The weird thing about the bullpen meltdown is that it wasn’t because of a new level of being overworked - at least not collectively. In 2006 the pen hurled 542-2/3 innings. In 2007 that dropped to 511-2/3.
Obviously that meant the starters lasted longer in 2007 - they averaged 5.8 innings per start. So if Schilling or any starter lasted an average of a full 6ip it’d be a slight improvement over the 2007 rotation as a whole.

I would like a non-pelfrey to take that 5th spot. i could live with pelfrey being the 5 because i believe in him and saw some flashes in 07. but i understand ppl not wanting him there at all.
I would be more comfortable knowing pelfrey is starting off 08 in AAA.
the guy has really not had that much success at AAA, and it would be nice to see him get some before coming back up.
Comment posted by sarah on October 31, 2007 at 9:28 pm (#555127)
I think this was discussed, but between Pedro and Duque, we really need a bullet-proof starting pitcher to round out that rotation. You can say whatever you want about Glavine, and hate him for his pathetic performance when we needed him - but the guy is as durable as they come.
No, I’m not saying we should bring him back, but he was a guy that consistently gave you a full season’s work and never broke down.
Comment posted by sheadenizen on October 31, 2007 at 9:30 pm (#555128)
I would definitely take Livan. He is a horse and will give you the innings. I just don’t want the likes of Lawrence, Sele, Lima and Jeremi Gonzalez pitching when Schilling and Duque go down. And I want pelfrey in AAA. Sorry, but although he showed occasional competence, he’s got a ways to go. Does anyone think they’d give SoSo a chance to start again?

clement was pretty darn good from 2003-2005.
in 2005 he was awesome the first half, then got hit in the head with a line drive and stunk the entire 2nd half. i think carl crawford hit it.
in 06, he was pretty bad and then got shut down late for shoulder surgery.

During a conference call this afternoon, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters that he has contacted the agent for David Wright to let him know what the team’s thinking is, with regards to the rumors involving the Mets and Alex Rodriguez.
Minaya, during the conference call…
“I expect to talk to David, because I think it’s only right, because with a free-agent like that there’s going to be speculation and all those things - and usually I try to communicate with my players to tell them exactly what our thinking is…I will tell you that we are very happy with David Wright as our third baseman, I will tell you that Willie is very happy with David Wright as our third baseman…Put it this way, we think we have one of the greatest young players, and greatest young third basemen in the game today.”
Minaya also told reporters that he has yet to speak with Scott Boras during this off-season.

roto says….
Carlos Silva, who could command north of $32 million for four years as a free agent this winter, won’t net the Twins any compensation under the newly unveiled Elias rankings.
The same goes for Kyle Lohse and the Phillies. We’ve railed against them for years and we’ll do it again: the Elias rankings are a complete joke and it’s in everyone’s best interests to base free-agent compensation off another system. It’s ludicrous that Silva and Lohse don’t qualify, yet Troy Percival, who pitched 40 innings during the two years the rankings cover, is a Type B free agent, meaning he could net the Cardinals a supplemental first-round pick. One more example of the idiocy: Robinson Cano and Mike Lowell are rated above Alex Rodriguez among infielders (A-Rod is still a Type A, of course).

We were talking about the Little situation today when someone who has a parent who is neighbors with the pitching coach spoke up. Rick has a big horse stable in the county adjacent to my county and is a well known sports figure (probably the biggest besides a dude who plays QB for Indy, who lives 30 minutes north of Dalton in Tennessee) in the area because of his long baseball career and his sporting goods store in Chattanooga. I guess the best way to describe it was maybe, when Little resigned, it wasn’t a surprise to people who were in the inner circle. I’m sure your right Jessica, the age war had something to do with it.

Excellent point, Jess.
And he gave up like 28 and 21 homers the past two years respectively.
assuming pedro, maine, ollie, duque make up the first four…
I would like a non-pelfrey to take that 5th spot. i could live with pelfrey being the 5 because i believe in him and saw some flashes in 07. but i understand ppl not wanting him there at all.
I would be more comfortable knowing pelfrey is starting off 08 in AAA.
the guy has really not had that much success at AAA, and it would be nice to see him get some before coming back up.
I like Sosa in our bullpen as a righty specialist type. not much more.
if we keep him around, joe smith may start in AAA too.
not sure if it was discussed yet, but Kerry Wood is now a FA….
I would take a shot on him as a reliever, assuming he wants to relieve.
His fastball was back in the high 90s at the end of the year.
OMG, I forgot about Joe Smith. I guess a lot of this will play out in ST. But they better have a bunch of pitchers to audition. I think they should try Humber in the bullpen as well.
The Mets should not be turned off to the idea of converting Pelfrey into a reliever if it’s clear his secondary pitches aren’t good enough to be a starter midway through 2008.
i would definitely take a flyer on wood.
unfortunately he has a ton of teams sniffing around him. he’s gonna get something silly.
i agree, dep….the list of teams for Wood will be long
Someone also mentioned Matt Clement. What’s his story?
Wood would be a terrific replacement for Glavine as a #2.
And it would allow El Duque to move to the pen full-time.
HUGE assumption that Wood will stay healthy though.
Clement is also a free agent and Boston has no plans to re-sign him. VERY risky project.
clement was pretty darn good from 2003-2005.
in 2005 he was awesome the first half, then got hit in the head with a line drive and stunk the entire 2nd half. i think carl crawford hit it.
in 06, he was pretty bad and then got shut down late for shoulder surgery.
he was never able to make it back in 2007 but he was expected to miss most of it anyways.
i think he’s supposed to be healthy, but who knows.
I can’t even remember the last time I saw Clement pitch.
Mid-2006 before he got hurt maybe?
I forgot about that line drive, dep, nice catch….
and yeah, i think it was crawford
yup, i believe he got shut down in Sept 06.
and hasnt pitched at the ML level since.
the guy had great stuff. minor league deal? absolutely.
but i think someone will give him more than that.
Worth a chance as a reclamation project For Peterson if he’s cheap? Work with him in ST and then send him to AAA. Just askin’. I don’t have a clue.
Clement had 12 starts in 2006 for Boston, going 5-5 in 65 innings.
the Cubbies went sour on Clement in 2004 (9-13, but not horrible numbers otherwise) before the BoSox took a chance
I seem to remember Clement (when good) as not giving up many hits and having a very good bb/k ratio
The Nets are now pulling a “Mets” and collapsing at the end! Yikes!
The Nets ALWAYS went through long shooting droughts during games last year. They still have no post game and will just need hot shooting nights or defensive stands to win games.
this is a crazy little game. the bulls are so fast, its crazy.
antoine wright is having himself a nice little game.
does this sound like a GM asking a guy to move? via mc lite
PS!!! Antoine Wright!!!!
those are some great shots the nets are taking this last minute.
way to finish! or not.
Sounds like DW will be playing 3rd base.
Vince Carter being Vince Carter…..ugh!
whoooooooo. thank god we’re going to OT
that was close
Wow….the Nets lucked out. Wallace could have made that shot! At least Carter played “D.”
the nets completely pissed that lead away in the last 1:20. nets need to have a strong OT and get this W
Vince has played good D today. he’s been active.
that lazy dribbling when he got his pocket picked was HORRIBLE!!! i was laughing but it was bad
They sure did, dep. Lots of air balls and let the Bulls steal the ball.
wright! wow
Who is this Wright kid? Not David( lol)….the Nets one.
That’s very interesting about the Elias rankings…
Wow! Lucky shot by jefferson.
Jefferson just got hurt. Oy vey!
we drafted him like 3 drafts ago. outta Texas A&M.
he’s sure having a strong game. very nice to see. he wasnt particularly good in the preseason. but he looks like he wants some minutes.
RJ is shooting very well tonight.
Did he play much last year? I don’t remember him well.
So we resigned Alou and Easley, both moves I like. Anything else I miss?
he played some last year…probly 15+ minutes a game.
he played very little the year before.
he looks different this year, maybe that’s why you dont recognize him. also he’s playing well! lol
he looks much bigger this year too
naw woody, not much besides that.
No wood…that was the signings for the day. Lots of ARod and Schilling chatter.
Where do you stand on each of those guys?
35 of 39 from the line!
thats just awesome. win a lot of games doing that kind of stuff
RJ!!!!
looks like the nets may get this one!!!
nets start the season off strong.
Looks like the Nets pulled this out, dep! yea!
37/41! nice
solid win, we’ll take it.
Knicks don’t get their first spanking until friday.
They start on the road, don’t they Wood?
yeah Shea at Cleveland too.
So Kellen Clemens gets his shot finally. I dotn expect wins with the jets D, just hope Clemens can improve.
Best line of south park was the very last one by butters…….
hey tim whats up
sweet tim, i havent watched it yet. i got it taping at midnight
Whats up everyone? Noticed some of you were a little peeved at how the Dodgers handled the Little situation. From what I heard today, from someone who knows their pitching coach, Little informed his coaches right after the season he was debating his future and warned his coaches there may be changes
Very interesting. I can definitely see Little not being sure about wanting to stay on the job after the AGE WAR! the Dodgers had this year.
I’m sure your right Jessica, the age war had something to do with it.
wood? you still there?
