Five Over?
by: Damien Heath on Aug 24, 2005 12:46 AM | Filed under: Blog

Until tonight the Mets were 0-10 since early 2002 in games when their record was four games above .500 - tonight’s win puts them five over for the first time since they led the division on May 18th, 2002.

In that game, Shawn Estes went seven innings, Roberto Alomar homered (!!) and Armando Benitez got a 1-2-3 save.

u kno what was maybe even more impressing than jacobs tonight?

heath bell…struck out 2 hitters with his new splitter…made green look foolish at the plate

I’ll say it over here, too, ap — Bell for closer. Get BLooper away from my 9th inning!

Last nights game was great. I got to see the mets win big here in az and I got a free 44oz. thurstbuster from circle K because the mets struck out more than 12 times. I know there is many reasons Ice didnt get a hit tonight but if you saw his practice swings in the on deck circle, he would be dfa right that second. he swings the bat like 6 year old.

Seeing those names just make me cringe. I like this team just a little bit better than that one.

last nite was a good win. this has been a great start to a very important road trip. we all know how poorly this team has played on the road, so a good start was important for the heads of the players and metsgeeks. with seo pitching tonite and pedro going tomorrow i like our chances to, shhhh **in a hushed voice** sweep.

beltran has not driven in a run since august 7th. for the month he has 1 hr and 4 rbi. he’s our number 3 hitter. he should have more rbi than that. the problem is that he is 3-15 w/risp in august. 15 ab’s for the entire month with runners in scoring position!?! he is just not getting any oppurtunities. fix that, please, willie.

    Put that on Cairo.

Of course, it’s not like Beltran has been effective in those situations.

    Let’s just go for this:

    Reyes
    Beltran
    Wright
    Floyd
    Diaz
    Jacobs
    Castro
Cairo/Woodward (try Woodward until the September callups, I think he is better than Cairo)

I am a little nervous putting Diaz fifth, but there is no other way to move Beltran up, and nobody else projects as a #2 guy.

I don’t understand why you cats bash Will as much as you do. What manager goes through the season without making some mistakes, whether it be a lineup decision or an in-game decision. Will is a first year manager and he has done a pretty solid job. Did you expect him to come in and be Bobby Cox? He’s handled the ups and downs the team has gone through very well and we are a week away from September and in the thick of the race. Shea hasn’t seen this much excitement in a few years.

On another note, ultimately it would be nice to see C-los batting second and D. Wright batting third but without any protection for Cliff in the fifth spot that just can’t happen right now. But next season, with the addition of another big bat, that would definitely be a solid lineup to have.

Lastly, for those wanting to see Lastings called up to the big team…where do you suggest we put him?

Leave Willie alone. He has the ear of the clubhouse, and can push the right buttons with the players. Who gives a crap if he can push the right buttons with the media. If it was me, I wouldn’t even talk to the media, everything has a double or triple meaning, and there is always something behind a question. He keeps it in-house, and that’s what the players like. He doesn’t softball them either, look at Floyd, he’s got him laying out, and playing every day. Show me one Mgr in the last 5 yrs that did that. He should get Mgr of the year just for that.

I guess tonight will be the real test of Super Seo or So-Seo. I hope he’s the real deal. If he lays an egg, he’s done for the year. He really hasn’t faced any adversity since coming back up, we need to see how he handles getting hit around a little bit. Until I see that, I’ll be skeptical every time he goes out there.

Who is bashing Willie in this blog? I merely suggested a lineup change to get Cairo’s dead weight out of the 2-spot. I agree that Willie has a good hold of the clubhouse. There are certainly other blogs where the “Get off Willie’s back” entries would be more relevant.

  12. Comment posted by he’s so amazin’ on August 24, 2005 at 11:21 am (#10081)

my bad Danny. That wasn’t aimed at you. You’re right that would’ve been more appropriate in another blog. I just decided to put all my comments down here at one time. And actually I do like your lineup…just not sure if Vic is ready for that 5 spot yet. Need to see a little more plate discipline from him.

  13. Comment posted by Danny on August 24, 2005 at 11:37 am (#10082)

No problem at all amazin’. I am not sure that Vic is ready for the 5-spot either. The problem that Willie faces with constructing the lineup is that really only 2 guys fit the profile of a 2-hitter, and that is Beltran and Matsui. I think of Cairo as a utility guy. Beltran shouldn’t be moved until protection for Floyd is certified (is that Diaz? probably too early to put him there). And Matsui has, to put it lightly, underperformed this year. So I can’t really complain about the lineup Willie is putting out there, as long as Offerman or Woodward are not penciled in at first. Overall, I like Willie. Nobody, not even his biggest detractors, can say that the guys do not play hard for him.

  14. Comment posted by Sam Burns on August 24, 2005 at 11:39 am (#10083)

Beltron is a problem. He is not hitting, period. What should the Mets do with him? Its almost Sept 1 and he hasn’t shown anything. Last night was an eye opener, because everyone else hit, but him. So you know he has a problem, that aint going away.
Hitting him second might be a the thing to try, but I am afraid we bought a lemon. I hope not. Maybe Beltron should hit seventh for a few days and get his head/bat straightened out.
On a positive note, The Mets had their best game of the year last night. And, If Castro keeps doing great like this, Piazza will have a hard time getting his job back.
Why we need so many bench players, I do not know. We need another arm, so why do we have so many Williams and Offermans?
By the time the Mets meet the Phillies next week, it will be the battle for the wild card lead. Now that’s Summer excitement. Lets go Mets!

Let’s not get too hung up on the Sept 1 date for call-ups. The Tides have clinched a playoff spot, so I doubt there will be too many guys pulled from their roster until their season is done.

I would put Jacobs in the five spot, Victor Diaz strikeouts just a little bit to much for my liking right now to put him that high. I think jacobs will more then likely make more contact then Diaz, and probably won’thave many 3 strikeout games.

I like Victor but Jacobs to me, even though he’s only played 2 full games is a better contact hitter.

Look at it this way, Steve Phillps said the Mets were one slugger away before preseason started right? And pretty much he’s been dead on in that aspect. With Cameron and our pitiful firstbaseman production before the Diaz and Jacobs call up we now have added 2 sluggers and didn’t have to trade any body to get them.

If I was Minaya, I would make one more call up before Im done, and that is Hernandez to come and play second base. He has to hit better then Cairo and Kaz combined. Kaz can’t hit but has a lot better range then Cairo it seems to me. In the last 2 weeks, I’ve seen 3 balls get under the glove of Cairo’s that most younger guys could of gotten with a little quickness. Im also tired of Cairo popping up or hitting the ball right to fielders, not advancing runners when he’s abat.

Next year I can very much envision a lineup like this by midseason.

    1st. Harper/Jacobs.
    2nd. Keppinger/Hernandez
    3rd. Wright
    SS. Reyes
    C Castro/Jacobs
    Rf Cameron/Diaz/Redman
    Cf Beltran/Cameron
    LF Floyd/ P. Redman

    starting pitchers.

    Martinez
    Benson
    Seo
    Burnett
Trax/Zambrano/Heilman losers go to the bullpen

    relief
    Bell
    Heilman
    Ring
    Looper
    R. Hernanez

Thats quite a lineup of sluggers. Beltran, Wright, Floyd, Diaz or Cameron, Jacobs and Harper with that lineup on the field the Mets would lead the league in Hrs, and still steal a lot of bases with Wright, Reyes, Cameron, and Beltan leading the way.

I think Wright, Diaz, Jacobs and Harper will all be guys that will hit over 35 hrs in a season if they stay healhty for a year. I would be happy if Beltran just hit .285 and say 28 hrs a year, thats not to much to ask.

Let me know what you bloggers think of that lineup.

    griff

I don’t think the Mets will go with a lineup full of rookies next year, and I don’t think they should. Personally, I would like the Mets to add another hitter in the mix. Someone who we can count on if (when?) Floyd gets injured. Ditto for the bullpen. The Mets need a better closer (BJ Ryan) than Looper and maybe another reliever in case Hernandez (he’s going to be what, 41 next year?) struggles.

  20. Comment posted by Jordan on August 24, 2005 at 3:25 pm (#10117)

Robert, Harper has done well this year but I dont see the Mets bringing him for next year. Jacobs is not really a catcher, for emergencies he is fine, otherwise keep him at first

  21. Comment posted by Matt in Charlotte on August 24, 2005 at 4:59 pm (#10126)

Looper should not be our closer next season. He hasn’t been awful by any means, but he only strikes out one batter for every two innings he pitches. With both Ryan and Wagner hitting free agency, and Looper’s contract up, we have to make that move. Think about it, if Ryan or Wagner are on the Mets this season, doesn’t that alone make up the 2 games we are back in the WC, if not more?!!

  22. Comment posted by DoubleAAs on August 24, 2005 at 7:31 pm (#10136)

I agree 100%. Looper isn’t a real deal closer. The guy continues to put men on base game after game after game. A closer is supposed to be the guy that for 1 inning can just overwhelm hitters. Yes, he throws hard but he doesn’t throw strikes which leads to “hitters counts” and walks. He doesn’t have that killer instinct that so many other closers have where they just rip strike after strike for 1-2-3 innnings. Looper is not a closer in my opinion. Ryan or Wagner would be a tremendous upgrade and do wonders for this team.

  23. Comment posted by Sam Burns on August 24, 2005 at 8:42 pm (#10145)

Something we should all not forget. If not for Piazza going down, we never would have seen Jacobs, and Castro wouldnt be given a chance to show how good he keeps the team in the win column, day after day. Face the facts, he is a contact hitter, and doesn’t hit into 2 double plays a game like the ‘main’ catcher. And he has been doing great batting 8th.
When Piazza and Minky come back, if the Mets are hot, WIllie will have the toughest decisions of the year to make.

  24. Comment posted by Sam Burns on August 24, 2005 at 8:48 pm (#10147)

bj ryan. lets get him. i’ll look forward to the day when the mets stop blowing leads. its probably the worst thing to have to endure as a fan, a blow lead because the bullpen is incompetent. a good reliever is underrated. i a lights out (rivera, smoltz before he became a starter again, gagne) reliever is worth just as much as a #3 starter to me, maybe even more. if were willing to pay benson around 7 million, maybe we can pay a guy like ryan 8 million and seal the deal and get him to come here.
