WASHINGTON - The White House has acknowledged recycling its backup computer tapes of e-mail before October 2003, raising the possibility that many electronic messages - including those pertaining to the CIA leak case - have been taped over and are gone forever.

The disclosure came minutes before midnight Tuesday under a court-ordered deadline that forced the White House to reveal information it has previously refused to provide.

Among the e-mails that could be lost are messages swapped by any White House officials involved in discussions about leaking the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame.

    hahahaaahahah Convenient.

    via metsblog, NYFS says:

5 Under-the-Radar Prospects To Watch For

    By TJD
    January 16, 2008 -

The NYFS community is well aware of the big names within our system, but just how deep does the rabbit hole go? Are there any guys, besides the usual suspects, who are worth keeping an eye on? The answer is yes, there are several players who’ve flown under the radar but who have legitimate chances to make contributions at the big league level.

What are the criteria to be so honored? First, the prospect can’t be a high-profile one; this is incredibly subjective on my part, but it seems as though there’s a clear line between the most talked-about players and the ones who are less known. Second, the prospect must have at least a puncher’s chance to stick at the big league level. If the prospect is a pitcher, he must project to be a middle-order guy or solid setup man at worst, and if the prospect is a position player, he must be capable of starting and contributing over replacement level.

At the outset, I will say that Fernando Martinez, Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey, Deolis Guerra, Mike Pelfrey, Phillip Humber, Eddie Kunz, and Mike Carp did not make the cut because of criteria #1. I also considered and eliminated Evans, Niese, Freakin’ Parnell, Vineyard, Pena, Tejada and several others for the same reason. I am not a scout, nor have I been fortunate enough to see these players with my own eyes. I base my judgments on information taken from www.mets.scout.com and www.baseballamerica.com, as well as various chats with reporters and other professionals. With these notes in mind, here are the prospects worth noting:

#1) Brant Rustich: Rated as the #4 Mets prospect (beind Gomez/Martinez/Humber, and ahead of Guerra) by scout.com, and the #6 Mets prospect by Baseball America, Rustich was a setup man/closer at UCLA who boasts a killer mid-to-high 90s fastball and a mid-to-high 80’s slider. He was drafted this past June with little fanfare, but made himself known by blowing away the Rookie League and Low-A late this year to the tune of 10 hits, 2 walks, and 21 K’s in 23 innings. A small sample to be sure, but Rustich’s stuff is legit. He has the body and stamina to be a starter, but would need to work on a third pitch to be truly effective in that role. On the flip side, he will make the majors faster as a setup man, and could eventually become a closer, so the Mets’ options with him are wide open. The biggest red flag with Rustich - and it’s a big red flag - is that he needed surgery on his throwing hand after rupturing a ligament in college. If Rustich can avoid the injury bug, the Mets may have landed an absolute steal with the 97th pick.

#2) Dylan Owen: Another selection from this past year’s draft, Dylan Owen was the Division II pitcher of the year, as well as the Ace of the Brooklyn Cyclones’ staff this year. His numbers at Low-A were excellent: 9-1, 1.49; 51 hits, 12 walks, and 69 K’s in 72.1 IP [this after pitching 102 IP prior to the draft]. Of course, pitcher-friendly Brooklyn is a long ways away from Shea, but Owen has a deep repertoire of pitches which figure to improve as he contines his ascension in the system. His fastball is generally low 90’s [although one chatter at BA said it was high-80s], and his slider is his most advanced pitch with good break and control. Additionally, Baseball America lists Owen as having the best control of any pitcher on the farm. He needs several years in the minors according to Scout.com, to gain better command of his fastball, and to dial his changeup back as he throws it too fast to successfully disrupt timing. But, Owen’s promising debut and arsenal puts his ceiling as a better-than-average major leaguer starter, in the low 2/high 3 spectrum of a rotation.

#3) Hector Pellot: In 2005, Pellot was listed as the second-best prospect to come out of Puerto Rico. He struggled (.189/.292/.259) in his debut season, but rebounded nicely in Class A Savannah (.274/.344/.381) before earning a late promotion to St. Lucie. As a second baseman, Pellot made significant strides as well, according to Scout.com. His speed (33 of 50 SB last year, 3 triples) and power (7 HR, 19 Doubles) combination make him an attractive top-of-the-order option, but the soon-to-be 21 year old must still make progress with his defense and must drastically cut down on his K rate (200 Ks vs. 82 BBs in 813 ABs) if he wishes to continue to climb the ladder. Like Owen, Pellot needs several years on the farm, but he figures to start the season in High-A and a late 2010 debut wouldn’t be out of the question, depending on his growth and Castillo’s regression.

#4) Raul Reyes: The just-turned-21-years-old Reyes may be on the old side for Low-A, but he figures to spend next season at Savanna, where questions will be answered as to the limits of his ability. According to Scout.com, he is an excellent Centerfielder, with great range, a strong arm, and good instincts. He made only 1 error in 71 games. The questions with Reyes lie on the offensive side of the plate - as noted, he’s bordering on old for Low-A and his .233/.321/.423, coupled with a 94/27 K/BB in 253 ABs would hardly scream potential impact player. But look deeper: his OBP is nearly 90 points higher than his average, and his SLG is nearly 200 points higher. The great speed which makes him an excellent CF has not translated yet on offense (career 12-for-20 SB; 4 triples in 2007), but the tool is definitely there. Additionally, Reyes flashes good power (9 HR, 13 Doubles). Scout.com projects him as a 4th OF currently, but if he can lower the K rate and build upon his natural speed and power, there’s a chance he could grow into much more.

#5) Phillips Orta: Orta is my deep sleeper pick. Ranked at #150 going into the draft by Baseball America in 2006, the Mets got Orta in the 10th round as a draft-and-follow, and he made his debut this year, pitching in the Rookie League at age 21. The results are uninspiring, especially considering his age: 2-2, 4.58; 62 Hits, 21 BB, 45 Ks in 53 IP. But, Orta has a mid-90s fastball and a low-80s curveball, both of which are plus pitches. His changeup must be improved, as must his command. The good news is that both these things - command and the changeup - tend to develop late for a pitcher, and if they do, Orta already has the other offerings needed to succeed. He is my sleeper because the fastball is live enough and the curve is sharp enough that if the changeup and command improve, he will have all the tools he needs to succed.

A lady walks into Tiffany’s. She browses around, spots a beautiful diamond bracelet and walks over to inspect it. As she bends over to look more closely she inadvertently breaks wind. Very embarrassed, she looks around nervously to see if anyone has noticed her little accident and prays that a sales person doesn’t pop up right now. As she turns around, her worst nightmare materializes in the form of a salesman standing right behind her.

Cool as a cucumber and displaying complete professionalism, the salesman greets the lady with, ‘Good day, Madam. How may we help you today?’ Very uncomfortably, but hoping that the salesman may just not have been there at the time of her little ‘accident’, she asks, ‘Sir, what is the price of this lovely bracelet?’

He answers, ‘Madam, if you farted just looking at it, you’re going to sh!t when I tell you the price.’

I think one of the biggest problems will be the Giants corners. Can they cover the receivers? Green Bays recievers are very fast and I think they lead the leaague in yards after catches. That could be a real problem for the GMen.

Did anyone hear that one of the Cowboy coaches said that Romo reinjured his thumb during the game and that’s why he couldn’t pass the ball. It’s sure a good thing that the Giants defense had nothing to do with his being so lousy. Thank goodness they had a legitimate excuse for the loss ;-)

I must be getting old because….

I just do NOT see the big deal about Facebook!

I’ll try to explain it for you, 71 (and for anyone else who feels the same way)

The great thing about Facebook is that it’s a quick way of sharing big info with everyone you know. Pictures from that big party last night? Just upload them to an album, and all your friends can see them and “tag” the ones they’re in. Want to send a quick note to someone you know? You don’t even have to remember their e-mail address anymore, just their name. Plus there are all sorts of really fun ways to waste time.

And if you’re a girl who goes to a school where most of the cute guys are gay, being able to type in someone’s name and see the “Interested In” section on his profile can save you a lot of embarrassment and heartache. Um, not that that’s anything more than a hypothetical situation or anything.

pj, if you’re worried about snooping, you can set it so that only your friends can view your profile. A lot of people I know do that so that potential employers can’t see the hundreds of s**tfaced pics they’ve taken.

Well hopefully when it melts it helps with the local water supply. Im tired of hearing that atlanta has no water.

Rangers better win the next 2 also.

LOL Chris. Enjoy. Thats pretty cool. When was the last time you guys had snow there?

As for the Giants, I agree with Shea. There playing with house money. If they pull it off, awesome, if not it was fun and exciting. The best thing is Eli grew up before our eyes and will no longer here all the bullcrap. Hes a good QB, not great, but he’s still young enough to were he could be great. The NY media needs to cut the kid a break and hopefully this does it.

shea, nothing incriminating on my page, my friends are sketchy though.

jess, thanks! it was the byproduct of working closely with 16 college interns. i don’t use it much, so not sure if i’ll keep it anyway.

The water situation is getting better where I am. My water does not come from where people in atlanta get their water. It is no longer an exceptional drought, just an extreme. exceptional is the worse kind of drought you can have. We should make some of it up this spring and summer

it snowed here last yr 07 but people had to stay up to see it. The blizzard of 93 or 94 was the last bad bad snow. many died

  95. Comment posted by Chris in GA on January 16, 2008 at 10:33 pm (#591261)

and people didnt die cause of being dumb. my town is very very hilly. I mean. I can coast to work pretty much and I live 5 miles away from work. people would have heart attacks and they couldnt get to them

No doubt Booey. Thats the #1 rule in my book, lol.
I still remember going to the beach and my ex telling me
“I saw you looking at that chick with the pink thong”
    My only reply was
“How did you know she had a pink thong? You mustve been looking too” lol
