The Game

With the news that Orlando Hernandez was heading for the 15-day disabled list on account of bursitis in his shoulder, the Mets reluctantly called up Chan Ho Park from New Orleans. Park was one of the last cuts at the tail end of spring training, and he didn’t exactly do anything to impress while pitching in Triple-A. In four starts, Park went 3-1 (good) with a 7.29 ERA (bad). He struck out 20 and walked just five in 21.0 innings (good) but gave up six homeruns in that same span (bad). For better or worse, the Mets were stuck with him tonight, and he didn’t disappoint. Oh, unless you were expecting him to pitch well, in which case he most certainly *did* disappoint.

Things started auspiciously enough for Park, who retired the first eight Marlins he faced, three via strikeout. After that, things quickly spiraled out of control. First, Park allowed a single to the opposing pitcher, Scott Olsen. He then proceeded to walk Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla on eight pitches to load the bases. Miguel Cabrera followed by singling on a ball that Damion Easley got a glove on, scoring Olsen and Ramirez. Mike Jacobs then dunked a flyball in between Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran that scored Uggla and ultimately went for a double. Josh Willingham capped off the inning by knocking in Cabrera and Jacobs with a bloop single to center. Two walks, four weakly hit balls, five runs in.

In the bottom of the third, the Mets managed to get two runners into scoring position thanks to singles by Reyes and Beltran followed by a double-steal, but David Wright flied out to right to end the threat. With the Mets failing to get any offense going, the Marlins padded their lead in the fourth on solo homeruns by Alfredo Amezaga and Ramirez.

The Mets finally broke through in the fifth, as Carlos Beltran smacked his sixth homerun of the year — a solo job — to left field, narrowing the gap to 7-1 Marlins. Not to be outdone, the Fish got that run back in the top of the sixth on a couple of singles, a sacrifice bunt, and an atrocious throw to first by Paul Lo Duca.

Down 8-1, the Mets got an actual rally going in their half of the sixth. Wright led off by reaching first on a Cabrera error, and advanced to third on a Moises Alou double. Comeback Player of the Month Shawn Green knocked in both baserunners with a single to right, pulling the Mets to within five runs. Three batters later, Reyes knocked Green in with a double of his own, and the Mets were down 8-4.

The Mets seemed to carry their momentum into the bottom of the seventh, as Beltran and Delgado led off with back-to-back singles. Olsen was pulled in favor of Randy Messenger (aka Slim with the Tilted Brim), who fanned Wright and then induced a broken bat double play out of Alou to diffuse the threat.

After the Marlins scratched together another run in the eighth, the Mets mounted another rally in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Damion Easley singled to center and advanced to second on an Endy Chavez pinch-groundout. Reyes then hit a sharp grounder to Cabrera at third that took a bad hop and turned into an RBI double. Lo Duca atoned for his throwing error by blooping a single into left-center to score Reyes, setting the stage for Beltran, who was 4-for-4 at that point. Another homerun would pull the Mets to within one run, but it wasn’t to be, as Beltran struck out to end the inning.

Scott Schoeneweis came on to pitch the top of the ninth and threw a scoreless frame, though not without allowing a couple of guys on base in typical Schoeneweis fashion. In their last licks, the Mets did little but lick their own wounds, going down in order on a couple of grounders and a strikeout. Former Met Henry Owens picked up the save, and the Mets stumbled back into second place by a half game.

I tend to ratchet up the sarcasm during the loss write-ups; it’s the only thing that gets me through them.

I want to see Gotay for awhile over Easley. This sucks, though.

De ja vu of last year with Lima and less with Gonzalez. I am hoping not to hear Randolph say “he is my starter for now” and just jettison Park to AAA or release him. They should bring up Sosa without experimenting with Park more (I prefer Humber, but it ain’t going to happen). The game last night was not an anomoly; he has pitched poorly all spring.

A number of Metsgeeks like Lucienic are convinced that Owens won’t hold up - they figure out his delivery, his fastball flattens, he is prone to injury. They may be right. But he looks pretty good so far. I wish he was a Met and Burgos was developing more in AAA.

I am not too optimistic about Delgado, but its time for Wright to step up!

Looks like the Mets have lost hope in AHern, understandable, but hopefully he’ll get traded so he can try to start fresh.

Anyone provide further analysis of what went wrong with Park? That is, what changed between batter eight and nine? He cruised for eight, gave up one hit, then walked the bases loaded on eight pitches? Mechanical? Physical? I’m sure I’m not the only one here thinking this is a problem that originates in his head. This isn’t a reason to demote or release Park. Instead, put him on the DL, keep him in Queens, and have him throw bullpen rehab with The Jacket.

The defense blew this game. Park did OK. He pitched out of the jam and the mets failed him. After that he tried to throw harder and he lost the movement on his pitches. Not to mention DW not hitting at all. I have to admit I booed him and so did Shea after the third time he couldnt get a hit.

  9. Comment posted by Danny on May 1, 2007 at 8:04 am (#320398)

When you boo David Wright you boo yourself.

I agree, Chip didn’t help himself by loading the bases, but then he made pitches and the defense abandoned him. It was a team effort in going down, and also some very nice luck for the Marlins. They hit 3 straight nubbers and got 5 runs out of it. This is baseball and that happens. I like the fact that the Mets bats showed signs of life, and I think they come out pissed and smack Ricky Nolasco around tonight.

That would make me feel better.

This team could be scary if the 4th and 5th spots in the lineup weren’t giant sucking black holes.

Last night was like LimaTime without the hot wife (although that is possible, don’t know much about Park’s family life).

I must say I loved that he was getting bombed while Omar was in the booth - it was so obvious that he (and to a lesser extent Kieth) were really trying not to bash the guy while the game went to hell

Just think what will happen when those two start hitting?

    David Wright…6 RBI’s In a month?
0 homeruns? It IS officially time to start panicking with him. Can we move him out of the 5th spot please! It’s not just this horrible April. His second half last year was brutal as well, only we didn’t go crazy about It because we ran away and
maybe we felt there wasn’t the level of Intensity that he needed because of that. His swing Is loopy? That’s what they have to tell us. And…now the boos come.
Also, he’s looking a little like Gregg Jefferies did when he struggled by smashing his helmet down way too much. Remember how all the vets hated that about Jefferies? It shows Wright’s obvious frustration level. What If May 15th comes around and we still are seeing this?

At least DW is still maintaining a .370 OBP. You want to talk black holes, look at these two guys:

    Paul Loduca: .237/.294/.289
    Carlos Delgado: .188/.262/.260

The climb back to respectability is a lot longer for those two dodes. Still, we’re leading the league in OBP even with the two and four slots putting up .294 and .262.

  20. Comment posted by metswin3122 on May 1, 2007 at 10:54 am (#320560)

I’m not for benching Wright or Delgado. However, it’s coming to a point where you simply can’t have those two batting 4th and 5th.

  21. Comment posted by Dave in Spain on May 1, 2007 at 10:56 am (#320564)

What happened to Park? He said in an article on Mets.com that after he allowed the opposing pitcher to get on base, he kept thinking about that AB thru the next few batters. You just can´t do that, and Park was apparently really mad at himself. That said, he was only pitching over Sosa because Sosa had pitched the night before and it was Parks night to pitch. I think we´ll see Sosa next time thru the rotation.

That’s true. I guess if you want to look on the bright side, this team is very close to 1st place with (counting the pitcher’s spot) four pretty much automatic outs in the lineup.

When you go to a game and pay $90 dollars for a seat and $7.50 for a beer, you can boo anyone you want to! Something is very wrong with Wright presently. Maybe he should sell that 7 million dollar Chelsea loft and move back to Queens and concentrate on baseball.

Never made sense to me. Is Wright not trying? Do you think booing sends him the message that he’s not getting hits? Think he’s unaware?

This is a guy who had to be kept from taking too much home BP because it was tiring him out in the minors. You want to boo, fine. But it isn’t helping anyone or anything. Why exactly are you at the game, if not to help the team and enjoy watching?

When I was a 15 year old kid me and a couple of buddies of mine saw the Mets in May of 1981. The Mets were dreadful and about 3 thousand fans were at the game. We snuck down to the box seats and sat next to “Mrs Met”. This lady was about 60 years old and had all the Met’s memorabila on from the glory days of 1969 and 1973. In the first inning the Met’s made a couple of errors and we began to boo. This women was beside herself! “Why would you boo”, she stated, “the Met’s don’t need fans like you”. At this point, an older, sage, bald guy behind us said, “no lady, these are exactly the kind of fans the Met’s need.” The point is, that unless the fans express themself, nothing changes.

Hoping like hell that Alou’s shoulder is OK. Having four regulars in your lineup hitting .350+ is maybe the only way to survive having automatic outs in the 4/5 spots. Losing Alou for any period of time will not help matters.

That said, at least we have excellent options in the OF.

I fear that what we are seeing is a sort of worst-case scenario… a couple of the key older vets - including a starting pitcher - prove to be fragile, a couple of other guys slumping badly, and Pelfrey not showing that he’s ready yet. Worse, Valentin’s injury exposes an area of organizational weakness… ML-ready middle infielders.

I don’t think that Delgado and Wright have just suddenly lost their talent, they’ll certainly hit, eventually. But you just can’t keep trotting out 2, 4, and 5 hitters with those kinds of numbers and expect to win consistently. Unfortunately, the guy who might have made sense to move up in the lineup - Alou - is getting an MRI today.

Assuming Alou is out at least a couple of days, my lineup would look like this:

    Reyes
    Chavez
    Beltran
    Delgado
    Green
    Wright
    Easley
    LoDuca

So by booing you prevented the mets from making errors?

I’m sure the players appreciate that!

I mean Beltran last year had to almost be restrained to take that 1st curtain call, you could just see the love he had for the fans that boo’d to show him the error of his ways.

boy, there’s a lot of negativity/panic on here after one tough loss. let’s all take a deep breath. we knew el duque wasn’t going to pitch 30 games and that our backup options weren’t good. we knew alou was fragile. easley’s more than serviceable as a replacement for valentin for a while. delgado’s lost a bit, but there’s no way he’s putting up a .262 obp over the course of the year. lo duca sucks and we all know it. so what? reyes, beltran, alou, green, maine will regress. delgado and lo duca will pick things up. nothing to worry about. we’ll still win 86-92 games and get into the playoffs. no big deal. and as for david wright, the guy is a phenomenal hitter. seriously. he’ll be fine. his obp is like .385. he doesn’t suck and he’s only going to improve. let’s chill out.

  41. Comment posted by waxman on May 1, 2007 at 3:41 pm (#321005)

wright has in fact sucked since the homerun derby last year. his swing is now a loopy uppercut.
so until his mechanics are fixed, wrights numbers will be way down. randolph should move wright down in
the batting order and they should Fire rick downs.

Really? Then how do you explain this:

    David Wright, Sept/Oct. 2006: .371/.424/.551

He must have remembered how to hit in September, then started thinking about the Home Run Derby again when the playoffs started. Sheesh.

    Hey Dep,

I haven’t been on them the past two games, and was thinking exactly the same thing. Gotta wait out this slump and jump back on when the lineup is functioning normally.

Jeez, the Valentin injury worries me. The guy had just become the glue, for some reason.
