Pedro Martinez vs Rick VandenHurk
(Baseball-Reference.com Preview)
Eric Simon has far too much time on his hands. He sleeps upside-down, keeps people as pets, and can be found on the internets at
Amazin' Avenue or bothered directly at
eric@metsgeek.com.
As Marv Albert would say (as your watching and putting money into the Steinbrenner’s pockets)…
YES!
hahahaha. funny.
i still dont remember go jam lol, i’m sure i would if i saw it, i’ve seen that movie many many times
It’s at the end when one of the Olympic announcers throws away his impartiality and proclaims something like “Aww screw it, Go Jam!”
Fun Fact: My brother names all of his fantasy teams Cool Runnins.
that’s fabulous
the mets need to go get their buckingham palace n s**t
Well that sucked. Watched in a bar. Our offense past Beltran is an issue. Special shout out to Church for that ab he had in the 9th after Gregg couldn’t find the zone with Google Earth.
ahhhhh yes. now i remember. that’s great. thank you
Yeah that ab suck. I still like Church.
I’m ashamed to say the room got dusty for that part one time. I probably did it for a girl but still. I guess I just really loved The King and I.
What’s up Doc? Tough one tonight.
I’m good Danny. Any news on #45? I hope that’s just a tweak.
I said something similar (but a bit lower-tech) in my writeup over on MVN.
I’m still stunned and upset and waiting to wake up and find out this was all some seriously f**ked-up dream.
The confusing thing about that Church at-bat is that he has been so patient very other time. My theory is that he wanted to jump on a “get-me-over fastball” and got too excited.
Doc, Pedro told Burkhart that he heard a pop. He’s going to NY for an MRI tomorrow.
Chris says the pop thing might not be a huge deal, so let’s wait for the MRI results. It’s wait-and-see right now.
Another thing looks like Delgado has lost a lot of bat speed. He can’t hit the pitch inside or pitch above his thighs. I’m not encouraged by what I see from him right now.
So I guess now Ollie will be pitching the home opener on 5 days’ rest.
lmao danny. too funny
I said during the game thread Doc that I miss the Delgado that didn’t get beat by 90% of fastballs. He’s just late on everything. Even his hit tonight, he was a little late on it. He just squared it nicely that time.
I also gotta give to Gregg. It took alot of guts for him to throw a slider on an 0-0 count to Church after he walked the last two batters.
delgado looks done right now. (after 2 real games, but still)
i remain hopeful but its tough
It look like his spike caught in that crappy mound they have in Florida. If it popped he would have to be carried off, ala Jay Payton a few years back.
The thing is, Gregg didnt have his glasses cause the lens fell out. he couldnt see
damn that mound. what rotten luck
I like Ramon’s new name!
Are those actually prescription, Chris?
And they didn’t have a backup ready?
Damn budget cuts.
or assisted by two teammates while he hoped on his right leg off the field. I still stand by grade 1 sprain
i already forget what it stands for lol
Yeah Danny he can’t get around on them at all and he’s cheating big time too and missing a lot of slow stuff because of it. It was funny, the bar had him batting and Frank Thomas going up against Joba on the Yankee screen. Both bats looked slow compared to the heat. I guess an era is passing.
Gregg was squinting just getting the signs. He is near sighted apparrently
It’s probably lame but the late night Geek vent sessions always make the losses easier to swallow. I wake up mostly over the game and ready for redemption.
Me too Danny. I even feel better about the girl not calling me back after a few days.
It’s kind of sad but the sport waits for no one. Thomas and Delgado were both great power hitters that have nothing to be ashamed of.
I’m not feeling good about Delgado right now either.
You would think he would have a back up pair of glasses. He was flinching like someone who always wears them and has lost all ability to compensate without them.
Dep:
Have the
Audacity to
Hope!
or HAH!
yes, they do help for sure.
i’m over the L, concerned about the O, sad about PedrO!
ahhhhh yes. allright, i think i got it this time.
thanks HAH!
I’m not too concerned about the O. I actually think Church should be our 5 stick.
It’s not lame at all Danny. I know the only way I’ll be able to sleep at all tonight is if I spend a bit more time here with you guys.
BBTN starting now. Why do I subject myself?
Yeah, its tough. But we will all look back at this moment and see it as the beginning opportunit for Mike Pelfrey’s greatness.
Have I mentioned how ugly the new BBTN set is?
Ravech and Olney. Blech. At least no Kruk or EY.
I Have the Audacity to Hope. Catch the fever people!
church would look better than mr. deldone-o right now for sure.
I just feel like we’re at our breaking point with injuries already at game 2. we cant afford to lose another regular right now. no one!
take your vitamins!
Hahaha, Buster Olney is now telling us that the rotation is a major problem and all Mets fans should be horrified.
What a hack.
LOL Danny. Barack needs to give us the inspirational talk right about now after this game.
I miss Woodman and want to emulate his eternal positivity.
Danny, I would love to see Church get a real shot in the order. But I don’t know if Willie will ever move Delgado so low as 6th or even 7th.
Thanks for writing that Danny. I was about to flick the TV on that. Now I’ll skip it.
Damn, Jack Cust hit an absolute bomb against Dice-K.
YES WE CAN, DOC!
i cant watch BBTN. wont do it. sticking with As/BoSox
The Mets are too left handed. That was obvious when Pinto was mowing them down. The lineup as currently constructed has 2 hitter who is a better hitter against lefties than righties. Castillo and Wright.
Screw vitamins! Does anyone have Kirk Radmonski or Brian McNamee’s number on speed-dial in Omar’s office?
It was no accident that Gonzalez went with Pinto as his long reliever. With no Alou, the Mets are going to be particularly susceptible against lefties once you get past the top 4.
With Alou, the balance is much better. But it’s hard to count on Alou for anything.
LOL Bowa went apes**t against the ump. And the Giants actually scored a run for Matt Cain!
reyes is better too
beltran switches around from year 2 year, who knows with him
You know, everyone has injury potential issues due to age or fragility or whatever, but for the Mets, basically everything that could possibly go wrong for us has gone wrong.
Let’s get it out of the system now.
I would have no problems with
Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Beltran
Church
Delgado
Pagan
Schneider
Fook would disagree with this analysis, I would concurr as well.
all our old men are dead already lol
pedro, duque and alou could have their own wing at the hospital by now lol
I love that lineup but Willie would never do it. Well, he might do it, but that would mean that Delgado would be hitting like .200 in June.
So let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
LOL
A more balanced lineup would be:
Reyes
Church
Wright
Beltran
Delgado
Pagan
Castillo
Shneider
Pitcher
But I know people hate having Delgado in the 5 hole.
I don’t think Delgado is completely done yet. I think that he is a stubborn ass who learns nothing from game to game. Look at spring training. He’d go the other way, have success than try pulling everything come the next game. He could go 3 for 4 tomorrow with 2 opposite field doubles but then will forget all about the opposite field in the Atl series
The problem is the lineup as constructed counts on Alou a lot. Last year we were counting on getting the Delgado we knew and loved so it wasn’t a problem. But this year he came in as question mark so we needed more from Alou.
I also think that Delgado needs to have that Glavine moment. You know, when it finally dawns on him that the old way doesn’t work anymore and he has to do it differently from now on.
It’s scary how stubborn Delgado is, especially given his reputation for keeping the notebook on his at-bats. You’d think he would actually, I don’t know, use the notes to study from.
That was the residue of locking in lefthanded at catcher and RF, Alou’s health became more important. It’s so rare for a team to be too lefthanded. The Phillies just have to worry about splitting Utley and Howard, but most teams never even have that concern anywhere.
I think Reyes is getting to the point of career where he’s going to be a better lefty hitter. He just bats from that side so much more that his improvements are coming at faster pace from that side.
I mean, hasn;t he failed enough, Chris? What has to happen?
I’m down on him but I do love the dode.
I mean, it is so obvious to everyone that has seen Delgado the past season that he is still a good hitter when he consentrates on the opposite field.
I think the notes my hurt him, Jessica, in a weird way. He looks at the sequence but still applies his approach to his “old skills”. It would almost be better if he didn’t have data and just adjusted his approach based solely on his current skills.
I took Glavine awhile to finally admit that he was sucking. When he finally bought into that, he was able to buy himself a few more season of goodness *I refuse to use greatness*.
Some people are just too proud to change, especially when everyone tells them they must. I wonder if all of the NYC media hype on the issue hasn’t made Carlos a bit more defensive and stubborn about the issue of his approach and dimishing skills than he’d have been in a smaller market environment.
I think at this rate, he wouldn’t be able to own Jorge SOsa anymore
For all we know too is that Hojo and Delgado may be working on stuff. I mean, it takes weeks to start seeing changes if they make adjustments to his swing. I think he needs a lighter bat too
Delgado still swings an oak tree.
Last year we thought Paulie would not suck with the bat. We didn’t have any the same hope with Mr. Defense.
I’m just pissed to see this happen to Carlos. I have always been a fan of his from afar and wish he was having success, not just because he is a met but because he is a quality person with his charitable ways
I just keep remembering articles on how Delgado would contentiously dismiss any suggestion by NY reporters that his skills are diminishing and that as a result he’d have to adapt a new approach to this newfound reality. I hope he changes his mind on the matter.
I think Schneider has looked really good at the plate so far. He takes pitches, takes walks, takes good swings against lefties and generally is a tough out. And Schneider plays HARD. I like him a lot.
I thought Paulie would suck with the bat. I fucking hated him then and I hate him now. I know it was a joke back then whenever I said something, he did good but I really never liked him and wish we never made that trade.
I agree Carlos Delgado the person seems a really good guy.
I like snide alot. I can see why he was suck a fan favorite. He does bring an intangible to the game that I can’t dismiss. I was scared going into the season about his inability to hit but I like his approach and I think he could have a good year
Michel will be up here showcasing his poor man Olmedo Saenz like skills
At least some good news, Lute Olson says that Kevin O’Niell won’t return as coach.
I always wanted to claim that Schneider was a better hitter than his stats indicated, but I knew no one would buy it.
Even the day of the Milledge trade, I said that in a vacuum I really liked both Schneider and Church. I don’t understand the trade, but I always liked those guys, Church was criminally mishandled by the Nationals.
I like Church too. He’ll do fine for us as well.
All right, I’m going to try and get some sleep before my early-morning class. Night, everyone!
*prays to the hamstring gods*
Night Jessica
Night Jessica. Night all.
May we win 8 to 3 tomorrow
Night Chris
What was the deal with Church in Washington. I know he and Windmill butted heads a bit last year. Was it just a case of the new braintrust not liking a guy they inherited.
Night guys.
I’m not really sure. Windmill actually gave him more of a chance than anybody else ever did. I think Church and Frank Robinson were oil and vinegar for some reason. It’s hard to say, Doc.
These things aren’t broken down and over-saturated with coverage like the NY teams (fortunately).
I forget the Post and Times actually cover other things besides sports. Frank is a really old school dude, ala Sweet Lou so it could have been anything anyway. Night time for rest.
Night everybody. I need to turn in myself.
