Minor League Recap

AAA Norfolk Tides

  • The Tides dropped yet another ballgame, this one 6-5 in twelve innings at the hands of the Rochester Red Wings (Twins). The Tides had a 5-0 lead as Jason Scobie kept the Wings under wraps for the first five innings. Things fell apart shortly thereafter, as Rochester put up three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game. Heath Bell picked up the loss in relief, allowing two hits, two walks and an unearned run while striking out two. Lastings Milledge had a very encouraging game, going 2-for-3 with two singles and three walks. He now has nine walks to just seven strikeouts in 47 at-bats to go along with eight extra-base hits. He’s batting .404/.533/.638. Kazuo Matsui singled in his only at-bat and was pinch hit for his next time up. Jeff Keppinger was 2-for-5 with a walk, and Victor Diaz was 3-for-6.
  • AA Binghamton Mets

  • The B-Mets lost an eleven-inning affair 4-3 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays). Anderson Garcia picked up the loss in relief of starter Miguel Pinango, who pitched 5.1 solid innings before giving way to Eddie Camacho, who pitched masterfully, no-hitting the Cats through four innings while striking out three. Carlos Gomez went 3-for-5 with a double, Brett Harper went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, Jonathan was 1-for-5 with two RBIs, and Andy Wilson was 0-for-5.
  • High-A St. Lucie Mets

  • The Mets did their best impression of the big club, losing 4-0 to the Daytona Cubs. Mike Pelfrey allowed his first two runs of the season, one on a homerun, and picked up his first professional loss. He actually pitched pretty well, allowing five hits and no walks over five innings while striking out five. He ERA ballooned to 1.12. Matt Lindstrom allowed five baserunners and two runs in an inning of work. Ambiorix Concepcion went 1-for-4, Mike Carp was 0-for-2 with a walk, Alhaji Turay was 1-for-3 with a double and Jesus Flores went 1-for-4.
  • Low-A Hagerstown Suns

  • The Suns joined the rest of the organization in losing tonight. In their case it was 5-4 to the West Virginia Power (Brewers). Jeffrey Landing started the game for the Suns and got lit up, allowing six hits including two homeruns, four walks and four runs in 5.2 innings. Fernando Martinez went 0-for-2 with a walk. Hector Pellot went 0-for-5 and is batting .157 on the year, and Leivi Ventura went 3-for-4. Elvis Cruz and Rafael Arroyo each homered in the ninth to pull the game to within one before Pellot grounded out to end the game.

As I stated in the other thread… it may be early, but, at the moment, we might be witnessing Milo do “The Leap”.

The uptick in walks is remarkable, especially for a 20 year old in AAA. He has almost as many in 47 AB’s as he did last year in 193!

I love the use of adjectives.

      West Virginia Power (Brewers)

      GO POWER BREWERS!!

Fine. I give in. Lets see Lastings at the All-Star Break. I still think he needs more time.

One guy two nights ago said that Lastins Milledge had no plate discline and also probably will not develop any hr type power I think his name was Emad or Eman something like that well he was way off. If he keeps this up he will be clearly the most dominating player in minor league ball up until the time he leaves there to become a Met. Speed, PoP, some great defense, and a major threat on the bases. Maybe he can lead off, something Jose Reyes has yet to do still first ball swing at sinkers almost a ft off the ground.

Fernando Martinez, is looking really good even though he did go hitless tonight. In the upcoming years it will be fun to watch his development as he grows up to become probably a nasty power hitter. I wonder what position the Mets will play him. I doubt he stays in CF since Beltran is there for the next 6 years and even if he wasn’t Milledge has far more range then he does.
I guess RF if Nady or Diaz don’t do their jobs, maybe first base to take the job of Delgado who should be wrapping up his fine career by then.

It was funny today watching the Mets and Braves seeing mostly nothing by white players on the Braves, and pretty much Latin domination on the Mets field. If Im not mistaken, Everyday starters i think the Braves only has two minority player starting for them, and thats Edgar Renteria, and Jones when everyone is healhty. In this day and age isn’t that kind of hard to do?? Most teams are exactly opposite especially big city teams like Atlanta is.

Hey how funny was it to see that pitcher from the Brewers the other day that the Braves traded to get Kolb from the previous year, only to have and watch Kolb stink it up worse then Looper did for us, only to I guess cut Kolb and then he goes back to the Brewers. So pretty much the Braves traded away a highly coveted young power arm for free. You got to love that.

I hope when Cliff Floyd comes back and Diaz is able to return as well we cut that crappy left fielder out there player for us right now. Has he gotten a hit yet?

      Moves to make –

      Jose Valentin GONE.
Call up Keppinger to take his place

      Jorge Julio to AAA
Call up Victor Diaz to take his place

Leave Lastings Milledge at AAA, the season isn’t even a month old yet.

I am just glad to see that Pelfrey pitched. I was getting worried about him skipping a start. He did go only 5 innings- does anyone know why? Also, everyone keeps talking about Milledge at the break or in the second half, but where would he play. I assume most think that he would play right field for Nady, but what if Nady is playing solidly still [obviously he is not going to have the stats he has now all season]. Would Milledge even be a significant upgrade over Nady at that point. He would probably be a power drop off, no? I am just unsure if the upgrade would be significant enough to force his way into the lineup. Everyone always refers to the Wright callup, but Wright was replacing Ty Wig who was hard nosed but offensively subpar. Plus, the team was not in a playoff race. Am I missing something with this whole issue? Please feel free to sway me.

With each game, FMartinez looks like he has a disciplined batting eye. I have less doubt about his ability to hit the ball hard or hit for power. He looks like the genuine article.

    7. Comment posted by Jose Reyes, RBI Machine on April 20, 2006 at 2:43 am (#34242)

Really, Fernando’s performance at this point has been nothing short of spectacular. Not only is he putting up those stats, he’s leading the entire team in basically everything… doubles, steals, slugging and OPS.

He’s behind one guy in OBP, but he only has 12 at bats thus far. This isn’t the product of an offensive park or a few romps, folks. His OPS is good for 11th in the league. And he’s 17 years old.

In other Mets related prospect news, Yusmeiro Petit is getting bounced around for the Albuquerque Isotopes. He’s got a good ERA at 3.86, but in 16 innings has allowed 19 hits, 4 home runs, and has a bb-k ratio of 5-10.

Nice to see Victor Diaz hitting in AAA again. I really feel like he was pressing in the limited at-bats he was getting. The guy should be starting somewhere.

Lastings is off to a nice start but is anyone concerned about his lack of baserunning prowess? He seems to generate a lot of CSs for a player with his speed, not to mention the pickoffs. Also, last night he was on base 5 times and didn’t come around once. Granted, it is just one game and he does rely on others to bring him around but it just seems like his game needs more work before he’s patrolling the OF of Shea.

Fernando Martinez was pinch-hit for in last night’s game. Does anyone know if it is injury related?

      From mets.com:

Checking in: Mike Pelfrey, the Mets’ first-round selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, missed his last start for Class A St. Lucie of the Florida State League with a sprained ankle.

Pelfrey, who has made two starts for St. Lucie and has not allowed an earned run over 11 innings, is expected to pitch Wednesday night at Daytona. He is 1-0 with 13 strikeouts and one walk.

Albuquerque is the absolute WORST pitcher’s park in all of baseball (outside of possibly Lancaster and High desert in the Calif League) More runs get scored per game in Albuqueque than in Coors Field

If Milledge continues to hit this well, I’d like to see Minaya call him up for the last week of June, when we have almost all interleague away games, much like the Brewers did with Fielder last year. That way Floyd can DH and Milledge can get some experience at the MLB level without significantly impacting his service time. If he hits like a bat out of hell, we can find room for him, having too many good hitters isn’t really a problem, or maybe even make a trade to make room for him. If he hits poorly, it’s only a week, and I don’t think it would effect him much.

As JPWF said, in 2004, the isotopes park was the most extreme hitters park in the most extreme league in professional baseball. Take those unadjusted stats with a grain of salt.

I agree Emad, I think Milo might be pulling a David Wright on the org this year — giving them no choice but to bring him up post-AS break. Really, if he is hitting .350 and someone goes down in July/Aug – how can they not bring him up?

The plate discipline is astonishing. I knew he would get better, did not think it would be that quickly!

This is also what is good to see with Fernado Martinez. The kid is 17 and has a very good batting eye in mid-A ball. That is a far cry from some of the “super prospects” we have had who couldn’t tell the strike zone from I-95!

Because cliff floyd, carlos beltran, and xavier nady are all better than ty wiggington was. if one of them gets hurt or nady completely falls apart i’m all for milledge coming up. but if he’s not going to get regula at-bats lets keep him in the minors.

ugh. i’m still annoyed that valentin has a guaranteed major league contract.

Eric – I love this column. I was wondering if you could add recaps of how Y. Petit and G. Hernandez are doing. I’m always checking their boxes to make sure they’re stinking it up. So far looks like they’ve been pretty average.
