unprofessional last-place team.

  96. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:34 am (#690420)

Sarah, I don’t even want to think about the fan revolt if Smith gets demoted and Sosa blows up again at Shea.

    It will truly be ugly.

  97. Comment posted by sarah on May 13, 2008 at 12:36 am (#690421)

If everyone is healthy and performing up to their potential we can’t get annoyed over sending Smith down.

The problem will be if he continues to pitch well and gets sent down while other guys continue to be mediocre or bad.

The eventual decision should just be made based on whatever gives us the best bullpen. Obviously.

  98. Comment posted by The Chinatown Chicken on May 13, 2008 at 12:36 am (#690422)

What a bearleague thing to do. Its so funny because I remember when opposing teams gave the Mets shit for being too animated in their dugout when they were wining games last year.

  99. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:38 am (#690423)

Wow, Figs didn’t mince words there.

  100. Comment posted by sarah on May 13, 2008 at 12:39 am (#690424)

If that were to happen Sosa probably wouldn’t even be given an inch of breathing room. He’ll probably get booed with the first ball he throws out of the strike zone.

  101. Comment posted by The Chinatown Chicken on May 13, 2008 at 12:40 am (#690425)

I think Figgy let the Nationals clubhouse antics get to him last night and it just may have affected his performance. That’s not a very professional reaction to have, he shouldn’t have let it affect him so.

  102. Comment posted by sarah on May 13, 2008 at 12:45 am (#690426)

Maybe I’d care more about what Figgy thought if he were able to, you know, pitch well against that unprofessional last-place team.

His words aren’t going to carry very much weight after a performance like the one he gave tonight.

At least he’s not meant to be one of our top two pitchers, like, say Andy Pettite who went a whopping 4 innings tonight.

  103. Comment posted by Danny on May 13, 2008 at 12:48 am (#690427)

Alright everyone. I’m not a 4:30 AM guy like that crazy 2008 but I do have to get up at 6. Take care and the Mets will make us all a lot happier tomorrow.

    Night!

  104. Comment posted by DoctorK16 on May 13, 2008 at 1:03 am (#690428)

The Nats can do what ever they want in their dugout, they can break a New Orleans style band and play the Battle Hymn of the Republic if they want. Figgy needed to not walk guys and not hit three batters. Sour grapes.
