you know who can bat righty? Scott Edward Spiezio…….Plus he can get H.

absolutely. Marlon is our best clutch hitter off the bench fo’ sure.

he’s got sneaky pop too which i love.

I’m not saying jettison marlon cuz he can only hit. we need his bat.

i’m just commenting how his 1-dimension’ness (ha!) helps lead to the possible bench issues we have.

  3. Comment posted by argonbunnies on February 29, 2008 at 4:44 pm (#619654)

The thing that scared me about Dirty wasn’t his missing some spots, it was the fact that his motion looked truncated. Less stride, opened up way early, threw across his body. Not at all the motion I remember.

  4. Comment posted by Danny on February 29, 2008 at 4:44 pm (#619655)

I should restate that. Easley is tremendously valuable, but he’s the guy on the bench I would want to replace first.

    Speez is such a douche.

a picture of him should be in the dictionary under douche n stuff

  6. Comment posted by Joe A. on February 29, 2008 at 4:45 pm (#619657)

I think there is a very good chance that Willie is looking at Easley as the back up IF, not Gotay. That leaves a spot open for a RH pinch hitter like Clark or Saenz or Johnson.

I’m not saying I agree with this strategy, but if Willie is going to start Reyes and Wright 160 times each, I don’t think he is too worried about who their back up is. And while we can obviouly question Easley’s ability to play SS, he was our only back-up IF to start last season, so obviously the Mets thought he could handle it a year ago. He certainly has a lot more experience there than GOtay and he played there a lot up until he came to the Mets.

Dirty’s stride was definitely WAY short. Heath Bell type of short. It was definitely a departure. I think he has time to fix mechanics. I just want him to not feel pain.

I also think there’s a good chance of this. And what a stupid mistake that would be.

Question Depski, if you needed a hit from a guy on the bench, we’re down by 1 with 2 outs and there is a guy on second and third and you need someone to slide tackle the 2nd baseman, who on the bench would you want up?

I’m picking Marlon Anderson every time.

    Fixed that for you.

  11. Comment posted by Willie Randolph on February 29, 2008 at 4:48 pm (#619662)

hey you guys are coming up with reasons for me to leave gotay off our team?

that’s the kinda thinking i like. my gut tells me we got something here.

I have some coach spots open next year.

    keep up the good work!

  12. Comment posted by argonbunnies on February 29, 2008 at 4:49 pm (#619663)

“The Heath Bell stride.” That was my thought exactly, Danny. Bell stayed back better and threw more over the top, though, so it didn’t look as werid to me as what I saw from Sanchez. I’m glad he’s not hurting now, but if he keeps throwing like that, I’d bet the hurtin’ will start soon enough.

  13. Comment posted by Lunkwill Fook on February 29, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#619664)

The problem with throwing straight over the top is that you lose some natural movement ala Heilman.

  14. Comment posted by Danny on February 29, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#619665)

There’s also a chance that the Mets wil keep Valentin over Gotay, too.

    That would be AWESOME!

  15. Comment posted by Joe A. on February 29, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#619666)

its very tough to carry just a bat in the NL when you want to carry 12 pitchers. it shortens your bench.

But that has not been the Mets approach the past 2 years. Franco, Newhan, Marlon, COnine all had spots on the bench with no positions. I think Willie prefers to have a righty PH specialist and a LH PH speialist on the bench. Those guys will almost never get a start. Then he has 1 back up each at OF, IF and C.

  16. Comment posted by ITAC on February 29, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#619667)

If easley is the backup IF, I well…I don’t know what I’d do. Gotay has to playon this team.

  17. Comment posted by Willie Randolph on February 29, 2008 at 4:50 pm (#619668)

    Jose Valentin is a gamer.

    he’s one of my guys.

you find me a reason to get him on the 25-man and I smell christmas bonus!!!

They pointed out on the broadcast today that Pedro had spoken to Duaner prior to his pitching and told him not to worry about his pitches at all today. Just get out there and start to feel comfortable. So I think we’re all reading too much into this. He hasn’t faced live batters in 1 1/2 years. Let’s not get nuts.
Danny is right…..as long as he’s pain free tomorrow, we should be happy.

  19. Comment posted by Danny on February 29, 2008 at 4:52 pm (#619670)

I’m glad he’s not hurting now, but if he keeps throwing like that, I’d bet the hurtin’ will start soon enough.

Yeah, throwing across your body is not a “stay healthy” type of motion. It adds a ton of stress. He didn’t look very good at all. I could care less about the velocity right now, but yeah, the mechanics and therefore his location didn’t look so hot.

I’m hopeful it’s just a knocking the cobwebs off type of thing.

Totally agree Shea. Its early. Just going out there and not reinjuring anything is key. Half way into spring he can work on mechanics. I dont really expect him to bounce right into that 8th inning role right away anyway.

If easley is the backup IF, I well…I don’t know what I’d do. Gotay has to playon this team.

If Easley is healthy, I don’t have a problem with it. Based on Gotay’s limited range at 2B I have no reason to believe he will be any better than Easley at SS. And it allows you to add a RH bat which is going to be important.

  24. Comment posted by Danny on February 29, 2008 at 4:57 pm (#619675)

With Easley’s bad wheel, I don’t know if I want him anywhere close to SS. But we might leave ourselves with him as the only option. It’s a definite possibility.

THe only reason I’m not convinced that this if what the Mets have in mind is that Omar probably would have more aggressive in bringing in potential RH pinch hitters. There were certainly better options out there than Saenz.

No, but given the tiny amount of playing time he will likely get at SS, I would be willing to make the trade off to make room for Clark on the roster.

I think Jocelyn is rather tasty. Her biggest problem is that she is tainted by publicly being with Antonio Pierce. You always like to think that your token hot female Mets Weekly host is single and therefore potentially obtainable. Sure, it makes no logical sense, but it helps dodes.

Yeah, but he’s primarily a LH hitter - that’s the real problem with our bench.

Ben Johnson doesn’t suck, even if he was kinda sorta awful in his brief appearance in ‘07. He put up decent numbers in San Diego the 2 years before that (low OBP, but decent pop).

That’s the basic problem. We give these guys a glove and call them whatever their glove says they are. That’s how we got here….lol!

  43. Comment posted by Danny on February 29, 2008 at 5:07 pm (#619694)

Yeah, I was being intentionally overly dramatic with the BJ stinks line. But he’s not a viable option to start the season as your righthanded lefty masher guy. He has to work himself into that role.

I still have hopes for BJ as a valuable 4th or 5th OF.

The answer for this team continues to be Jonny Gomes. RH who plays OF and 1B and murders LH. His stock was at an all-time low mid-2007, but he’s picked it up since he got healthy again. I still don’t think TB values him that highly, but we probably don’t have anything to trade for him now.

I see no reason why platooning Church is more important than platooning any other LH; his splits are pretty average.

sup geeks… So I hear all this talk about dirty. First he’s throwing wonderful. Great motion, good location and movement topping out at around 90 during the intrasquad game.

Then I hear he is “sore” and skips a start. Now when he finally does pitch his motion is all funky and hes hardly hitting 85 and the movement isn’t there.

Do you guys think he hurt himself and his compensating for it by changing his motion? Has that been mentioned?

  58. Comment posted by argonbunnies on February 29, 2008 at 5:41 pm (#619709)

According to whom? Peterson? Anyone else and I’d take it with a grain of salt.

I’d assume he looked the same as he looked today — he could throw it near the plate and his breaking stuff was breaking, which is kind of a triumph for someone who’s been out so long.

Hey, here’s a fun opinion poll!

From what I saw of Johan today, it might be him, but there’s another guy who’s close: Mike Pelfrey. I LOVE his delivery.

A federal judge ordered Barry Bonds’ grand jury testimony unsealed on Friday.

The documents will show the indicted slugger had additonal positive steroids tests beyond the previously reported one in November 2000, according to a source familiar with the government’s evidence, ESPN’s T.J. Quinn reported. The U.S. Attorney’s office had previously disclosed that Bonds tested positive for testosterone, but information about other failed tests has not been previously disclosed.

jets got a 2008 pick along with the 2009 conditional.

    http://blogs.trb.com/sports/football/jets/blog/2008/02/vilma_comp_update.html

    Vilma comp update

Just got off the phone with Mike Tannenbaum on a conference call. He said that the Jets aren’t getting a conditional pick in 2009 from the Saints for Vilma. He said the deal is for a solid pick THIS YEAR in 2008 and, based on Vilma’s production, possibly another pick in 2009. And it sounds like that second one could be a third-rounder.

Well, that changes things a bit.

the redHawks defeated the farteyes, which i was glad to see.

    real hockey starts in just a few days (conference p’offs). the wheat will be separated from the chaff very quickly. at this moment i do not like irish chances whatsoever. they simply cannot score goals;

i like the sioux or the redHawks to win it all…
