The much-anticipated server move of MetsGeek has been completed. We have moved from shared hosting with BlueHost.com to dedicated virtual hosting with Media Temple. BlueHost.com was a great host which could no longer handle the demands of a site this size, and we thank them for putting up with us for so long.
The new host allows us to utilize far greater resources than we could have in a shared hosting environment, the upshot of which means more features for our community. We have restored a number of past features of the site, including polls (right sidebar), printing/e-mailing of posts, journal ratings, comment quick-keys (the formatting buttons above the comment window), and more.
We have also introduced a new feature called “Blog Feeds” (you’ll notice a link to this effect in the snazzy new navigation bar at the top of the page). In short, Blog Feeds are a hierarchy of RSS feeds integrated into the site. We have gotten the ball rolling with some of our favorite Mets blogs and non-Mets baseball sites. At the lowest level of the hierarchy is a single RSS feed (e.g. Amazin’ Avenue), which displays the latest syndicated feed list from that site and allows ongoing discussion about the linked posts. Each post has a clickable “Discuss This Link” link that copies the post’s title and URL to the comment box so that you can discuss that particular post here at MetsGeek.
The blog feeds are definitely a work-in-progress, so if you have any comments, suggestions, or other feedback, please let us know.
Visually, the sidebars have been re-organized a bit and the right sidebar has been widened to accommodate a larger advertising box. Fancy new servers cost money, so the wider sidebar is an effort to offset some of those expenses with additional advertising revenue. We considered a top banner as well as in-post advertising, but we ultimately decided that those were too intrusive. Thanks in advance for you understanding.
Organizationally, the left sidebar contains primarily ads and the site login links. The right sidebar has some new (and restored) features like “Highest Rated Journals”, “Recently Commented Blog Feeds” and “Recent Articles” to help keep on top of the latest and greatest content being created and discussed here.
Best of all, we have almost certainly seen the last of the dreaded “CPU Quota Exceeded” messages that have been the banes of our existence for quite some time now.
You may notice a bit of sluggishness loading some of the pages. We are working on streamlining the load times by taking advantage of caching and other efficiencies. Please bear with us as we iron out some of these issues.
That’s all for now. Hope you enjoy the new digs and the new features. Thank you all for your patience with the move as well as your continued support.
UPDATE: The page looks funky in Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Explorer 6.0. We are working to correct that. If you don’t feel like waiting you can try using a better browser or upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.
Eric Simon has far too much time on his hands. He sleeps upside-down, keeps people as pets, and can be found on the internets at
Amazin' Avenue or bothered directly at
eric@metsgeek.com.
hey..blockquotes are back! It’s a day after thanksgiving miracle!
wow this will take some time to get used to. Larger sidebars means more scrolling I guess but if that means the CPU wont exceed bandwith anymore then im all for it :)
Yaaaa
I feel like I have a new toy all to myself…..
MU KU for #1 tomorrow….Very Exciting stuff for MO football. Uncharted territory….
I’ll root for big blue if you guy’s throw some love MU way….DEAL?
By the way…thank you and excellent work Mr. Simon, and all of the guys who run this site…
We changed the DNS entries for the site to point to the new server so chances are that a lot of people are still seeing the Maintenance Mode screen on the old site. Sometimes it takes time for their ISPs to update their DNS settings.
Looks great…thank you for your hard work.
I have just ONE complaint about the new server:
TIM THE CARDINAL FAN GOT THE 1ST POST!!
I tell ya, that just ain’t right!!
hahahahaha!
but seriously….
thanks for the ongoing hard work, Eric!
The Reds and Francisco Cordero have come to terms on a four-year, $46 million contract with an option for a fifth year, FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reports.
MFS….I was lurking, waiting patiently to screw you guys.
haha, timmy, I knew it, you snake!! lol
according to Roto, Johan Santana is now officially on the trade block
Hooray for the Geek improvements! Return of the blockquote buttons + no more CPU quota messages = a more useful holiday gift than most of the stuff people were trampling each other over at 4 AM :-)
Wow sexy new Metsgeek that doesn’t crash.
Well, let’s wait until the bullpen blows a late inning lead. That’s usually a sure fire Metsgeek crash special.
Attention Head Geeks! My page view is a bit messed up. The left sidebar and main thread box display OK, but the right sidebar is half-hidden behind the left sidebar. An ideas?
What browser and resolution are you using? E-mail me a screenshot if possible (eric at metsgeek dot com).
Looks great … but much slower overall … and no longer works on my Blackberry, for some reason. My contributions will be curtailed (Geeks rejoice everywhere.)
We are working on a mobile version of the site that should take care of the BB issue, and overall site efficiency improvements will be made in the coming days and weeks to improve load times.
Thanks, Eric. I truly appreciate all you guys do. And having blockquotes back as brought me a giddy, Oxy-like rush. Thank you.
i might cry.
i am gonna cry.
We are young!
Testing mobile comment posting.
ha, awesome.
it took me an hour to figure out how to dump my DNS settings on my Mac.
blockquote buttons!
nice work guys. thanks for all the hard work you put into this site.
Okay, mobile access should be working now. The mobile version of the site should come up automatically when you view metsgeek.com on your phone. Comment posting is enabled, though you will have to log in (there is a login link near the comment form on any post).
Heartache to heartache, we stand!
Posting from blackberry.
posting from iPod touch.
Site is not the mobile version, but the regular full site.
This will make the fan boys happy, but I’m not one so it doesn’t make me happy.
:-(
posting from my treo 650,
the mobile site looks a lot better on the 680 than on the blackberry.
it has color, and the comments alternat colors. better to idnetify post.
on the blackberry, its just black or blue text on white.
Wouldn’t you expect the iPhone/iTouch to display the full version of the site? Does it display the mobile versions of other sites? E-mail me at eric at metsgeek dot com to discuss.
New server, woo-hoo! Thanks, guys.
