ESPN.com: El Duque Injures Calf

Already missing Pedro Martinez, the New York Mets suddenly might have to replace pitcher Orlando Hernandez in Game 1 of the playoffs because of a calf injury, too.

El Duque felt discomfort in his right calf while he was jogging in the outfield Tuesday as the NL East champions tuned up for their division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 40-year-old right-hander, who had been scheduled to start New York’s postseason opener, was pulled off the field and was headed for an MRI exam.

“Obviously, we’re up in the air on who our starter is right now,” Mets manager Willie Randolph said. “We have some options, but we’re going to wait and see how he feels.”

Could be John Maine. Maybe Darren Oliver. Who knows.

Eric Simon has far too much time on his hands. He sleeps upside-down, keeps people as pets, and can be found on the internets at Amazin' Avenue or bothered directly at eric@metsgeek.com.

i don’t think the skanks will have too much trouble with the kittens, unfortunately: the instant they take a lead i guarantee i will shut it off…

you wanna know why I’m not nervous? ok, I’ll you all anyway!! lol

so far (and I knwo it’s just 2 games), the playoffs have NOT gone as the experts have expected….Santana losing at home in the noisy Metrodome? the Cards shutting out the Padres (ok, 5-1 now, but you get the point)?

ANYTHING can and will happen in the playoffs, so I’m actually happy the Mets are now viewed as underdogs….it’ll make it all the more sweeter to win!

as Mex has pointed out, it’s now a whole new season!!

Agreed, ‘71. I just got off the phone with my dad, and he pointed out Peavy getting lit up as a reminder that anything can happen in the playoffs.

If the Mets don’t at least make the World Series in a very weak NL, this season will be a failure; let’s face it.

I can’t agree with this at all. The season has been a wonderful ride — nothing like it since the 80s. And I think the foundation of the team is strong enough for us to compete seriously for years to come.

With two fifths of our anticipated playoff starting rotation unavailable, and a third pitcher distracted by personal matters, and two possible replacements a rookie and very young pitcher, I can’t see how the season thereupon becomes a failure if we don’t make the WS. Bad luck happens. And meanwhile, Reyes and Wright will get seasoning for the future.

wow idk what to say, im worried but im not that worried…maine is on regular rest if he pitches tommorrow…i have trust in maine…if duque is hurt for the whole nlds then the mets should pik up oliver perez…i think he has a excellent start in him

tomorrow is huge…the Mets need early momentum to overcome a developing snake-bitten mentality. Maine has to throw strikes…the Dodgers are a very patient lineup…and the inevitable dinger he gives up should be his usual no man on base variety. With or without El Duque, this team has a lot of fight in them. Their starting pitching has been underwhelming all year. But their pen is solid and they have a fine defense and the best offense in the league - especially against a righty…and the 2 Dodgers southpaws (Kuo and Stultz) are not Santana and Liriano by a long shot..ie

What happens, happens. It’s part of the game. Mets fans know we’ve had many question marks throughout the year with the starting staff, but Willie, Omar, and Rick have done a great job. 97 wins, peoples. As Mets fans, we know we’re not born with Championship Spoons in our mouths. We. Work. Hard. We. Root. Hard. And so does this team. I love ‘em! I’m proud of ‘em. And whatever happens, win or lose, WS Champs or not, this Mets team of 2006 will not roll over. I’m glad a lot of the guys will be getting postseason experience–starting a great tradition for 2007 and beyond, as Omar will only improve the team. I’ll be there Thursday night and expect to have a great time, as 2006 is far from over. If it’s Maine, Glavine, Trachsel, and then for the theoretical Game 4 (to be pitched by committee, a la Perez’s last start vs. Washington), we’re going to come out fighting. LET’S GO METS!!!

How can this season be a disappointment when before the season we werent suppose to be even here by most MLB people in the know?

Hmmm, Do we call back Bannister, Pelfrey, or Humber?

I say call back Humber, take a chance on the kid. Can’t do any worse then Trashel
