The Ramirez Conundrum

Here’s what we know about Manny.

1. He’s an awful baserunner.

2. Despite playing in the easiest LF, his defense is arguably the worst in baseball. Think Roger Cedeno without the speed. According to advanced defensive metrics, Manny’s defense is so bad, it takes away two full wins from his offense.

3. Ah, his offense. He’s a great offensive player. No doubt about it. But look at this trend. Here’s what Manny has done away from Fenway, a noted hitters park, the last four years:

2002 .360/.458/.635
2003 .320/.405/.595
2004 .301/.392/.584
2005 .280/.363/.573

While Fenway has historically favored right-handed hitters, Shea has not. The park factors for the last few years show that while left-handed hitters like Floyd (who has a .297/.379/.515 career line there) benefit from playing at Shea, right-handed hitters do significantly worse.

Does that mean Manny won’t be better than Floyd next year? Of course not. Manny will be better, but is that slight upgrade worth all the Mets have to pay to get him? For all of you not keeping track, that is:

1. The $13.5MM gap between their salaries.
2. A $20MM salary for ages 35 and 36.
3. Aaron Heilman, who has only 1 year of ML service but who has developed into if nothing else, an effective reliever.
4. Top 20 prospect in baseball Lastings Milledge.

If Manny is a Met, Omar Minaya would have lied to us. Bringing in Manny means he doesn’t care about pitching and defense. Bringing Manny means not building through the farm. Bringing Manny means exactly what Omar told us he wouldn’t do. Its throwing money at the present, and completely forgetting about the future.

I read in Newsday today that the Oakland As may trade Zito since they signed Loaiza,
but they want Milledge. I would prefer to use Millege for a top pitcher than
Manny. We have enough hitting. Pitching wins you a World Series, not hitting.

Call me sentimental, but Cliff has played hard for all the years he’s been here. I feel he deserves to reap the benefits of said effort, not to be traded for an indifferent aging superstar. We need better starting pitching, another solid bullpen arm, a solid catcher and Matsui to NOT be a part of this team.

Emad, I agree completely, with the exception of Matsui. He’s not as big an issue as some make him out to be, especially if he bats 7th or 8th in the lineup. Sure, many of us are frustrated at the prospect of Willie remaining stubborn/ignorant, and keeping him in the 2 slot (which we can all agree should be designated for Beltran).

Also, an article on Mets.com alludes to the Mets seeking a back-up catcher and using the saved money (that would otherwise be spent on signing RaHern/Molina) to shore up the bullpen.

I think that this is precisely the best time to trade Floyd. And Trachsel/Benson for that matter. Judging from the contracts being offered to Konerko and the one signed by Loaiza, there is a clear heavy demand for sluggers and innings-eaters. On the other side, it seems that prospects are being less valued than they normally are. This is the perfect market to acquire some promising youngsters. I would not be inclined to trade Floyd, but if I can pick up a Kotchman/Kearns level player, I would go for it.

Because Kearns did so well when they had to option him to AAA for a month last year? Or bc you got tured of chanting MVP early last year? Or Kotchman as a backup in case Delgado falters you can try to get 10 HRs in 100 games like he got in AAA last year. Did you think before you suggested trading Floyd for these two, or was it just easier for you not to?

PM, ya know, I mean trade Floyd for a backup 1b when we just traded fo a bigtime 1b, makes no sense. Its like was he even paying attention the last week to mets baseball…

I just don’t understand. Don’t ya’ll want to see Milledge play when Floyd tears a muscle putting on his jersey prior to the first spring training game?

FireWillie, you are making me laugh hard, this fan who suggested that mustve been in Australia for the last week. if we trade floyd we should try to get a PITCHER

Trading Floyd or Milledge should be done with the greatest of consideration!

It changes the future of the Mets for years to come… in ways the acquistions of Wagner and Delgado do not.

I don’t think the Red Sox would even WANT Floyd. I’m even puzzled why their so after Milledge, especially with the racist history of that organization.

good points Emad, boston is very known to be very racist town

    Fire Willie,

I said a Kotchman/Kearns level player (young, promising player who was once a top prospect and who may have lost some luster), not necessarily those two in particular. I would agree that Kotchman would not be a good match right now, but I would still think about it.

I think I would pull the trigger on a Floyd-Kearns deal. There are several reasons why it would make sense – including the fact that we would hold Kearns for more years, his youth, his relatively superior durability, and his salary.

As for your cheapshot insult, do you always display such charm around others? Or are you just trying to endear yourself to me?

  14. Comment posted by fire willie on November 30, 2005 at 1:21 am (#18493)

Thank you I’m glad you think I’m charming, too.
So Omar is building for now, yet you want to dismantle the team for a 4A type player… Isn’t that what Nady is, a “young, promising player who was once a top prospect and who may have lost some luster”? So trade away the guy that carried the team last year for a guy who carried Louisville for July with his big 10 HRs. Otherwise, the 240 he hit looks really great in Shea, he Diaz and Nady can all go out to a diner and talk about how promising they all once were and if anyone can spare any luster.
    Floyd kicks ass

Rask, I mean nothing by it, its just when you say to trade for a backup 1b in the same week that you get Delgado you have to wonder, no offense though, just baseball..

  16. Comment posted by Dennis on November 30, 2005 at 8:43 am (#18551)

“cheap” is relative. “cheap” probably means “not milledge”. no reason now for minaya to over-extend for manny. but i do believe red sox are quite willing to deal with mets.

(and could milledge then get zito? a bit of a pipe dream but quien sabe).

  17. Comment posted by fire willie on November 30, 2005 at 12:05 pm (#18576)

Not only could Milledge get Zito, but so could time and patience; he’s a FA next year.

  18. Comment posted by Ray in Middlebury on November 30, 2005 at 12:33 pm (#18586)

Good work guys but the real way to look at Manny for Milledge et al is this. Milledge has better minor league stats than Bernie Williams did at his age plus he has a cannon for an arm (his throws from the outfield have been clocked at 96MPH!!!) So the trade is really Manny and his money & baggage for 3 yrs. or a younger, faster, cannon armed Bernie Williams for say 15-18 yrs.

  19. Comment posted by fire willie on November 30, 2005 at 12:58 pm (#18597)

Lastings was just deemed untouchable, along w Heilman, so Bos would have to want others instead… Victor Z, Nady, and Kmat…
Ray nice post, Mill is awesome to watch play.
