Go OBAMA.
Go McCain
Move this country forward
from Baseball Musings:
Huh? “Highest level” for Beltran? Did I merely dream that he posted 33hrs and 112rbis in 2007?
Jeez, we are just hated and misunderstood out there!
A healthy Moises Alou is an offensive superstar. He is performing at a high level, but can’t stay on the field.
Jose Reyes is an offensive superstar. He just needs to be consistent for the entire year. The same can be said for DW b/c he was ice cold last April.
Ryan Church….
congrats on the redhawks sweep, pj. i agreee, they will prob be the new #1. sorry about the bad info i gave on the michigan - msu game. 93x, no less) the notre dame hockey announcer said msu swept. i should have checked it out before i posted..
no worries custer. i got my score from espn, but i still wasn’t 100% sure it was correct. now the redhawks will have the burden of being #1 and every team will be gunning for them. IIRC we still have a series with Michigan before the season ends.
Bobby V bleeds Giant Blue!
Bobby V part II

Obama? mmmm. Very intriguing. Havent heard this name yet.
What does he throw? Is he a Starter? Reliever? If he can throw im all for it.
Now this McCain guy would be great too. We havent had a great hitting catcher since the likes of Mike Piazza. I’m all for this trade.
Wow Pj thanks for posting that. That was some article. Its great to hear from Bobby V. I was a huge fan of his and its pretty awesome that he follows the Giants so closely. He’s definately a true New Yorker. Now if he could just hook us up with the next Ichiro Suzuki we’s be straight ;-)
From our favorite info site thats owned by that really famous Mathew Cerrone guy:
Wow, I don’t know how long the Mets are going allow themselves to be used as pawns in this whole affair. It seems obvious to me that Minnesota doesn’t want our guys and is holding out for better deals from the BoSox and Yanks. I am glad that those two teams are backing off, as it makes the Twins strategy backfire in their faces.
The funny thing that I take from this whole process Ramon, is that neither the Sox or Yanks are really even interested in obtaining him. There more interested in keeping him away from the other. Both teams could probably care less if he winds up a Met. This is basically one of those rare times that using the Yanks, Sox and Mets in a trade senerio actually could backfire and it really seems like it is.
True dat. I wonder how Omar could use this to his advantage….
I think by doing what hes been doing, he has been. Its definately one of his best moves as a GM so far if he were to land him. Sure, people will analyze it up and down but you have to give him props that he didnt jump or panic at any time during this whole process. He couldve given up a ton early on. Believe me, you and I both know we have had GM’s in the past that wouldve blinked around mid november, given up the farm and a few major league ready guys as well and landed him by now. By standing pat he’s basically made the Twins come to him. Its a very nice move and definately great to know that we dont have a GM that can be pushed around.
Yes, I believe Omar has cooly played the market for Santana as he has done in the past with other potential GMs and free agents who wanted to fleece the team for talent or money. I am still in favor of keeping our system intact, but if the asking price for Santana goes down due to a lack of interest then Omar is a very enviable position. I just can’t believe that Boston or the Yankees would pull out at this juncture and must be playing their games as well. But we’ll see…
Thats very true as well. We’ll it will definately be an interesting month. We have the Super Bowl, Super Tuesday and Johan finding a new home.
Another bum arm off the market
Boston can pull out for sure they have the best staff in the majors, thats why they won the WS
Hilarious, nothing like making your peer look stupid.
“Okay, Minny, here’s the deal… Mulvey, Church and a one way ticket to Budapest for when you realize Church’s ceiling is in a platoon. Not enough? Here are two players for Brooklyn whose names we do not remember.”
My dream would involve dumping Church and Schneider both in the deal and then pick Estrada back up for cheaper. This is just me. Then at least I could partially justify losing Milledge.
Giving up what Milledge was thrown away for and some good minor league pitchers for Santana and I could deal a lot better with this season.
I still say that Minnesota is mostly dealing with the Mets to try to get the Yankees to bite so as to get the Red Sox to bite.
If it backfires? Oh God, let it backfire.
Wagner in his last year?
no Wags has a club option for 2010
I know it is all “hot stove talk” as i’ve seen plenty of hot stove seasons before, but one of the things that has been bugging me the most about this whole Santana ordeal, is how the press continually talks about the Yankee and Red Sox young players/prospects as they’re all dipped in gold and talks about the Met prospects as they’re less than that.
How many stories do we have to read…”The Mets are struggling to put together an adequate package for Santana, while the Red Sox/Yanks refuse to offer their superior prospects”….How many prospects do the Red Sox and Yanks have that are better than F-Mart?
Wood, Nathan is a local too. That would be pretty awesome. Its far fetched b/c Wags is here for awhile, I know, but he’s definately one of the top 5 closers in all of baseball. Plus, he’s like clock work against the Yanks. Every game Ive seen him in, he shuts them down 1,2,3.
mets wont get nathan, they wont paya RP 15 mil a year that isnt the closer.
Billy Wagner lhp
4 years/$43M (2006-09), plus $8M 2010 club option
Wagners contract is looking mighty cheap now, such a deal.
Yea, no doubt Super T. It definatlety gets old thats for sure. There all prospects, whats to say Pelfrey doesnt have a better career than Hughes? Because he had a mediocre 1st season in the majors? Hughes could get figured out and suck for the rest of his tenure there. Pelfrey could get tons better. Who knows what will happen.
For every highly touted prospect that makes it big, there will always be the Brien Taylor’s, Alex Escobar’s, Shawn Abner’s of the world.
Its nice that we had all our best pieces signed to long term deal before the market got rediculous. Wagner, Reyes, Wright, Beltran, would cost us a bundle if they had a contract up now. Ollie is the only one coming into FA that will cost us a lot to keep. The rest are periferal players. If they dont accept Delgados option, which is 16 million after this year, and go after Texeria then hes another high dollar guy who will want a 5 year deal.
Im not sure what kind of price Pedro will get it really depends on how he pitches this year. Another injury and he might retire. A clean year where he pitches 150ip he would probably be up for 15 mil per in a new contract which is kind of modest in this FA atmosphere. I think Pedro likes it in NY and would give us the first shopt at signing him for sure unlike Ollie with boras as his agent.
Yea, i dont ever see him coming here, even if all the planets aligned and all that, lol. He is pretty darn good though, I have to give him props. That Wagner deal looks awesome right now. Plus how great do the deals of Reyes and Wright look? It was pretty smart to lock them up young.
I dont think Pedro is one of those guys that wants to pitch until hes past his prime, so the great thing is, we could probably get away with a 2 year 15 mil per deal. Ollie OTOH is gonna be some bucks. Hes got the bad @ss agent, he’s young, and hes a hard throwing lefty. He will probably want 4-5 years easy.
I figure Ollie would want: 5/75 mil or 6/90
Pedro 2/30 mil
When I think about our staff I tend to completely forget about Pedro. I almost forget that he actually did pitch for us last year, since his starts came mostly during a month of baseball we’d all like to forget.
If he’s really healthy, I have to imagine that he can be pretty valuable for us. If not…
Top FA 2009
C.C. Sabathia CLE
Johan Santana MIN
Ben Sheets MIL
Oliver Perez NYM
Pedro Martinez NYM
Jon Garland LAA
Derek Lowe LAD
There are other guys with options
yeah this year will be big for the Mets. The rookies, Pelfrey, Humber, Mulvey, development if they are not traded and Pedros comeback will decide what direction we go in 2009. 2009 to 2013 will be our last window with beltran, Wright and reyes as our core. Unless of course Wilpon is ready to drop a bundle by then to resing them. I expect Wright and Reyes to get resigned as they are still young enough to be worth it.
Wright is up in 2014 option added in
Delgado is up in 2010 option added in
Reyes and Beltran contracts are up in 2012
Wagner is up in 2011 option added in
Castillo is up in 2012
Church FA in 2011
Heilman is a FA in 2011
Maine is a FA in 2011
So 2011 is the year this team breaks up some, thats a 3 year window from now, unless some are resigned early.
Delgado, Wagner and Castillo will be gone because of old age. That leaves beltran at 34, Wright at 29, reyes at 28, church at 34, Maine at 31,and heilman 34 in 2011.
I wish Cots would add players ages to their contracts. I did a quick calc on the ages so dont abuse me if im a year off on a few.
Im real bored folks and nothing is going on lol
One would hope :)
A little age hasn’t really stopped the Mets in the past though…
It is kind of a boring day - next Sunday should be great though!
The smarter team are know understandign with the big money FA ask for that you have to develop from within to keep your payroll down. This is why I think the yankees are even full of chit saying they are in the santana trade. They had a 218 million payroll last year plus luxury tax penalties on 400 million is revenue. Im sure they only made 10-120 million last year for that top earning franchise. Its a business the tightwads that own the teams have profits as first priority.
* 100-120 million
Is Carlos Pena the best player noone has ever heard of?
i am a little surprised at the news that heilman will not be a f/a until 2011. but i trust wood’s info. how about kazmir? whem will he be a f/a?
p.s. east coast big east fans pretty much rocked hoosierland yesterday. a depleted uconn squad beat the hoosiers at home. first home loss in 2 yrs +.. bloomington is still reeling..
Some interesting stuff from John Perrotto’s column on BP (keep in mind that he’s a beat writer for a paper in the Pittsburgh area):
If the Twins really are looking to sign Lofton, that means they’re probably more interested in Heilman than Church. I’d see what the Twins think of a Heilman/Mulvey/Gomez/Pelfrey or Humber package.
i had a feeling that somehow heilman was going to be eventually involved in a santana deal.. of all the teams heilman could wind up on, i think the hefty-bag bowl would have the worst effect on his career,,
Of all the names i’ve seen mentioned in a possible Santana deal Aaron Heilman is the one name I don’t want to see dealt. A lot of good it would do to get Santana when the Mets won’t have anybody who can hold down a lead in the 6-8 innings.
i should just go on the record and say for what the twinkies are demanding, they can keep santana; next year just throw money at the guy and he is ours. and the next year kazmir, no way do (i) trade f-mart or gomez or reyes no f’n way..
TB just gave Sheilds a 7 year 44 million contract so they will have to pay up big to lock up kazmir.
I agree Super T heilman would be stupid. Omar had said you dont make holes to fill holes so I think that report is bogus. let them have Church.
For me, F-Mart and Guerra would be the 2 untouchables in the farm system, and I’d want to keep at least one of Pelfrey/Humber. If the Twins can’t find a deal they’d like under those parameters, they can go have fun watching the YankSox play chicken.
Joe Sheehan brings up an interesting point: most of the proposed Santana deals from all 3 interested teams have revolved around pitching prospects - the one thing the Twins have a ton of in their farm system. What the Twins really need are infielders. IMO, if the Red Sox really wanted Santana, they’d have put together a package centered around Jed Lowrie.
Hey I say throw in AH, he hit .300 last year you know ;-)
Mulvey, Humber Gomez, Church, Anderson Hernandez, would be the package I sent.
I still dont think Boston is really interested in Santana, they are bluffing to keep the yankees from getting him.
I totally agree the way all these writers talk if the Yankees or BoSox really wanted Santana, they would already have him. I’m just hoping that both teams hold firm in not wanting him.
One thing I have always admired about OM in his tenure as GM of the Mets is his patience with dealing with free agents. But with that being said, and having just read a blurb that said the Mets are holding off on Santana from making any other possible SP deals…if Santana isn’t dealt in the next ten days, it might be time to move on in preparation for the 2008 season.
I dont know about anyone else but if the Mets sign Santana I would be much more ok with signing Livan then. This would give whoever is left of the rookie pitchers time to develop in AAA.
Think we already discussed this the other day, but I actually go the other way with it Wood. If the Mets get Santana ie a 200IP a season pitcher it slots down Pedro, Maine, and Perez in the SP order, and I see no need to sign a Livan Herandez for 2-4 years and millions of dollars to be the teams 5th SP, when El Duque, Pelfrey, and Humber are all more than capable of competing for the 5th SP spot. We really won’t need a Livan Hernandez if we do in fact get Santana.
No way I sign Livan for more then 1 year. Its not like his options abound.
Livan will probably get a year and an option from some team. Consider the market.
Pause.

Hines is too sensitive…
Heh heh heh. That’s almost as unintentionally hilarious as the Carson Palmer hotdog commercial.
sorry about the room mate fiasco jess….this semester you should not be as lenient.. don’t take her disrespect. You should fight fire with fire and have strange bots over at all hours and sleep in and use all the hot water….eat all her Raman noodles too..
don’t have bots over…thats still in the future, have boys over instead.
we cannot empty the farm for dead-arm yesterday’s news sanatana.. please we must build from within or not bother to play this dumb kids’ game.
you want to throw the bank acct @ sanatana in 2009 no problem..
have we learned no-thing from the kazmir watetloo?
Victor Zambrano……..Johan Santana………hmmmmm…not following this comparision?
please i want nothing to do w/sanatana at his alleged market price, the ship will be righted and the karma will be in line when we throw the bank acct at kazmir
Nor do I. I just hope we don’t give away too much.
bcuster…Kazmir will back on the Mets the same year that the Fighting Irish win a national title in football ;-)
I’ve hardly been the one beating the “gotta trade the prospects drum” this offseason, but for Johan Santana, namely the best pitcher in MLB who is still under 30 years of age, you definitely have to do it if possible.
Who says Kazmir even makes it too free agency, and if he does, who says the Yankees in particular don’t come hard after him?
Here is the latest installment of As The LoDuca Turns.
WASHINGTON — Nationals catcher Paul Lo Duca was scheduled to have surgery on his left knee Monday to repair what his agent called a minor meniscus tear.
Lo Duca will see a team doctor on Monday “for further testing,” general manager Jim Bowden wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Sunday.
“If an operation is indicated,” Bowden continued, “it will be arthroscopic and the estimated recovery time would be 4-6 weeks, with the expectation he could be ready for Opening Day.”
Washington’s pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training in Viera, Fla., on Feb. 15, which is about 2½ weeks away.
Earlier Sunday, Lo Duca’s agent, Andrew Mongelluzzi, wrote to AP: “Paul will have surgery in the morning. I am told that it is a minor meniscus tear.”
Mongelluzzi also said Lo Duca could need as many as six weeks for a full recovery.
Bowden said an MRI showed a “possible tear.”
Lo Duca, who signed a $5 million, one-year deal as a free agent this offseason, hurt himself during a workout last week and then had an MRI, the Nationals had announced on Friday.
Lo Duca hit .272 with nine homers and 54 RBIs for the Mets last season, his second in New York. Washington signed him in December, less than two weeks after trading veteran catcher Brian Schneider to the Mets.
Lo Duca, who will turn 36 in April, and Nationals manager Manny Acta were in New York together in 2006, when Acta was the Mets third-base coach.
In 10 major league seasons with the Dodgers, Marlins and Mets, Lo Duca has batted .288 with 80 homers and 466 RBIs. He was a four-time All-Star from 2003-06.
It’s looking better and better by the day that the Mets cut ties with Paulie.
Yup. The guy was a major drag in more ways than one it seems. Maybe he wasn’t as good as I thought he was for us….
Wow, looks like the Erik Bedard to the M’s trade is about to go through…Adam Jones is flying to Baltimore to take a physical according to Metsblog.
Who says Kazmir even stays healthy?
It’s a crapshoot.
Get Santana.
I have no idea where a scenario involving picking up Delgado’s option would not be immediate grounds for committal to an insane asylum. One of the inexpensive awful ones… with rats and stuff.
who says sanatana’s arm is healthy? i think his gun is dead….
i wasn’t aware kazmir was a free agent next year…
wilpon cash or old farts only for santanana; no prospects…
sorry: skunkboys ain’t givin’ up hughes; we ain’t giving up f-mart…
