Make A Move

Endy Chavez is a fine defensive player. Unfortunately, he doesn’t bring much else to the table. And that is why it is time for the Mets to make a decision and free Lastings Milledge.

Maybe it is only for a week or two. But the Mets need to do something until Carlos Beltran is ready to play. And if he doesn’t think he is, they need to DL him retroactively to April 22nd (his last gameplay was a pinch hit on the 21st) and get Lastings up here.

The Mets are talking about Victor Diaz if Beltran is DLed. The point of bringing up an outfielder would be to play him everyday so that Chavez is not starting. Diaz does not help, unless the plan is to play Xavier Nady in centerfield, which well, shouldn’t be anyone’s plan.

This team is getting killed by Willie having his hands tied by only having one CF on the roster. This was evident Monday night when Endy Chavez came up with first and third and two outs late in a 3-2 game and was allowed to hit. Personally, I would have pinch hit Woowdard and let him play CF (he played 12 1/3 innings in CF last year, mostly because of the fact that the Mets backup centerfield last year, when Mike Cameron was also injured, was Gerald Williams), but I cannot blame Willie for not wanting to take out Chavez, who is a major defensive plus, for a defensive negative (whether you went with Woodward or pushed Nady to ccenter with Woodward in RF).

But that’s why Chavez, a great bench player for his defensive skills, needs to be removed from the starting lineup. And Lastings Milledge’s hot start in Triple-A gives the Mets an opportunity to reward him for his play and get him some exposure to major league pitcher. Even though it may be only a week or two before Lastings get sent back down, this is a decision that needs to be made. Lastings will get sent back down when Beltran is healthy, but it should be made clear to him that this is the case no matter what his performance is because he needs to play everyday, whether in the majors or in Triple-A. And since, when Beltran comes back, he won’t, he needs to be sent back down, for the time being.

As for starting his arbitration clock, I fully expect Milledge to be on this team full-time by August 1st (and I hope at least by August 31st, so he can be on the playoff rotser). Also, Milledge, with only a week or two, will not qualify for Super 2 status and will still have 3 full years before arbitration (assuming he is only up for a week or two).

And the final issue involved here is that Milledge is not on the 40 man roster. To me, that’s an easy one. And the answer is Royce Ring.

Royce has only pitched 4.2 innings this year, and while striking out 7, he has given up 2 walks, 10 hits and has a 7.71 ERA. More importantly, the Mets already have two left-handers on their 25-man roster and have Heath Bell as their immediate bullpen call-up if someone gets hurt (or they could go to 6 pitchers). Also, Royce Ring was left open to the Rule 5 draft two years ago and was not picked up and since then, hasn’t done much to impress, in the minors or majors. While there is a chance he might be picked up, I would doubt it. And even if he did, as pointed out for the reasons above, he’s not much of a loss.

There are a few other feasible options (like Fortunato) and Milledge will eventually have to be added soon, so I don’t see why the Mets can’t do this now when they need him. It’s time for the Mets to make some type of decision regarding Beltran, so that they can get the roster spot to add an outfielder to the roster.

And if they make the right choice, we’ll get to see another part of the future, even if it might be only for a week.

You want to blame someone. Blame whoever stretches the Mets before games. Three Hamstring injuries in a month tells me something is wrong.

Good point, although I thought it was only 2 — Floyd pulled an oblique.

You would think that a pitcher’s legs would be plenty warm and loose by the fifth inning.

chris, also thanks for your insight on the degree of hamstring pulls! You know more about muscles strains than I ever care to! Next time a met goes down with an injury, I will ask your opinion!

Haha, try one more time, Lew.

Alomar’s the first base coach now, and was the crappy bench coach last season.

    You’re almost there, though!

Yeah that’s the guy! You know the worst thing is I looked it up!

Forgot to mention (and this is for Met fans more than the players), but part of the ‘quasi-apoclaypse’ we avoided today was suffering through not being able to take advantage of Armando Benitez in the 9th/10th innings today while our “Sandman” craters.

I can only imagine how sour we all would have been had the Mets lost this game.

BTW – Micelli did his best to blow the game to the Skanks, being yanked w/ 2 outs, leaving Based “Juiced” for Juiceman Sheffield – who grounded out to end the game. Ballgame over. Theeeeeee Yankkeees Lose…

According to this, Zambrano is definitly out for the Braves series. This makes good sense all the way around.

It also suggests that A) Bannister’s injury is just like Chris described it; B) we will probably see a position player this weekend and his name WILL NOT be Milledge; and C) whoever comes up goes back down on Tues so either Maine, Lima, or Gonzalez can pitch.

There is one big factor in Maine’s favor — he is the only one of the three on the 40 man. So, no roster moves required. Throw that in with the strong game he hurled today, and I think he is the big winner ladies and gentlemen!

Luckily he will get to pitch at home against a not so good team.

    Gotta love it!

I think what hurt was the extra hustle that he put in for the double because he was thinking triple or it could have been putting on the breaks to settle for a double. It is hard to pinpoint things with muscle because sometimes very random things can cause them to get injured, whick I hope backs me up on.

I agree, bring up Milledge. How long can we sit and watch Endy Chavez TRY to hit a baseball. The Mets are already weak at 2nd base and witht their starting pitching being a bit on the older side(and having Zambrano in it),I think they should try and run as far away with the division before Atlanta gets hot,and we know they will.Imagine watching a playoff game with Zambrano pitching,Chavez in center and Anderson playing 2nd…….ughhhhhhhhh.

I cheated. I looked into some old textbooks and I emailed an ex who is a trainer at a juco in Arizona and told her to check the injury out. She wrote back and said the same thing I thought was up with the injury. She said I should drive down to the Airport in Atlanta and see if Bannister is on crutches and, if so, how much he’s relying on them than iI could make a good guess on how bad it is. She said I probably know the airline (Delta) and the flight number (also know that) anyway, I probably can find an arrival time (150am) and meet them in Atlanta. But I have to write a paper on nuclear Energy and work early tomorrow so im not going to go

Good point, although I thought it was only 2 — Floyd pulled an oblique.

the 3 hamstring injuries have been Bannister, Beltran and………Zambrano.

also, I was on Norfolks site and noticed that Blake Mcginley is on the DL because of an elbow problem. Does anyone know what happened?

Or did you miss his three hits today?

as i set here and procrastinate, I see that Endy Chavez owns a certain braves pitcher we face on saturday. This might be the only time i’ll get to say this but Endy Chavez has John Thomsons number. 9 for 19, 3 xtra basehits and a 1.158 ops

Hey folks, I was at all three games. I think Beltran is coming back soon. He was on deck when Reyes got the hit in the 11th. Willie pulled him back after the hit and let Oliver hit for himself.

I must say the Bonds HR was probably one of the most exciting crowd experiences I’ve ever had. The crowd went nuts when he got on deck, and he cranked the HR while the crowd was chanting Barry… very cool moment. That guy really is clutch…a 99 mph Wagner pitch.

i’m telling you john maine is the answer…this guy was a big prospect for the orioles and kinda fizzled with them and the orioles never really agve him a shot after that…he still only 24….i think the change of scenery and given a shot he might suceed big time, then more than likely if zambrano continues to fail when bannister comes back he takes victors spot..this is assuming maine pitches alot better than zambrano which i hope happens…

anyways most likely bannister goes on the dl…we call up maine

also how about endy chavez, he did great today and has looked excellent defensively

by the way i really hate jose valentin

I agree with bringing up Milledge for a couple weeks. It certainly hurt the offense. Even though Chavez is hitting better, he’s really no offensive threat. Milledge can or will bring defense AND offense to Shea. Great Idea!!!

  14. Comment posted by pbc on April 27, 2006 at 3:26 pm (#35804)

looking back at the way the mets handled reyes and wright in recent years, it seems unlikely that we’ll be seeing milledge at shea until late this summer – i’d bet we see pelfrey before milledge, assuming he continues his success in binghamton. the mets promoted reyes and wright when they were ready to start them everyday – unless someone suffers a season-ending injury, there’s nowhere that lastings can start and play everyday. the kid is going to be a star – calling him up too early and not giving him regular playing time in ny will curse him – we’ll all declare him a bust if he goes his first week without a hit. when he comes up, he needs to know the team has the confidence to play him everyday and not feel any extra pressure to impress.

i’m not thrilled with chavez, either, but he’s not costing us any defensive mistakes, any offense he supplies is a bonus until beltran gets back – the team is pitching well and hitting when needed. we’re in first place, let’s not feel the need to make any huge changes this early in the season when things are going well.
