A Remembrance for Patrick

We are all saddened and heartbroken over the passing of our friend and fellow geek, Patrick O’Keefe, or as we knew him…..Woody.

For those who haven’t seen it, here is Patrick’s obituary.

It is fitting that they mention that Patrick was an avid Mets fan. And it’s also a nice tribute that his best friend, Bryan (also known as MetsWin2008) and his mom Frances are also mentioned.

To honor Patrick’s memory, we will be purchasing an 8”x8” brick with a Mets logo to be placed on the Mets Fan Walk…which will become a permanent part of Citi Field on the plaza outside of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. It will make Patrick proud as he watches all the games from his very own skybox!

The brick will read:

IN MEMORY OF
PATRICK O’ KEEFE
“WOODY”
METSGEEKFOREVER

A replica brick will be sent to Bryan.

I am posting in hopes that you will contribute $16 toward the gift… ($15 is for the gift…..$1 goes to PayPal to collect your money). You are free to give more or less. This is just a suggestion. And please do not feel any pressure or obligation at all to donate.

Danny, our honorary MetsGeek treasurer will be collecting the funds. Please email him at dannymetsgeek@yahoo.com for your instructions.

Those of you who have already contributed, your money will go to buy the brick.

Please know that any additional funds collected above the price of the brick will be donated to the American Cancer Society in Patrick’s name as per his family’s wishes.

Thank you all for your kindness, generosity and support. MetsGeek is so much more than just a sports blog. It is truly a community of friends.

If you have any questions or need further info, please feel free to contact me at

    Shea,

with the restrictions that the mets have on what can be on the bricks, will they have an issue with “IN MEMORY OF”?

    just wondering.

I don’t believe so Confused, but obviously I will check. I just emailed them.

    Engraving
Your brick can be engraved with up to 15 characters per line (punctuation and spaces count as characters). Your information must fit within the spaces provided. Special letters, fonts and symbols not found on a standard keyboard may not be used. Your text will be centered and engraved with all uppercase letters. Please do not include e-mail addresses, phone numbers, web addresses, company names, advertising or inappropriate language. The New York Mets reserve the absolute right to approve all text prior to production. Exceptions will not be permitted.

Confused, these are the restrictions the Mets list on the website for what can be engraved on the brick. I think we’re okay, though obviously they leave it open to their case-by-case discretion.

Thanks for posting the obituary. The Brick is just an awesome idea and something that would of been right up Wood’s alley. I think its the best gift we could give him to thank him for being our friend.

Shea and Danny, outstanding work. We all appreciate your taking the reins on this. Wood is undoubtedly tipping his royal blue cap to you and sheepishly whispering “Thanks, you two.”

Well they built the Titanic to be one of a kind, but many ships have ruled the seas
They built the Eiffel Tower to stand alone, but they could build another if they please
The Taj Mahal, the pyramids of Egypt, are unique I suppose
But when they built you, brother, they broke the mold

Now the world is filled with many wonders under the passing sun
And sometimes something comes along and you know it’s for sure the only one
The Mona Lisa, the David, the Sistine Chapel, Jesus, Mary, and Joe
And when they built you, brother, they broke the mold

They say you can’t take it with you, but I think that they’re wrong
‘Cause all I know is I woke up this morning, and something big was gone
Gone into that dark ether where you’re still young and hard and cold
And when they built you, brother, they broke the mold

Now your death is upon us and we’ll return your ashes to the earth
And I know you’ll take comfort in knowing you’ve been roundly blessed and cursed
But love is a power greater than death, just like the songs and stories told
And when she built you, brother, she broke the mold

That attitude’s a power stronger than death, alive and burning her stone cold
When they built you, brother …

Don’t have a PayPal account. Can I drop my money off to someone who is going on opening day?

Very nice tribute. Thanks to everyone. You guys have really helped me through this tough time. Patrick would be touched to know so many people cared and felt for him. He really was a special guy and I will miss him dearly. 86, that poem blew me away. That was amazing and sweet. Thanks buddy.

We should definitely have an official “Commemorate Woody’s Block” MetsGeek day at CitiField (if we can get the tickets, obviously). Mind you, that’s well in the future but it never hurts to plan ahead.
