    a cool runnings reference?

As Marv Albert would say (as your watching and putting money into the Steinbrenner’s pockets)…

    YES!

It’s at the end when one of the Olympic announcers throws away his impartiality and proclaims something like “Aww screw it, Go Jam!”

Well that sucked. Watched in a bar. Our offense past Beltran is an issue. Special shout out to Church for that ab he had in the 9th after Gregg couldn’t find the zone with Google Earth.

I’m ashamed to say the room got dusty for that part one time. I probably did it for a girl but still. I guess I just really loved The King and I.

What’s up Doc? Tough one tonight.

I said something similar (but a bit lower-tech) in my writeup over on MVN.

I’m still stunned and upset and waiting to wake up and find out this was all some seriously f**ked-up dream.

  16. Comment posted by Danny on April 1, 2008 at 11:55 pm (#642198)

The confusing thing about that Church at-bat is that he has been so patient very other time. My theory is that he wanted to jump on a “get-me-over fastball” and got too excited.

  17. Comment posted by Danny on April 1, 2008 at 11:56 pm (#642199)

Doc, Pedro told Burkhart that he heard a pop. He’s going to NY for an MRI tomorrow.

Chris says the pop thing might not be a huge deal, so let’s wait for the MRI results. It’s wait-and-see right now.

  18. Comment posted by DoctorK16 on April 1, 2008 at 11:56 pm (#642200)

Another thing looks like Delgado has lost a lot of bat speed. He can’t hit the pitch inside or pitch above his thighs. I’m not encouraged by what I see from him right now.

I said during the game thread Doc that I miss the Delgado that didn’t get beat by 90% of fastballs. He’s just late on everything. Even his hit tonight, he was a little late on it. He just squared it nicely that time.

  24. Comment posted by HAH! on April 1, 2008 at 11:58 pm (#642204)

I also gotta give to Gregg. It took alot of guts for him to throw a slider on an 0-0 count to Church after he walked the last two batters.

Yeah Danny he can’t get around on them at all and he’s cheating big time too and missing a lot of slow stuff because of it. It was funny, the bar had him batting and Frank Thomas going up against Joba on the Yankee screen. Both bats looked slow compared to the heat. I guess an era is passing.

It’s kind of sad but the sport waits for no one. Thomas and Delgado were both great power hitters that have nothing to be ashamed of.

I’m not feeling good about Delgado right now either.

The Mets are too left handed. That was obvious when Pinto was mowing them down. The lineup as currently constructed has 2 hitter who is a better hitter against lefties than righties. Castillo and Wright.

  71. Comment posted by Danny on April 2, 2008 at 12:12 am (#642237)

It was no accident that Gonzalez went with Pinto as his long reliever. With no Alou, the Mets are going to be particularly susceptible against lefties once you get past the top 4.

With Alou, the balance is much better. But it’s hard to count on Alou for anything.

    Church
    Delgado
    Pagan
    Schneider

I love that lineup but Willie would never do it. Well, he might do it, but that would mean that Delgado would be hitting like .200 in June.

So let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

A more balanced lineup would be:

    Reyes
    Church
    Wright
    Beltran
    Delgado
    Pagan
    Castillo
    Shneider
    Pitcher

But I know people hate having Delgado in the 5 hole.

I don’t think Delgado is completely done yet. I think that he is a stubborn ass who learns nothing from game to game. Look at spring training. He’d go the other way, have success than try pulling everything come the next game. He could go 3 for 4 tomorrow with 2 opposite field doubles but then will forget all about the opposite field in the Atl series

  87. Comment posted by DoctorK16 on April 2, 2008 at 12:18 am (#642248)

The problem is the lineup as constructed counts on Alou a lot. Last year we were counting on getting the Delgado we knew and loved so it wasn’t a problem. But this year he came in as question mark so we needed more from Alou.

  89. Comment posted by Chris in GA on April 2, 2008 at 12:20 am (#642249)

I also think that Delgado needs to have that Glavine moment. You know, when it finally dawns on him that the old way doesn’t work anymore and he has to do it differently from now on.

  90. Gravatar
  91. Comment posted by Jessica on April 2, 2008 at 12:20 am (#642250)

It’s scary how stubborn Delgado is, especially given his reputation for keeping the notebook on his at-bats. You’d think he would actually, I don’t know, use the notes to study from.

  92. Comment posted by Danny on April 2, 2008 at 12:21 am (#642251)

That was the residue of locking in lefthanded at catcher and RF, Alou’s health became more important. It’s so rare for a team to be too lefthanded. The Phillies just have to worry about splitting Utley and Howard, but most teams never even have that concern anywhere.

  93. Comment posted by DoctorK16 on April 2, 2008 at 12:21 am (#642252)

    reyes is better too

I think Reyes is getting to the point of career where he’s going to be a better lefty hitter. He just bats from that side so much more that his improvements are coming at faster pace from that side.

  94. Comment posted by Danny on April 2, 2008 at 12:21 am (#642253)

I mean, hasn;t he failed enough, Chris? What has to happen?

I mean, it is so obvious to everyone that has seen Delgado the past season that he is still a good hitter when he consentrates on the opposite field.

  97. Comment posted by Danny on April 2, 2008 at 12:23 am (#642255)

I think the notes my hurt him, Jessica, in a weird way. He looks at the sequence but still applies his approach to his “old skills”. It would almost be better if he didn’t have data and just adjusted his approach based solely on his current skills.

I took Glavine awhile to finally admit that he was sucking. When he finally bought into that, he was able to buy himself a few more season of goodness *I refuse to use greatness*.

  100. Comment posted by HAH! on April 2, 2008 at 12:24 am (#642257)

Some people are just too proud to change, especially when everyone tells them they must. I wonder if all of the NYC media hype on the issue hasn’t made Carlos a bit more defensive and stubborn about the issue of his approach and dimishing skills than he’d have been in a smaller market environment.

For all we know too is that Hojo and Delgado may be working on stuff. I mean, it takes weeks to start seeing changes if they make adjustments to his swing. I think he needs a lighter bat too

  109. Comment posted by HAH! on April 2, 2008 at 12:29 am (#642263)

I just keep remembering articles on how Delgado would contentiously dismiss any suggestion by NY reporters that his skills are diminishing and that as a result he’d have to adapt a new approach to this newfound reality. I hope he changes his mind on the matter.

  110. Comment posted by Danny on April 2, 2008 at 12:29 am (#642264)

I think Schneider has looked really good at the plate so far. He takes pitches, takes walks, takes good swings against lefties and generally is a tough out. And Schneider plays HARD. I like him a lot.

I always wanted to claim that Schneider was a better hitter than his stats indicated, but I knew no one would buy it.

Even the day of the Milledge trade, I said that in a vacuum I really liked both Schneider and Church. I don’t understand the trade, but I always liked those guys, Church was criminally mishandled by the Nationals.

What was the deal with Church in Washington. I know he and Windmill butted heads a bit last year. Was it just a case of the new braintrust not liking a guy they inherited.

I’m not really sure. Windmill actually gave him more of a chance than anybody else ever did. I think Church and Frank Robinson were oil and vinegar for some reason. It’s hard to say, Doc.

These things aren’t broken down and over-saturated with coverage like the NY teams (fortunately).
